A part of the problem is people are not paying the full insurance costs for these high risk areas. Many states like california prevent higher insurance rates. Then you have the national flood insurance program that basically subsidize the cost to live in high flood areas.

Almost all the value of coastal houses lies in the land; whereas the land near forest are literally dirt cheap and the value lies in the structure of the house. There are so many mothballed aircraft in Mojave and in Arizona that have been retried from passenger service and will likely never make money again. Start outfitting them with water tanks so they can be used for firefighting (it costs about $10m). Share the cost with Colorado and even Australia and other fire-prone areas. We should have a fleet of 50 of them, not 1 or two. edit: note that I am also a big proponent of better forest management. I'm not saying we should put out all fires with planes, but we need a better way to control fires when they are out of control.

The US could introduce building codes to build "proper" - fireproof buildings in danger zones. A typical European building is fireproof if the windows and doors are covered with fireproof material and the roof is modified a bit. A building does not have to withstand the fire forever, 10-20 minutes is fine. That would save money and life. Creating a fire safe zone around populated areas is already done but is not enough as a typical US home catches fire easy as it is built from paper and wood - combustible materials.

Every city in the US is in a "wildfire prone area." We knocked down the forests sure, but we replaced them with mostly buildings made of wood. There are more fires in urban centers but they are put out more quickly and more agressivly then fire in the woods, which are usually only fought to save stuctures and allowed to burn out in other areas. If rural people are still paying for when a city building goes up with thier taxes, then urban people are on the hook for wildfire costs aswell.

We need to push conservation and reclaimation projects to rebuild/preserve forests. That way when they naturally burn they arent wiping out thousands of homes. They are in areas we can fully deploy heavy equipment to cut fire break and let some areaa just burn. Infrastructure needs a complete rework. From delivering water to providing safer power delivery.

This reminds me how farmers in my country clean their land in preparation for planting rice. They burn wild grass that occupied the land after the last harvest. The ashes can be good for the soil I suppose and it's fast to burn than manually cut them. 👍

Fire Fighting is probably one of the ONLY instances where I could cosign the use of A.I. Now, what do I mean by using A.I.? I mean using those "Robodogs" that can carry equipment on their backs so that it can reduce the wear and tear on a firefighter's body. I also see it playing a role in ASSISTING rescue operations, but that's it! They should only be able to ASSIST firefighters, but NOT replace them and they also have no need to be sentient.

It shows only that how bad are the government and its forest/land management. The firefighters does not need more money or more equipment for once a year event. More temporary firefighters or hired equipment could solve the problem. It is bit expensive to build but why not build the special water lines on strategic places. Around every village or town, it is not extremely expensive. Make special fire fighting zone to stop such a wide fire front. Yes wind can ruin a load but there is always possible to use more water to prevent the fire crossings.

California alone has an estimated 33 MILLION acres of forested lands. Much of it is in steep, rugged terrain. The costs both for initial clearing as well as subsequent maintenance would be astronomical...at least several thousand dollars per person, and double that per tax payer. Also, removing material that would otherwise decompose and become nutrient for subsequent growth reduces the soil quality. For both of these reasons, the removal needs to be selective, not statewide.

@@cobrapatrol Economics won't drive 33 million acres in California, plus whatever needs to be done elsewhere. Logging is economic in some forests, conditioned on specific tree species, specific sizes, terrain and the type of logging permitted. Clear cutting is the most economical, but it is also the most destructive. Forest management now tends to use selective removal instead. I drove through the California 'Paradise' fire area, both before and after the burn. The trees in Paradise itself were tall and straight. But in the hills where the fire started, the trees were scrawny and twisted. Plus the hills are VERY steep, and only had roads on one side of the valley. What I saw recently in Utah was selective clearcutting about 100 feet on either side of an existing fire road. They had huge debris piles, where they had removed the decent trees but left large amounts of bushes, branches and trees. Many of the trees were more than large enough to log. But I assume they found either disease, bugs, rot, or old age which rendered them unusable. This is a good firebreak, except for windblown fires, where the embers have traveled and started new spot fires over a mile from the main fire's perimeter.

@@gregparrott Logging companies use tethered logging for steep grades. The debris, or slash, can be chipped up and burned at a biomass power plant or used for other uses like paper, mulch, and composite lumber. If logging is uneconomical in some areas that should be cleared to create a firebreak, then they could be given small subsidies to make it slightly profitable. Opening the forest to more agricultural uses will also keep the area clear of debris. I strongly disagree with your arguments. I also want to protect forests, animal life, and property, but the problem in California is that having huge swaths of uninterrupted forests endangers them. Break up the forests with clearcutting and agriculture. If its all going to burn up anyway, I don't see the problem in cutting lots of it down. The wildlife can easily adapt to logging, they cannot adapt to wildfires, and neither can we.

prevention is great as is blaming some worldwide hundred year term climate change behavior, but until then: one of the answers was in the video--fast all out response at the beginning of the fire before it's too big to manage. stage more fire suppression resources instead of waiting for the fire to reach 300,000 acres to call for help. cut down on the bureaucratic mobilization time required to get resources on the fire line. get enough of the right kind of structure fire suppression resources into the neighborhoods to minimize loss of entire communities. build and stage more water sources and hydrant accessibility in higher density communities. If you build a house (or a subdivision) you want to be saved in the heavy wooded where you built it, you should store enough water on site to save it, or get insurance if available...or don't expect a tax deductible loss or FEMA disaster grant after it burns down. bunch of CALFIRE guys worn out after nonstop shifts is a thin red line being thrown at the problem every year. expect more of the same next year. but, what do I know...only doing this for 20 years

Each time I think hear about new fires I think can they setup high tech type water sprinkler system to limit damage to a certain section. Would probably cost a lot to setup but useful over the long term.

A wildfire is too powerful. A sprinkler would literally not be able to spew enough water.

Sure there could be better technology and research on tactics but everyone that is actually fighting fires say the problem is for-profit companies poaching from the state and govt agencies. I'm sure there is lobbying to keep govt wages low as well too. those for profit companies rely on underpaid govt workers to do the early and dangerous work that actually saves lives. They don't have to fight fires they don't want to and as a result people die. Put the correct funds into state and federal agencies and we will have enough people to fight these fires and keep people safe.
