Another thing they like to ignore is just how much a role the federal government played in the industrialization of the mid-west and the colonization of the west. This is often portrayed as the work of fearless individuals but they would have never gotten anywhere without government force, government resources, government subsidies, government laws, government grants, government infrastructure and so much more. The settling of the west was not some organic move of a people. It was a state expansion and should be viewed as such. The development of the west happened because of the federal government pouring enormous resources into it. The industrialization of the great-lakes was because of intellectual theft, massive subsidies, infrastructure projects, forced settling of millions of people, planned city building and lots more. The building of the great American industry of the Mid-west did not happen organically. It was a result of government policies and government actions. America became powerful because the country found itself in a very advantagious position with pretty much no real rivals and enormous resources. The government also acted on these advantages by pouring enormous resources into it when the opportunity arose.

As someone who also grew up in southeast Michigan, and also happened to be from a jewish family, the section about Henry Ford really resonated with me particularly. I remember in 4th grade that my school did a musical about the state's history, with a large section dedicated to him specifically, and looking back it just feels so uncomfortable. I looked up to him so much as a kid because I, too, wanted to change how the world worked. No one told me about all of his horrible anti-semitism. No one told me about his actually horrible workplace practices. I had to find that out for myself later and it felt like the worst kind of betrayal. I had been idolizing someone who, if I had been around during his time, would have hated everything I was for merely existing. Censoring this kind of information from children only leads to hurting them in the future.
@SeasideDetective2 Жыл бұрын
I'm sure Henry would have viewed you personally as an innocent child, while wanting you taken away from your parents and Christianized before they could give you your bar mitzvah. The attitude of most of the old-school anti-Semites was less "They all need to die" and more "Hate the sin, but love the sinner." Actually, I think it's good that so many people out there want to whitewash their "heroes." It ultimately doesn't help them, but at the very least it reveals that they are basically good people. Most of the time, people want to cover up atrocities not because they want to "get away with them," but because they are repulsed by them. It's only the time to start REALLY worrying when the white-washers outright insist their icons did nothing wrong, or - worse - declare that they did do horrible things, but that they were correct in doing so, and that the "others" are the bad guys.

Preserving Childhood Innocence is detrimental to children, I mean, I always remember director/animator Don Bluth left Disney because he felt they didn't respect children enough, and I remember watching his films as a kid, the guy pulled no punches with his audience; I was not shocked at all when I learned that Bluth had been a part of the movie "The Fox and the Hound" which i think was his last Disney project; that movie has a very mature look at the complexity of friendship. Bluth was so adamant about children being able to deal with complex issues that George Lucas, who did uncredited editing on some of his films and let him use Skywalker Ranch for some of his projects, had to pull Don aside while editing "The Land Before Time" and told him, listen, I agree that children can take a lot, but you aren't keeping in the graphic tyrannosaur attack scene on on the mother that results in her death, i can't even take that scene; Don agreed it was too much and had it removed. His films, along with the first animated adaptation of "Watership Down" were very important artistic experiences for me to undergo, and I wouldn't argue that as a child I couldn't have handled them, and that's just art.

I was going back through your videos because I think you have nice stuff and this reminds me of my childhood. I'm a mixed black and asian kid who grew up in Virigina near the Tennessee border. I didn't know what racism was, but I was treated differently so young. I was told in first grade when I was six by four white women (my teachers) that life would be hard for a "black girl" and they were laughing about it. The civil war was taught in fifth grade. We... reenacted it, for some reason? and each class had generals. Thankfully, our class was a union one and I was our class' general. Another kid I knew bragged he was in the Confederacy because "it's the better one". I flatly asked him which won the war. And when we learned about the civil war, my teacher did the whole "it's state's rights, not slavery!!" thing. He also rallied everyone to want to be in the confederacy because "it was their home and they had to protect their home and their land." Even weirder was the dissonance of Virigina being in the Confederacy and how they tried to make it seem good. Of course because he was Virginian, Robert E. Lee was also glorified even more than you could imagine. When my teacher asked" Who would've joined the confederacy?", nearly everyone's hands shot up. A classmate asked why I wouldn't have and I bluntly said, "Because I would have been a slave?". Oddly enough I feel theirs was more ignorance than where I live now (Pennsylvania, which has been violently racist to be in).

While it doesn't help the right-wingers, there are other views of how original sin actually works. The two most compelling I've heard are that (a) its, like genesis, is purely metaphorical, and thus Original Sin is humanity's tendencies towards selfishness. Or (b), that its less God blaming all of humanity for Adam and Eve eating that stupid apple, and more akin to being born addicted to something. Like, how a baby can be born with (pick substance of your choice) in their system because their mother was using it during pregnancy. Its not our fault, we aren't blamed for it, but we still have to deal with the physiological fallout it causes.

They don’t want their children to learn about racism and then to become fully cognizant of how racist their parents really are. They don’t want their children to grow up to disagree with them. They want to instill that same racism into their children without complaint. But racism SHOULD make you uncomfortable and if we don’t teach our children about racism and about it’s implications, about it’s motivations, and about it’s history our children will grow up to be comfortable with racism. In the end, that’s what these types of parents want. IF a child learns to understand racism they learn to understand their racist parents and then have to tools to resist, make change, and move the nation in a new direction. Edit: I should add, from experience, my parents are extremely racist. While my education could have been better about some things, they were allowed to discuss slavery and in most instances did not try to make it sound like a good thing, or as Florida is trying to do: make it sound like Slavery was beneficial for enslaved people. I admit when I was in about 5th grade we watched a film about lynchings, and it terrified me. But, i am glad it did. I am glad they had us watch it. I like to believe I would be against slavery either way, but by watching the film it gave context to something I wouldn’t otherwise understand. I was uncomfortable but I also learned the empathy needed to understand why racism and slavery are despicable and why I needed to learn more. It also gave me compassion for other kids who were growing up the same as me, but in very different worlds. BUT my parents will always hate that about me.

