I actually think they managed scalation quite well. Endgame was released almost two years ago, and then we got Far From Home, Wandavision and Falcon and the Winter Soldier scaling it all back down while dealing with the aftermath of what happened in that movie (thats the reason I don't mention Black Widow though it also helped with relaxing a bit after that huge event). I understand Wandavision was supposed to come out after Falcon originally and it makes sense, considering the amount of stuff that happens I believe Falcon leading to Wandavision leading to Loki makes a lot of sense, but it worked either way. And then Loki just played with us for a while leading towards the next absolutely huge event in the MCU. So yeah, I think they managed it well. I seriously hope they don't rush this multiversal war thing
@geminielemental88003 жыл бұрын
Marvel managed the Disney+ side of continuing the story well. Where they failed is the theatrical side (even before Covid). Black Widow was going to have to happened sometime before Endgame for obvious reasons. Shang Chi and The Eternals are both completely new with no tie in any part of Phase 3. Even a throw away line by Hawkeye in Endgame of "I was just taking over where Shang Chi left off" when we see him in Japan creates SOME sort of link. The Eternals origin story (which I think this is) should have been after three of them were introduced and teased (Black Widow, Shang Chi, and finally Dr Strange). The Eternals Origin movie then becomes the what is the next great big bad in the MCU.

She fears that if this condition continues on unchecked, existence as it is now known may be in peril". Thanos then starts to lay the groundwork for his plan to collect the stones. Death notices he hasn't started killing people and she's like "What the hell are you doing? Why aren't you killing people like I asked?" And Thanos explains that it would take him centuries to complete her task at his current power level and he simply wishes to expedite the process by getting the stones. So Thanos is like "so...we cool?" and Death is like "Yeah ok, I guess that's fine". I left a lot out but that's the gist of it.

MCU will be fresh again when they correctly portray the best Marvel villain and antihero DOCTOR DOOM!
@zl37913 жыл бұрын
Are you so sure they will correctly potray him, I mean the MCU has a track record of treating villains injustly. Moreover, the MCU was good because it had competent writers (namely the Russo Brothers) and it also had to work for its success. Now that it has its success and the Russo Brothers have gone, the MCU is left in the hands of inferior writers and complacency. Every single Marvel project this year has been a disappointment and subpar. It would be wise to lower your standards of expectations. The accessment is coming though, in the form of spiderman 3, if that ends up being good than there's hope for marvel still, if not, and if it ends up being another poorly written movie then the MCU has truly died.
@Antwannnn3 жыл бұрын
@@zl3791 *Please just read it* 😅 You need to realize that your opinion isn't the ONLY one out there. TONS of people think the MCU shows have been fantastic. Of course people have their different ideals on which ones are better out of the 3 we have so far, but the majority of people didn't find them to be a "disappointment and subpar." Also with that being said you just jumped over 5 MCU projects that will all premiere before Spider-Man No Way Home even gets its first teaser trailer lol But seriously have you been seeing the reviews for Shang-Chi? I see some saying (independent youtubers who have NOT been paid off by Disney lol) that this is the best Marvel origin movie ever made and that it's the best Marvel film since Logan and that it's in their TOP 5 superhero movies of all time. Yes. Better than Infinity War, Spider-Verse, Ragnarok and so on. It's truly hard to believe, I know, but the positive reviews haven't been stopping, and when the embargo lifts monday I think it'll just ramp up even more (fingers crossed). And do you realize the director of The Eternals, Chloe Zhao, JUST won 2 Oscars for Nomadland for not only the film itself but her directing? And she was hired BEFORE she even won ANY awards. Marvel has an act for picking up very creatively gifted no-name directors and giving them opportunity before any of the mainstream takes hold of them a la Taika Waititi, James Gunn, The Russo's, and now Chloe Zhao and Destin Daniel Cretton. I think you are judging the future of this great universe *WAYYY* too narrow-mindedly my guy. You lack hope and vision. Also the Russo's didn't write Winter Soldier, Civil War, Infinity War or Endgame. That was Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus; who also wrote The First Avenger.

