my dad had a work trip to Lyon back in 2002-ish got brought back a Juninho Olympique Lyonnais shirt. I had no clue who he was- I was a fringe football fan (a kid from the Pacific Northwest) but after getting the jersey and trying to watch as many videos of him I could find on the internet..I became a fan and he made me join my highschool team. Should've been more prominent in the Brazilian NT but as deep lying playmaker supporting the two Ronaldos, Rivaldo, and Ricardo instead of his natural position of full-fledged attacking midfielder. His defensive work rate was often underappreciated and thus I think it would've easily worked. Could've added so much layers if he was featured more in such talented team. I remember playing Pro Evolution Soccer 2009 / 2010 back on my Wii. I used to check out some different clubs to play with and one time I got into playing as Lyon. When I looked at the stats for the players I saw Juninho's insane accuracy stats and sure as day I put him down for my standards. He netted 3 Free Kicks in that game alone and many more as I simply fell in love with his free kicks. Only later I found out that he literally was this insane in real life as well! Hey buddy, I grew up in England during Beckham's manchester united/ England captain days. He was my favourite player and he is truly one of the greatest ever free kick takers in history. As much as I dislike Brazil (because of the fans and not the players), Juninho Pernambucano can NEVER BE MATCHED ON FREE KICKS. Eternal GOAT of set-pieces. Unlike David Beckham, Lionel Messi and Michel Plattini, Juninho had NO RANGE LIMIT. I saw him score from 41 yards and a week later from 37. The following season, he scored two free kicks in the same game and both from exactly 34 yards. One in each half (he only attempted two direct free kicks in that game and scored both).

Back in the good ol'days. Nowadays this guy would be the main name in the brazilian national team but back then he was just a very good player among many in the team, when the seleção was THE SELEÇÃO. We miss exceptional guys like him.

Juninho‘s Freekicks were honestly like penalties for other players. Absolutely unreal freekick taker ! For me, he‘s the master of the knuckle ball. The way he embarassed Oliver Kahn and the way he scored against Pep‘s Barça who would end up becoming sextuple winners will always remain legendary.

I remember when I was 9 y/o my uncle showing me his freekicks and explaining me the technique. Few years later, in a match my team was loosing 2-0 with 15 minutes to go, we got a freekick 27-32m away from the goal, my teammate was telling me not to shoot. Welp I shot the ball using that technique, hitting it just under the crossbar to make it 2-1. Five minutes later we got another freekick few meters off the edge of the box. And again, dipped ball, just like his vs St-Ettienne, over the wall and in bottom corner. Can't thank enough my uncle for showing me Juninho, who is one of my favorite footballers, alongside Kaka and few others. Great video essay and commentary as always

People remember him because of his FK - Which is fair because he IS the GOAT on that category - but he was a all around genius. What he achieved with Lyon is unprecedented. You can't achieve that only on freekicks.

only reason why Juninho is so overlook around the world is because he played with the 3 R's (ronaldo, ronaldinho, rivaldo) and also played with Romario, Edmund, and other that were the Best of their time. People in europe forget about him, but brasilians know Juninho pretty well, it was a terror evertime he kicked. PS: would be amazing if you make a video about Rogerio Ceni, one of the best goalkeepers ever, made more than 100 goals, destroyed many world competition, AND played for the same team since the begining (são paulo)

I remember in 2005-2006 when this GOAT being calm and composed shreds the other team with long shots and free kicks. Should check stats of Freekick failures/total Freekicks taken. It would be record low compared to any player. Lowest Margin of Error. Not only that his pass accuracy that includes Long pass especially was incredible.

My 3 biggest regret as a Lyon fan. 1: The game against the PSV. Our team was stacked and we could’ve won the UCL. In Lyon we keep saying as a joke that there was a penalty on Nilmar 2: the game against ac Milan where we’re being eliminated thanks to the error of Abidal who covers the offside of Sheva and allows him to assist Inzaghi who scored the dagger 3: the treatment of the board and notably Aulas. Juni had allows us to sign Paqueta and Guimaraes. He also was the only one who advocates for the coach to play in the starting 11 Gusto and Lukeba. We’ve been able to compete for the title against Lille and PSG. Juni helps Lyon to be competitive and be able to win the title. He also helped to the a UCL semi final during the final 8 and he saved the poorly financial situation of the club thanks to the sale of Bruno G, Paqueta, Gusto and Lukeba. But he was brutally sacked and criticized in the press by the president Aulas. That’s something that left a profound scare in him and prevented him to come back to Lyon when the new owner Textor asked him
