What David said about his prayer with God reminded me a lot about math class. Our teacher teaches us how to do a math problem but at a certain point, you have to do the math problem correctly on your own. Only after you’ve taken the test, and your teacher has graded it, will you know whether or not you did the math problems correctly. We have to be able to do things on our own to prove that we’ve learned the lesson.

I can think of lots of times when I felt the spirit strong. Some of those times included when I was in the Missionary Training Center, and we would have the devotionals, and some General Authorities would come and speak to us. Another time that was similar, I remember as a Boy Scout we had a large Mormon scout encampment in Florida, and I was excited because the Prophet was supposed to be coming there. It turned out that he couldn't come because of health reasons, and I thought I would never see one in person because I lived across the country from Utah. Several General authorities came in his stead, and as it turned out several of them became future Presidents of the church. So, Instead of missing out on seeing the Prophet, I got to see several future ones before their callings and felt the spirit strong in their presence. I always felt the spirit strong in Seminary classes because we had an awesome spiritual teacher. I've felt it strong while teaching investigators on my mission, and finally I've felt it strong while reading the Book of Mormon. Like David and Mimi said though, it isn't always so strong every time, but it is there when you need it most I think.

I love to hear more about this topic, however, as someone who grew up in the church, I think one of the first things you guys should have clarified before answering the question, is that the spirit works differently if you aren’t baptized. When you start the video acknowledging non-members, that’s when you should have brought it up. Again, loved the video, love you guys, you’re doing great 👍

Fair statement. Didn't even occur to us.
@KevlarX26 жыл бұрын
You are a little off on that point. The spirit is not different to non-members. The only difference is unless you are baptized and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost, He will not abide with you as long. You will not always have the companionship of the Holy Ghost in other words.

Great discussion. As far as the good feelings go, I have already referred to what President Hinkley has said in Preach My Gospel when he says, if something is good then it’s from God. That helps to lessen the worry of if feelings are the spirit. We can just count on all good things being the spirit.

So the Holy Spirit comes and goes? My understanding of the Holy Spirit is that he never leaves us. There is nothing we can do to push him away once we have him indwelt in us. We are the new temple of God and where the spirit resides. Wherever we go, he goes. Wherever we are at, he meets us there. Never will he flee from evil, but he is the flame that burns brighter in the face of evil. The Holy Spirit is the presence of God in the darkest storms and the fiercest of spiritual battles. He is our strength when we are too weak to stand for righteousness. While he never leaves us, nor can we push him away, we are able to lower our sails and stop participating with him. Put our blinders on and go our own way. But even then, he is with us, he is there with us even in our driest spiritual deserts. We just need to call on him. He never leaves, he never stops loving. I pray that you too can experience the whole, real and glorious presence of the Holy Spirit.

I felt a feeling when I went to a Mormon church, but I didn’t join. Feelings are subjective, and they could be tricks from demons. I’ve felt feelings in all kinds of different churches and religions. the fact I felt a feeling in a Mormon church doesn’t at all allow me to know whether or not it’s true.

But what is your advice on someone not being spiritually wise? Do they not comprehend the Gospel well? Etc... or am I just dumb? How can one perfect that for the better? :(
@davidsnell26056 жыл бұрын
I mentioned at the end of the video that the language of the Spirit is one that takes a lifetime to learn. If you struggle with understanding it, you're not alone. I don't by any means consider myself to be fluent in understanding the Spirit, though I wish I was! My advice would be this: If you are trying your best to keep the commandments and to love others, you're already following the Spirit much more often than you may realize. And if you're trying to get better at understanding the Spirit, well I'm no expert, but I'd say this: Keep doing the little things. The genius of the gospel is how the little things make great things come to pass. A handful of Christ's original apostles were simple fishermen, but they did amazing things. Joseph Smith was a farm boy that restored the Church. The Jaredite barges' light sources were simple stones. Along that same line of thought, simple things like daily prayer, reading the scripture, and going to church consistently will do great things for your life and quest to understand the Spirit.

I'm assuming you meant Nephi from the Book of Mormon. Nephi struggled with obeying the Lord, for he believed in the commandment: Thou shalt not kill. However, the Lord had delivered Laban into his hands and explained why in 1 Nephi 4.:13. The Lord (sometimes) slayeth the wicked in order to bring forth his righteous purposes. There have been many instances that the Lord had the wicked to be slayed. Noah and the great flood. Moses and the Egyptian soldiers in the Red sea, Sodom and Gomorrah, Armageddon in the future. The important thing is to find out if the Lord had directed these righteous men to accomplish that. Receiving a witness from the spirit, of the truthfulness of the scriptures is the only way to know. There are also many instances where the Lord permitted the wicked to accomplish their evil deeds against the righteous. In this he promises that vengeance is his and in his own due time he will repay in the great judgement. What we can't do is take man's understanding and apply it to God. Isaiah 55: 8-9.....{8}For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. {9} For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts...........I would say, sometimes it is hard to understand, but we should always trust the Lord knows better than us about higher purposes.