This is the first Nerdstalgic video that I flat out disagreed. I just finished rewatching the whole Infinity Saga last night and these issues he mentioned I feel like valid issues before Endgame but not after. The MCU almost always try to correct any mistakes they made in the past storywise. Even Red Skull had a role to play. With the deaths, the important ones are sure to never return except for maybe after 8-10 years for the nostalgia bait. I don't think they'll be major players again. The Ant-man films are generic popcorn flicks that are still enjoyable. I don't think it's hot garbage to the point where it's offensive, and it still has enough for the characters to be important universe-wide (without them the quantum tunnel would never be made). He said so himself that not every movie should be an Endgame-type event. If we're talking directorial vision though, Shang-Chi and Eternals looks promising. Of course they will probably still follow the formula but they always adapt through each phase. And creative freedom doesn't always work anyway. Patty Jenkins got full creative control for WW1984 and we all know how that turned out.

What will guarantee the decline of the MCU is treating the "comic book movie" as a genre. It's not a genre of film, it's setting, it's window dressing, a vehicle/delivery mechanism for the actual story. This is an area in which DC is actually doing better. Their films are very different from one another. Their issue is that they have no sense of coherent direction which makes everything seem haphazard and thrown together rather than creatively bold and interesting. Both Marvel Studios and WB need to learn from each other. WB needs to figure out what works about their characters and universe, fogure out a coherent longterm plan, and commit to it. Marvel Studios, on the other hand, needs to stop homogenizing their films, break from formula a bit and realize that they can use their universe as a vehicle to tell different kinds of stories in different genres. *Both need to get a clue about what their actual paying customers actually want to pay to see amd stop gauging customer demand based on the disproportionately loud minority on Twitter just like every other entertainment company these days.) Do a horror film, a detective noir story, a deep character study, a psychological thriller, a crime drama, a romance, a hard scifi adventure, and so on. Joss Whedon's success with The Avengers is well-deserved, but his overall total influence on the MCU is one of the worst things that could've happened to it which will impact and harm its longevity. I'm all for having fun and a having a good laugh, but Joss Whedon and every other movie that tries to be The Avengers either deliberately or unintentionally uses glibness that often comes at the expense of emotional stakes and dramatic tension. As a result, although I very much enjoy the vast majority of the MCU, many of these individual films will not stand the test of time and will be considered nothing more than empty calory filler. It's telling that what are arguably the movies that did the best job at using humor and lightheartedness without undermining the drama and emotional weight are also the movies that currently are kr almost certainly will be the most memorable and most beloved (the movies from the Russo Bros and James Gunn are prime examples of this). "Franchise fatigue" doesn't exist. What people confuse for framchise fatigue is fatigue over a franchise's failure to keep things interesting, a failure to maintain high quality, and a failure to stay creatively vibrant and avoid laziness/comfortability. If there's fatigue of anything, it's mediocre product fatigue. Franchises succeed or fail on the same basis as one-off films and original properties. They succeed if what is being presented looks compelling and entertaining, and they fail if they do not.

Marvel studios doesn’t really treat the superhero film like a genre. Sure, the films may have a similar sense of humor,and they didn’t take many risks and they’ve backtracked on deaths too many times, but the mcu films certainly aren’t interchangeable. Avengers really was a superhero film, but Winter Soldier is a spy thriller, the Guardians films are space operas with laughs, Ant Man is a heist film, Homecoming is a teen comedy and Ragnarok is an improv comedy. These films have similar elements, but the belief that they all do nothing different is pretty unfair and almost stereotypical.

It's better that WB doesn't create MCU 2.0. it's unnecessary and would resemble already popular franchise. Let DC be the one doing solo movies. James Bond and Batman are older than half a century and keep on getting adapted and remade. People would never really get tired of it & WB can always push other characters. MCU style franchise also has disadvantages. Your each character's storytelling capacity gets fixed & has to be tailored to fit into the franchise. killing any chances of individual development, however great for characters who would have never been able to work on their own like Falcon for example. Biggest problem is you can't really reboot entire marvel universe as a franchise again. But another Batman trilogy with different villains and settings can still be sold to moviegoers. That's because character driven films endure longer than ensembles. Spiderman is another great example. Same reason you can't really reboot LOTR but you can make Conan the barbarian multiple times.

