Weird History

Күн бұрын

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints has a fascinating history. From its founding in the 1820s by Joseph Smith to the its modern-day prevalence in Utah, the religion continues to intrigue believers and skeptics alike. Aspects of Mormonism are shrouded in mystery to outsiders - but would you believe that there are rumored ties between the mob and the LDS church?
Before your imagination goes into overdrive, know that the Mormon church isn't rife with organized crime. True, there are bizarre tales of Mormons and Howard Hughes; the eccentric billionaire's business holdings were controlled by the so-called "Mormon Mafia." And then there's the religion's roots in Las Vegas...

as a vegas native it’s always so interesting to see the stereotypes about our city from the perception of tourists. it’s even more interesting to see their reaction when they see how involved mormons were/are in vegas. they’re usually aware of the mob’s history but the presence of mormons in vegas and the suburban areas near it is ridiculously high. i didn’t actually go to a school that wasn’t overwhelmingly predominantly white/mormon until i got to high school, and it was because it was a magnet school with kids from all over the valley and even some outside of the clark county school district. interesting dichotomy for sure, mormons funding sin city. fun video!

Mormons believe all non-mormons are subhumans to be exploited. It's the same believe that the Muslims and Jews have about other races and other religions. Mormons are mean, vicious cruel people who practice witchcraft and blood atonement. Blood atonement means they believe they need to kill non believers who live among them, or fellow mormons who committed grave sins. The federal gov won't let them murder people anymore, so they gang stalk the people they have religious based hatred against to drive them out of their communities. Mormons have the same "Mark of Cain" belief systems that the KKK had. The Masons have this same view. Is it any wonder the Mormons came from the Masons and are brothers to the KKK?

Merry Christmas! I was raised Mormon in Arizona. It is very true that all of the states that surround Utah (Nevada, Arizona, Colorado, etc) have large populations of mormons because when they got to Salt Lake Brigham Young sent some people to settle in the surrounding areas. I had heard about Mormons having something to do with the casinos in Vegas, but didn't know any specifics until this video. Thanks for sharing! Mormons dont talk about their history unless it makes them look flawlessly perfect, so they obviously don't talk about this hahaha

The church compromises its squeaky clean image playing a neutral stance. But its not neutral is it? The church makes tremendous investments. But do the membership, who's ten percent tithing provides the capital for those investments, ever see a report on how the "stock" is doing? Nope. We're told "dont' question the Lord's annointed." The church has build a beautifully, cynically crafted money generating machine. A successful investment firm that neither pays taxes or has to do something so inconvenient as to provide transparency or accountability. Its a capitalist firm wearing a religious mask.

@ron Gordon Never once in my life in the church heard or was offered a general expenditure/investment scheme or report of the church. Hi. Im a direct descendant of one of those first men called by Brigham Young to be missionaries to the Native Americans in Las Vegas. Our family has copies of his journals and first hand accounts. The main purpose was to convert Native Americans, second was the outposts. My descendant died in 1862 and its true that he recorded it being very difficult to survive there. Ended up settling back in Southern Utah. My personal opinion is that Mormons laid some groundwork so people could live there., but Mobsters build what it is today with a couple Mormons along the way happen to live there and were trying to make some money in real estate.

Hey Weird History, you guys should do a video on Amish drug dealers. They do exist. See what you guys can scrounge up!
@kyriljordanov2086
@kyriljordanov2086 3 жыл бұрын
Most of them are folks raised Amish who either left before joining the church as young adults or maybe left latter in life. A few are active Amish. I lived for a time in eastern Pennsylvania and most of those guys weren't actually Amish, but just raised in Amish communities. They have to formally join at adulthood and if they choose not to then they're not Amish. But yeah, they do exist. I've heard of an active Amish community in Mexico working with the cartels.

As a mormon who lives in Vegas, I am happy that you published this video. It’s a very *proud* story that many of the old people like to tell, about how the Mormon Mafia basically ruled Vegas financially for a time. It’s a thing that we’re meant to be proud of. Now if you ask , most of the financial control we had over las vegas is gone, but there are many and I mean MANY Mormon lawyers. So take that for what you will :)

Las Vegas means “the meadow” in Spanish... yeah... no meadows there now. Edit: Hughes eventually moved out of the Desert Inn... he had taken over the entire top floor, secretly installed an express elevator from outside to that floor (that was problematic during the demolition of that resort as it wasn’t on the blueprints!), and apparently never opened any of the drapes as the window facing side of them were bleached white by the sun.

I don’t think Harry Reid would be considered particularly conservative at this point in history.

Harry Reid doesn't really have any political leanings he's just a corrupt official who's willimg to do anything for a dollar and/or power. As for political labels themselves I'm not too big of a fan because things are constantly moving so it's unless it's possible to have an accurate label. What was considered very liberal 30 years ago is now considered conservative. In fact the GOP are j basically just Democrats 2012

Later on he had an idea to build a city out of a desert stop-over for GI's on the way to the West Coast. That kid's name was Moe Greene, and the city he invented was Las Vegas. This was a great man, a man of vision and guts. And there isn't even a plaque, or a signpost or a statue of him in that town!

Born Alaskan here. We have two seasons: mosquitos, and snow. Snow. We live and breathe the stuff. 6 feet on a Monday? Better be quick, or you'll be late for work. Moose on the street? Just stop. It's his road now. Did a bear take your trashcan? Oh shit, not again! Heater broke during a blizzard? Better call the morgue.
