Back when I was doing my internship in California, my supervisor who was a white, 40 year old 🇺🇸 American woman was married to this 40+ year old 🇮🇳 Indian man who was born a Dalit, his family emigrated to the 🇺🇸 US as a teenager and became relatively well off/upper middle class after moving to the States. She told us a story of how years ago, when they (back when they were around 30 years old) traveled to India to visit his hometown and family, a lot of those upper caste people were shocked and a bit frustrated seeing a Dalit being well off and married to a white/American woman. They married each other out of love but the other non-Dalits couldn't understand how a Dalit could end up rich (at least by Indian standards) and married to a white woman, with many of those higher caste people going up to her and demanding to know why she was married to a Dalit or asking if she knew that her husband was a Dalit (which she reply that she does know that but that it's not something that mattered to her).

Some critics are going to say that Ugandas economy collapsed after the explusion. So? It's better to be poor than to live under the Hindu caste system. Casteism varies from region to region, in some Indian states casteism is low, and in some casteism is high, much alike how race is prevalent in southern US more than it is the Northern states. Generally there's a group of people in India constituting to 20% of the population, who barely survive, their children go to school for a meal, and drop out from school before 14, not because of money, but for need of work, destroying the talent prior fruition. If you look closely you'll find casteism is associated with poverty, and historically most of the untouchables were exempt from the society, implying that these people were once in power and then subjugated and reduced to such state by the ones who came after and became kings. Example of this is the Nandas who had an empire but were vanquished by the Mauryas and every source you find calls them 'low born'. How can an emperor be low born?

I believe what you are saying is right. The degree of caste system practice, like racism in the US, depends on the location. Some areas are better at dealing with it than other areas. I also think it takes time for a civilization to reduce it's discrimination practice since it has been enshrined for a long time. But don't give up, keep going. The fight against racism in the US - where I live - is a long history, but generally it has made progress in society. One of the formulas proposed for reducing the damage from the caste system, has been the increasing adoption of various foreign religions that have a much better track record for solidarity. Unfortunately by far the largest of these has been the religion introduced by the Mogul empires, which has serious disadvantages in terms of violence and broader societal divisiveness. Under resurgent Hindu Nationalist ideology, unfortunately all the foreign religions along with many other groups trying to improve life, are tarred with the same brush and similarly harassed.

@@ic9771 The US experienced its meteoric rise because, up until the passage of the Civil Rights Act, it was the beneficiary of fortunate circumstances. It was one of the only industrialized nations that was left unscathed as a result of WWII, allowing it to dominate the global stage without any serious rivals, as most of those rivals were decimated after the war, or were just breaking free from the shackles of colonialism.. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 paved the way for mass immigration. Much of the economic prosperity that was experienced after that was the result of immigration that could only have happened as a result of the more inclusive spirit brought on by the Civil Rights Act. If you doubt that, look at the ethnic make up of Silicon Valley, consisting of a population of Indian, Pakistani, Chinese, and Korean people, where they are over represented relative to their numbers in the population. When discussing discrimintion you shouldn't forget cultural and social inheritance. Even if there's no formal discrimination, a higher social status might be related to having parents with academic background or political/professional connections. It's hard to accumulate all the knowledge you need in time to make the right choices and in most cases, it really helps with a couple of shoulders to stand on. This is true even in the west (political dynasties but also the enduring poverty of certain minorites). And you can't really outlaw this, everyone should have the right to help their children put their best foot forward in life. But this also means people from disadvantaged groups may need multiple generations in order to generate the same cultural/social inheritance as more established groups.

The current President and the previous President were from tribal and untouchables castes respectively. Nearly half of all engineering, medicine, civil service and graduate enrollment is reserved for disadvantaged castes. Many untouchables have moved up the class hierarchy. While there are lots of Upper castes who are struggling to move up the financial hierarchy and are stagnating due to the scale of the caste based quota system. Look into the raise of conversions to Christianity. A good majority of people are from so-called lower castes, evading the oppression from the system. In other countries such as USA economic prosperity/wartime building drove people from various backgrounds to work together. For example, the Second World War introduced a lot of women into the workforce. The same can be noticed in India too... In cities, you can see the reduced impact of the system, where what you can sell matters more than anything. As you go more toward rural areas, the presence of the system can be felt. We have an oversupply of labor and it doesn't necessitate any reorientation of the system. The caste system was documented to have existed long before the British colonization. However, they managed to keep the disparities to fit their model of making the country a market for their factory-made goods. To be fair, this started as a system to transfer knowledge/craftmanship from one generation to another. The economic value of each service exacerbated the difference giving more leverage to certain people for a long time. 21st-century political activism has been both good and bad for the system. It gave voice to the people oppressed, while also keeping the system reinvigorating itself. The political weight of a collective bunch of people is higher than an individual and that is being achieved through caste. Overall, this video had to be short & simplified, and also limited by what they understood. Each point of view differs.