The movies are starting to feel a bit "cookie-cutter" imo and I would LOVE if they would hire writers/directors from different genres and give them full creative control to make any type of film they want. Imagine if different movies were written as a horror, or a comedy, or a pysch-thriller, etc. They have done a good job with some properties like WandaVision was a decent mystery, the Winter Soldier was a good "rogue-soldier espionage" action, and Deadpool obviously an action comedy (ik ik Deadpool isn't part of the mcu yet, but you get my point). Obviously family-friendly action-comedy does make sense from a business standpoint since it is a superhero world, but I really feel like the longevity of this universe is going to depend on whether or not Marvel is willing to expand their creative horizons. The reason the Dark Knight trilogy was so good was because WB allowed Christopher Nolan the creative control to make his own movie. Marvel should take note.

One advantage the MCU has is that actos age and contracts end... This Phase 4 torch-passing approach is just brilliant. There's a side to this moves that has rarely bee explored in comic books: Heroes get old, new heroes arrives to the scene, the torch is passed. I loved "Falcon and the Winter Soldier" for how this transition was handled, much like in "Black Widow" and, I hope, in "Hawkeye". If the MCU is well-handled, we should see in the future an older Spider-Man leading the Avengers guided by Bucky Barnes as Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Honestly, I prefer what DC is doing with their recent movies, which are standalone things, not part of a universe. This allows for films with a greater variety of tones, as well as more artistic freedom for the filmmakers. A goofy family comedy like Shazam can exist alongside a grim drama like Joker or a fantasy epic like Zack Snyder's Justice League. This feel of different creative voices and styles is what rejuvenated the DCEU, as their attempts to escalate via world ending crossovers fell tragically short, so instead of an escalation, it's more like a tree branching out in different directions

They kinda already failed with "rushing content too quickly" in the vein of what's next after Thanos. Loki (the show) made it so literally everything in the MCU, including the Loki show itself up to the end of episode 6, was fabricated by some selfish god. No decision we see the heroes and villains take is truly their own. All victories, all pitfalls, all deaths and resurrections. They were all pre planned by Khan who didn't want alternate timeline versions of himself to be born. And now that this """"good"""" khan is dead, a more evil one took his place in the timeline (contradicting the time travel rules established in Endgame)(on top of not making sense because how do you alter the present by killing someone in the future) Evil Khan is blatantly the new big bad after thanos. Thanos threatened the universe while Khan threatens the multiverse. All these new shows and future movies exist to set up a new team of avengers after how broken up the original got. It's all so tiresome. Everything exists to set up the next thing. It's a franchise with no destination. Once an important conflict built throught several movies, another just comes in and laughs at the previous conflict with how insignificant it became. There's no point in caring about what happens now because the future is a wildcard with a steady decline in quality. Anyone can die and just as easily be ressurected, or be replaced with a copy from an alternate universe

Another guy who doesnt understand that stories with predetermined choices CAN work. Time travel rules were messy in MCU to begin with, but making choices predetermined doesnt ruin the character choices. They themselves still believe they made them on their own. Bringing predeterminism in is like bringing the writer in. I will agree that Loki executes predeterminism pretty bad, but to say that it ruins the choices is a pretty bad take.

This is so true it doesn't feel like they are making standalone films that focus on world building, it feels like they are just writing chapters for the next big event. Like imagine if we got Hawkeye solo movie showing what happened during the blip and how he transitioned to Ronin. Which would have made me care more about the Flagsmashers in FATWS A Nova movie showing the aftermath and the power vacuum left by the Nova Corps destruction. Bruh I'd even be fine with a Squirrel Girl movie. I just want something that creates all these separate smaller stories and narratives filled with heart, instead of chasing after the next big crossover event.

@@inendlesspain4724 I disagree cause I'm also a Shonen fan but unlike the Shonen I follow or followed (One Piece, MHA, Naruto, AOT, etc) I'm completely burnt out by the MCU because the Shonen series may seem like the arcs are just rinse and repeat at times there is an end goal to be the Hokage, Pirate King, Wizard King, number 1 hero, etc and once the end goal is reached that's it. The MCU has no end goal, Thanos felt like an end goal beating him was satisfying and a great wrap up to a 10 year epic. So to just come back and do the same thing again except replace the occasional hero with another and replace this world ending threat with another just doesn't do the same for me. 1. Play around with the tone 2. Play around with the genre(I mean really play around with the genre, not a half measure like Ant-Man which is supposed to be a heist flick) 3. Give the directors a certain level of creative freedom 4. Maybe put less emphasis on continuity personally.

