How To: 1983 Honda CX650E Head Gasket Replacement

Chris' newly-acquired 1983 Honda CX650E wasn't running properly. Oil in the coolant, and coolant in the oil made us suspect a bad head gasket. In this video we show how we replaced the head gasket on this machine.

Great video. Very under ratedbike was the CX650E. Very advanced for its time and super reliable. Sold mine for a new RE Interceptor a few years ago but miss the Vtwin.

That’s because his motorcycle has an engine sets up that is incredibly easy for head gasket maintenance so he dosent have to remove the engine like on other bikes so be sure you know what you are doing.

Watched your video before attempting to install the heads on my GL 650, didn't understood wich cylinders was "Right" or Left" so i ended with a engine out of time jaja. Today i just remove rear cover to set it on time, and watch your video again so i hope my bike sounds like yours jaja

10.07 The seat on our CX650E was sitting up at the rear like that, upon inspection i noticed a tab on the seat that has to go under a metal piece on the frame then you push the seat forward to slide it under. So easy to not put on properly.

We're not mechanics, so only work on machines that we either own, or that people ask us to fix. If we come across a spark with issues, we'll definitely make a video of it. Thanks for your comment.

When you put the head back on, why do you move the engine over to top dead centre? Is there any reason for it to align the valves or something?

Yes. As the valves are all closed at TDC, you are not trying to open a valves or valves when installing and torquing the rocker shaft assembly.

We usually machine the heads in older units.

Well, if you have an older machine it is best practise to machine the head. that way you can be sure you have a good seal. That’s what we would do.