This is also one of the many factor which cause majority of people in Indonesia and Malaysia turn from Hinduism to Islam, Christianity, or Buddhism. The video at around 04:40 makes the totally senseless statement that the caste system divides people based on the PAST LIVES of people. Was that a misprint? For God's sake! What kind of nonsense is that!!!! And one other thing: the *Bhagavad Gita Chapter 18, verses 41-45* clarify VARNA, or color. It refers to the COLORS OF PERSONALITY of each person. And NOT according to their birth. For instance, regarding people who class as Brahmin Varna, their characteristics include: "Tranquility, restraint, austerity, purity, patience, integrity, knowledge, wisdom, and belief in a hereafter-these are the intrinsic qualities of work for Brahmins." So if you're an atheist, don't claim to be a Brahmin! :) To repeat, the Gita emphasizes that this NOT based on birth/genetics. The word "Caste" was brought there by the Portuguese based on their usage of "Casta" or the classes of people such as nobility, peasants etc. The British used it to divide up the population of India. Since independence, the Indian government has used the word in an awfully oppressive way, and created a vicious QUOTA system based on "Caste." The highest "caste," the Brahmins, were given zero preference in government jobs or higher education. The government of Tamil Nadu, ever since independence, has been the most oppressive and hateful against Brahmins. One of the former leaders of the DMK party openly called for the genocide (yes, the killing) of all Brahmins. So there it is. Until this quota system is eliminated, India will never move ahead. The quota system is brutally discriminatory. But that said, there absolutely MUST be ways to promote the highest quality education to the downtrodden right up to high school graduation. And perhaps support for undergraduate college based on merit. After that, every citizen should be considered equal.
@jameshowlett3758 Жыл бұрын
Superficial research. Extremely disappointed this time. And you got one aspect of Reservation system completely wrong. Many seats (almost 50% in a few places) in Educational institutes and government jobs are "reserved" for" lower castes" , which means they can only be occupied by a person of lower caste. However the "Unreserved " seats are not for" upper castes", they are open for competition and are filled on the basis of merit. So, both higher, and lower caste people compete for them. Result: While i cannot get a college i desire at 610/720 marks in entrance exams, another student got in at 348/720.

Caste system was not hereditary. For most of its existence, it was based purely on competence, measured by excellence in academics. Also, people could move up or down in their caste based on their performance. It was only around 5th or 6th centuary, that someone whose name I don't remember, published a book called Manusmiti. This book called upon society to establish caste system based on birth, and also declared that people cannot move between castes. That book bought the evil what is known today as the rigid caste system. Fun fact : India's constitution was written by Dr B R Ambedkar, a visionary, who is held high in every Indian's minds, was from a low caste and used to organize 'manusmiti dahans ' , which means burning manusmiti, to condemn it. His interview with bbc, taken in 1955 is a very interesting peace to here, available on KZbin. I highly encourage you to read more about him, you would realise how far ahead of his time he was, far ahead than Europe too. Also, not just India, America and Europe too have a race and skin color based discrimination problem.

This is also the reason caste system exists i.e. the beneficiaries are rich lower castes. For eg the video reference IIT graduates, the cutoff for general class is 99%ile, same for lower caste is 50-70%ile. Is that not unfair and discriminatory? The analysis completely sidesteps a MAJOR aspect of the caste system, religion. The caste system is intrinsically linked to Hinduism and has been from the very start. And India is a highly religious country, the customs and traditions are all deeply intertwined with social stratification. It's really religion that upholds the caste system, and you may be able to manage its legal status but its social status will never fade until there is religious reform, which will never come because of the deep rooted religiosity of most Indians, further worsened by a ruling government whose entire political legacy is that of advancing a Hindu-populist agenda.

Most of social debates and policies are aimed at brewing a discussion on hindu religious reforms, and it has mostly been taken up in a pretty healthy way in Hindu society. In fact, we are yet to see a religious reform in say Muslim religious narrative especially in India, any discussion on Muslim scriptures is not at all welcomed by Muslim clerics, any debates on Muslim caste system is again not welcomed by Muslim clerics and upper class families. Also, hindu-populist agenda which you are referring to is against the caste hierarchy and in fact this very hindu-populist ideology of current govt. brought a non jat cheif minister in Haryana, non-maratha cheif minister in Maharashtra.
