It doesn’t have to be. You can just grow a seed then graft onto it and most of the time the rootstock will work just fine.

I notice a few things, firstly, its seems that where you are there is no vegetative matter in potting soil, are you just using soil after grafting. During growing out the seed what are you using? If you didn't have natural soil would you use decomposed granite? or would you mix both?

Does anybody know the logic behind double grafting these plants? How is this better than just grafting once?

Hey Dom, I think the reason it's done is so they can grow the fruiting variety on a specific rootstock variety. The rootstocks they use are mostly patented varieties and likely selected for disease resistance, salt tolerance etc. I have been looking into this technique for a few months, but I would be skipping the rootstock variety and just graft the named variety onto a seedling. I first came across this Frolich method from a video by a New Zealand avocado nursery. It interested me because it seems the way that they etiolate the stems seems to make it possible to air-layer them. I think ordinarily air-layers don't normally work on avocados, but when the stems are grown in a completely dark environment they have a greater chance to root when marcotted. I thought it might be quite handy to attempt at some point so I could grow a named variety (or the fruiting London variety) on its own roots and therefore if the tree ever died back to the roots it will come back true to type 👍

@@PeterEntwistleThanks for explaining that this process makes them possible to marcot with the aim to produce plants with a selected rootstock This particular video is really informative / educational. I like that they stated that Axocado plants don't need strong light when they are young seedlings. If kept in the dark (etiolate?) then they will develop stronger root systems and the plants will stretch more, in search of a light source. Underneath the London avocado tree I saw many seedlings that had grown from fruit that had falled to the ground .... at this ground level there was very little light but the seedlings looked very healthy. I have found this to be the case in seedling I grow in the shade. So the take-away for me is to keep young avo seedlings in low light.