If you get a feeling that tells you to murder someone, there's a good chance that those feelings aren't from God... There was no need for Nephi to kill Laban. He was already passed out drunk. If God had really wanted him dead, Jerusalem was about to be destroyed/invaded by the Babylonians anyway...
@burninator19836 жыл бұрын
There is an abundance of Bronze Age barbarism in the Old Testament along with myth and legend. While it is possible that Moses was a real person, the general consensus of historians/scholars who research that time period would say that he was fictional, perhaps based on the Pharaoh Akhenaten. It helps to remember that much of the Bible comes from oral tradition that was eventually written down at some point after being exaggerated and glorified over time. Even if the genocide of the Canaanites and so on by the hands of the Israelites did actually happen, slaughtering an entire city of foreign enemies is not the same as murdering a single person face-to-face from your own town. Would a just and loving god really ask a righteous man like Nephi apparently was to do that knowing the kind of torment that would result from such an act?
@robpaulson79926 жыл бұрын
When the spirit told the mormons to slaughter an entire wagon train of settlers from Missouri they obeyed. Then the spirit told them to cover it up and kidnap their children, and they obeyed. So this is not just a hypothetical question. This is why the Mormon church can never again be permitted to become a theocracy in Utah or anywhere else. It's members can't think independently of their leaders and they will literally do or believe anything as long as the "spirit" confirms that it is true.

www.lds.org/media-library/video/2013-10-2060-recognize-when-spirit-leaves?lang=eng Elder Bednar brings up a good point when at the end of this video he says that usually it is US that withdraws from the Spirit, not the other way around. So I guess you could say that in Mexico, in that scenario, it was I who went somewhere the Spirit wouldn't go. Worked as a great warning signal.

@Carcharodon Carcharias I agree, I have had this experience as well when you distinctly feel something is wrong. The Spirit can warn us of danger by leaving our presence. This is how the Spirit helps us. I consider it a very special thing.

By the Spirit, are you referring to the Holy Spirit? By the death cult, are you referring to the people who pray to Santa Muerte? I've read about it but never actually met anyone who believes in it. It's got its roots in Catholicism but is in no way approved or sanctioned. Creepy. I may be misunderstanding you, but are you saying that the Spirit abandoned you when you were in a complex situation? I don't think that the Holy Spirit abandons people just because they are in physical approximation to a bad guy. It seems to me like that's when you would be most in need.
@belindapaine39125 жыл бұрын
The Holy Spirit doesn't necessarily abandon you in a sense that He doesn't return, but you can discourage the Holy Spirt from being with you or being in that space. This might be an odd analogy but here it goes. Imagine visiting a close friend who smokes a lot inside their house, and the house has a really strong burnt cigarette smell. If you're not used to smoking you won't want to be in their house, but just because you don't want to be in their house doesn't mean you don't want to spend quality time with that friend. In the same way the Holy Spirit doesn't want to be in spaces where He doesn't feel welcome so He won't be in those spaces but He still wants to be with the person who doesn't want Him there. Luckily the Holy Spirit is not very far away from us and if we ask our Heavenly Father with real intent and purpose concerning having the influence of the Holy Spirit in our lives then we will have that influence. Another really cool thing I learnt recently is what's called the Light of Christ. All children are born with the Light of Christ in them, and it's this influence from God that teaches us the biggest and immediate differences between right and wrong and these differences become more finely turned as we grow older if we invite the company of the Holy Spirit and seek guidance from God. If we don't invite the company of the Holy Spirit and seek council from God it becomes easier for us to become desensitised to those differences and we easily make the wrong choices. The Light of Christ is basically our conscience. When you get baptised under the full authority of the priesthood the Light of Christ is replaced by the Holy Spirit which greatly enhances your revelation and inspiration from Heaven. The Light of Christ is not the same as the Holy Spirit. With all that said... well more typed out I guess in this instance... with the Light of Christ you do receive promptings from the Holy Spirit and those are always special and direct you to do good but the Holy Spirit doesn't constantly abide with you as if you were baptised under the full authority. I'm an investigator in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and I hope to be baptised by this time next year. I wish you all the best as you learn more about the Gospel of Jesus Christ and I hope this message helps you in some way.

For me, the Spirit leaving sends about the strongest message that I need to get out of there too. It's like, "Hey this is dangerous. You can follow me out of here or you can stay, but I'm leaving." Like if you and a trusted friend went to a party you didn't know was bad, your friend realizes it before you and says that you both ought to leave. If you really trust your friend, him heading out the door in that situation should be a serious sign you ought to listen to and follow him.

I just thought of a good Crisp, Clear, and Essential! So I was walking down the sidewalk on this busy street, and this guy in a truck drove up into one of the side streets, and asked if I wanted ride. ... the guy was ...pretty handsome. However, I got this distinct "DO NOT GET ANY CLOSER TO THAT VEHICLE. GET AWAY." ....It was ...creepy, in the sense that...I have no clue what would have happened. Just curious why you believe in the Book of Mormon and that the LDS church is the "Restored" church? Is it because you like how the whole "Church" sounds to you (For my son's mother it was large family and the importance of filmily that drew her to the LDS church. Also the idea of having more kids in heaven) It pisses me off knowing that when she gets there she will be so let down because she will find out that all of this time she was just looking forward to something that was made up on earth by men who wanted to make a fast buck . . .