Having a ton of content alone does not create fatigue. There is presently no need to watch the tv shows to get into the movies. They are bonus content. Furthermore, if one decides to gorge on all the content in a gluttonous way it is not the fault of the studio or producer of said content.

Wrong, it does create fatigue

No, they aren't bonus content. They are connected.

@@bashengatheblackmanta7003 Yep. Simple supply and demand. There is simply way too much supply in the comic book movie genre, and not enough viewers around to sustain it right now. Let the existing IP sink in a bit. Just 5 years, that's all!

This is where the Netflix shows, especially DD did so well, grounded urban stories and threats. I feel your point also applies to the DCU. I'm not overly fond of live-action Batman mostly because he kills, relies too much on gadgets and armor, or because he just can't fight but I did enjoy The Batman overall. However, since its release, the talk has all been about Bane or the Joker, whereas the far more interesting sequel would be the original venom storyline about Bruce's struggle to deal with his own human frailty in a world that has superhumans. Let's leave out the supervillians just for once and tell a grounded Batman story for a change.

I was wholeheartedly hoping they would scale back down to more personal stories and issues with the characters so far, and they have. Mostly. I don't think we need to rush into another overarching big bad like Thanos so soon...but I guess we're there now.

Not exactly, but I’m glad for the personal narratives too. It’s interesting so far since we have a lot of plenty of ways to go about this!

You say imagine a Marvell property that is serious and has weight to the story .. I say see daredevil that’s what it is. Taking a strong approach to all elements of modern story telling and making monumental achievements. Daredevil is a dare say one of the best shows ever done not just best Marvell shows and not just best superhero shows but best ever.

The thing that really gets so tiresome is that so many of these movies that should be solo titles require a supporting character. The spider man films come to mind. Spider Man is the character who for decades turned down joining the avengers due to his identity. However, he fought everyone. From stereotypical thugs, to his science mad baddies, to X-Men threats like the juggernaut, to damn aliens such as the symbiotes. Spider Man never needed support because of his skills, smarts and his spirit. Having him tied so closely to Iron Man I always felt was a detriment and undervalued just what makes that character so special. I agree not everything has to be bombastic 100%. But we can't turn that down and also not say someone should be a hero in their own right and not need avenger support all of the time.

good points, with Tony gone and his identity outed, maybe we will get some more development

agreed. i wish they kept uncle ben as his mentor instead of tony. it felt like all of spider-man's enemies were really just tonys and it didnt bring him any individuality.
@dothog14012 жыл бұрын
@@areebahh1293 this is an argument I've always had problems with. Even though Tony's doings made them evil, Spider-Man still fought them. Spider-Man villains are usually never turned evil by Spider-Mans actions. But, they still pose a threat to Spider-Man since he is fighting them. Not Tony.

As a Lego, specifically a Bionicle fan, they suffered a similar thing. The original Bionicle line lasted 10 years and was a multi media franchise, books, online movies, comics, etc. There comes a point where it becomes to much.

Very insightful. This has a lot of the critiques that I have had for various movies, but tied together in a clear a concise way. Hopefully the creators of the MCU don’t mess this up, they don’t really have an excuse since they have all the resources and talent in the world…

What goes up must come down. It's not a question of "if" but "when". Decline is an inevitable feature of everything that has ever existed in the universe.

Moon knight is a character that though makes some jokes rarely, is a brutal angry disturbed man, sipder-man is a fun loving poor kid that wants to help while make shitty jokes, they are the opposite but they have crossovers all the time, they work together. This is how the MCU should be, just cause they crossover doesn't mean they're the same

I think Marvel has done a good job de-escalating the MCU. WandaVision, Falcon & Winter Soldier, and Loki allowed these characters to have more personal stories rather than the occasional superhero affair (although some achieved that more than others). I’m excited to see Shang-Chi and what it has in store.