Children should also be made to understand that the fact that a GOVERNMENT supports something bad doesn't mean that all of its citizens - or even a majority of its citizens - support it along with them. During the age of imperialism there were many Europeans who were anti-imperialist, for reasons that were altruistic as well as self-serving. (At worst, of course, many of these people simply didn't care, and had a "That's-their-problem" attitude.) At the same time, we can't afford to be personally self-righteous, because in a democracy we are responsible for holding (most of) our government officials accountable. People who live under democracies like to portray themselves as morally pure and even as innocent victims, but the fact is that we DO wield power, and we need to do the right things with it.

No, they'll just feel bad. And I'm starting to realize that that's an unforgivable sin for conservatives. "CRT" is bad because it makes kids _feel_ guilty. "Climate alarmism" is bad because it makes people _feel_ scared. Trans people are bad because they make conservatives _feel_ icky. It begins and ends at feels, then they add whatever nonsense they need to post-hoc justify their feeling.

There’s a black man in this country I’ve often heard that people don’t want to feel uncomfortable. I have been feeling uncomfortable for the longest yet no one else ever mentions it we want certain people to feel comfortable while others still suffer. When will the people that feel uncomfortable stands up for the ones that are uncomfortable, when will the people who want to do the right thing start doing the right thing? 12:17 Alright, I keep hearing a LOT about Critical Race Theory, but I have no idea what it actually IS. I tried looking it up and went through six pages of articles bashing it without explaining what exactly it was or what the problems with it were. My understanding of it is just "CRT is bad and evil" but I'm not so sure that's accurate, given where I live and how I was raised. I'd like to be able to form a coherent opinion on it, but to do that I need to know what it is, what it does, and what it means. EDIT: Alright I turned on my VPN and convinced Google I *don't* live in a Conservative hellhole where CRT is apparently legit illegal and actually got some much less biased results. I can 100% see how conservatives would hate and fear CRT: After all, it does seek to educate kids (gasp) about the systems that keep conservatives in power, and they can't have kids *thinking*

CRT is too useful as a boogyman to define it. It's used to associate concepts vaguely with wokies, whenever conservatives need to marshal opposition to those concepts.

I would say that idolatry of public figures is not only a characteristic but also a defining a feature of right wing/conservative ideology. This is why they can't seem to wrap their heads around the concept of just voting for an individual because they are the least shit option and not because we love adore or idolize them. I feel like the personality trait that predispose them to religious beliefs make them more likely to be a part of "cults of personality" and why they constantly accuse the left of worshipping Biden or whoever.

I don't know why you'd approach such an underhanded emotional tactic with an argument in good faith. Maybe history isn't something that we should always venerate. That's the entire point. Maybe we should be made to feel uncomfortable at how the systems are leveraged to exploit those less fortunate to not be graced by circumstances of birth. Part of truly understanding is internalizing, and if we don't internalize what was erong with our history, and more importantly, why it was wrong, we get reactionary fucks who can't empathize with those who are negatively affected by policies those reactionaries put in place.

True patriotism should not be afraid to face the truth. It is easy to believe a lie. It is easy to disregard anything that makes you feel bad or threatens your worldview. But being patriotic when you know the truth of your country's history is much harder and more admirable than taking the easy way out. More importantly, there is no real way to tell the difference between those who want to cover up the past because they are ashamed of America's history, and those who want to continue the evils of the past because they are evil. You aren't afraid we are teaching your children to hate white people, you're afraid we're teaching your children to hate YOU. And you may be right

Patriotism in general is foolish, and I'd argue it's gross if it's for an imperialist nation. Just wanting your country to be better is not patriotism. And for any citizen of an imperialist nation, ONLY caring about the welfare of your fellow citizens, and not also those who are subjugated and exploited to uphold your standard of living, is thoroughly unprogressive.

I would say that there are some other, more valid reasons, to present important historical figures as pretty great guys. The one I'd like to point out is that we portray historical figures adls heroes because they were. In the same way we don't spend a lot of time on the really great qualities of Adolf Hitler and Nazism because he's not a hero. There's no reason to examine all aspects of a historical figure at the elementary or even high school level. You're generally hitting broad strokes, and when you do, you tend to get something more akin to a caricature of the person. So, a determined general and first president of our nation will always come off as heroic just because we won't talk about anything else he did. The things that matter most historically are good, brave, honorable things. We talk about Hitler as a man that used propaganda and manipulation to lead a nation to commit attributes, so he comes off as a real terrible person. Neither portrayal is perfect, but both serve the historical narrative appropriately for the overview style approach to education. Anyone doing a deeper dive into any historical figure will find they're people, with flaws and weakness and a product of their time. This does not negate their brilliance, boldness, forward thinking, or even just good luck in being the right person in the right place at the right time. That being said, I think there need to be regular reminders to students that you are just giving an overview and that history is never just black and white. Letting students know that when you say George Washington was a great leader, that doesn't mean we should emulate his every move. When you say Henry Ford revolutionized the manufacturing industry, you don't mean everything he influenced was positive. When you say Christopher Columbus led an expedition that led to the general colonization of the Americas, you don't mean he was some sort of hero. I feel the best approach is to still paint those broad strokes pictures, but lay the foundation for the realizations later in life that there are things that aren't so inspiring there as well. You don't need to teach that Henry Ford was a jerk, just stop teaching that he was some legendary, awe inspiring genius. It's okay to be generic and broad, but also, it's okay to make sure your students know you're being generic and broad so they aren't completely caught off guard as they grow older.
