Recall training can be one of the biggest challenges people face when teaching and training their dog or puppy. Having a dog that comes back to you when called is extremely important as you want to make sure they are safe in any situation you put them in when they are off leash.

As much as I wish I had sent my dog to Brandon for training before bringing him home kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU I am so grateful for this down-to-earth, practical guide. His training techniques and tips really work. Thank you as well for dedicating your life's work to rescue dogs, and to rescuing those of us who want the very best for our 4-legged family members.

Excellent video. My 13-month Lab-Shep pup has suddenly become very bold, cocky, and over-confident. A few months ago, I did try recall training with fifty feet of clothes line; but she just grabbed the line and ran around with it, chewed on it, fought mock battles with it, tangled it all around. That tool just did not work. Maybe that Fenrir long-line slip lead works better than a clothes-line ?

My dog suddenly became overly confident. Lots of rough and tumble rough play strengthened our bond and made him more biddable again. Maybe Will could do a video on this topic.

So I have a question my dog for sure would come running for a whistle but it would get old if the distraction was more important than the sound of the whistle and a good boy or a cookie or even a piece of roast beef so would you use a prong collar or some other kind of collar after he said I’ve heard that so many times I’m done with it thank you very much I’d rather go see a person or chase a dog or a deer and of course he definitely would be on a long line. I am in need of a lot of help

But what happens if you don't have your whistle with you? Or what happens if someone else in the vicinity blows a whistle, or the dog hears a similar sound and rockets off (as conditioned reflex) to go in the direction of the sound?

My new dog is a rescued puppy mill mama, and she's very shy. Coming to me and receiving affection isn't in itself a reward, like it was with the dog you showed here. She's also not food motivated, so I can't really reward her that way either. My hope is that over time she'll be more interested in our affection, but that could take months, and I would really like to begin recall training much sooner if that's possible. Do you have any suggestions?

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account". That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do. It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER If you have any questions let me know

I've differentiated "come" and "here." 'Come' is a more general direction, 'this way,' 'back to the group,' command. 'Here' is come to me, touch my hand and allow me to grab your gentle leader or collar. This allows me to be content with a sub-par recall, because I didn't ask for a complete one, and it's not always necessary. And it makes the complete one more reliable because it always ends in the same result.

Same here! I use come as a “this way” or “get closer” even when on leash/long line. Then I use here as a come to me/touch/grab collar. Works with no distractions 😅. I am still planning on introducing the whistle, it seems that a lot of people have good success with that type of cue.

Are you referring to a martingale collar (half-lead collar) essentially. They work in the same principle - the slip lead just has a slightly more pressure and in the sense that the dog controls that pressure - if they keep pulling, the lead continues to tighten. The collar works in the same faction but it has a limit. (at least that's how I understand the differences) but essentially they are very similar tools - I have both at home.

Just love your videos. They are extremely helpful to us. We adopted a 9 mo. old mixed breed dog from our local Humane Society in mid-December. (We're in southeast Florida, USA.) Through DNA testing we discovered that he is a Boxer (55%), German Shepherd (27%), Mastiff (10%), Bulldog (7%). He is very smart and has learned basic commands quickly. This is the next step in our training - the recall. He is a huge dog - over 60 lbs. So very different from the greyhounds, whippets and Italian greyhounds that we have had our entire married life. We will be following your videos as we take him through training for this first year of his life. Thanks for providing such succinct videos. Looking forward to the next one. (By the way we highly recommend DNA testing for mixed breed dogs adopted from Humane Societies. This is our first experience with this process of DNA testing. Besides knowing our new companion's ancestry we know whether he has any genetic markers for specific health issues and have that information for our vet.)

What if my puppy came back to me when he's leash free, but refuse to get close enough, knowing that I'm about to put him the leash to leave home ? As a wheelchair user, can't really reach him as a normal person do, so I'm depending on his collaboration. As I posted on your Instagram, he's a great 5 months puppy, adopted a month ago ! Since the first days I've decided to let it free of leash on the open fields and he behaved like a champ, never leaving the perimeter, but 3 days ago, started to follow people or dogs and not coming back when I call it, or when it does, he refuses to get closer enough, because he understands I'm about to put the leash on. Neither the most favourite rewards don't makes him comply. Maybe I did something wrong in all this time, that makes it not obey anymore, or he just tasted the freedom to much, to fast ? 😁 Oh...and we did all the good progress in about one week or so Fact is that since I have adopted it, for some reasons he runned away from me, inside the house, while outside we become friends. He didn't even playing with me till last week, while integrating perfect with my family (maybe the wheelchair scared him). I figured out that walking him out, early in the morning, before everyone else does and a lot of patience, bring us closer and did amazing progress in just 2 weeks or so.

I tried boost to +10(so 15) he yelped and shut down a little for a few mins.. so I turned the boost down. What would the correction look like or is their a video you can point me towards? Shiba owner here...have been following your videos and advice - and have been having great results and training her - she has improved loads - but I have been having a difficult time with praise and positive association? She responds well to food / toys as a reward and playtime, but if it's just praise she will usually look and scuff haha. I would definitely love to see some training with more "difficult breeds" and how to address them correctly. How do we correct off-lead? How do I approach it? I have been in the line between Phase 2 & Phase 3 for awhile now - but she knows when the lead is off and she will listen to the recall 90% of the time but she will ignore it the other 10% what happens in that 10% that she ignores? Do I take her a step back and restart Phase 2 all over?

I trained my first dog pretty alright, but with 2 dogs they are in front of you and my concern is that i'm behind and maybe they will not feel guidance and control from me later. They are pulling a little in the beginning of a walk because of all energy and excitement, after some playing and running they walk much better, no pulling at all. I also walk them separately in some days, so i could teach the young one how to behave

Really great video, thank you! My problem is that we live in the country in Spain, surrounded by rabbits and foxes. Lots of them. We have a Beagle and a Braco and they just completely lose it when they smell a scent, let alone see one. Last week two foxes popped out of a hedge in front of my wife and she was dragged to the ground by the dogs and had to let go of the leads. Normally, they'll come if called and obey other basic commands but as I said, it all goes to pot when they catch sight of prey. I'm thinking of the electronic correction collar I saw on one of your other videos as our dream is to let them roam free on our walks but we don't dare to at the moment.

I suppose Will might say that you can't take 'hunting dog' out of that beagle, but you can give him an 'on/off' switch. That's what he said about the Cane Corso -- you can't take the Cane Corso out of him, but you can give him an on/off switch. (Although, I imagine installing such a 'switch' is not easy to do.)

At 6months she is doing great but we live on a 12 acre gated property to we have gone to level 3 by letting her roam but our goal isn’t necessarily PERFECT recall vs she never goes beyond our sight and Vice versa she’s always within sight. For now fox scent, raccoons, turkeys, geese and all the other critters are just to much so she’s no longer in sight and thus no recall training. Love the advice of the of the mini educator. Video was very informative. I have a 2-year-old goldendoodle who struggles with recall when there are distractions. In a quiet setting she is spot on. In a busy setting or if something gets her attention, she doesn't respond at all even with corrections. Even with corrections she is fighting the leash/tension refusing to separate from whatever has her attention. The struggle continues.

As a side job and a hobbie I walk dogs but I do it one by one. Could you help me get a sense of how to start pack walking, I am a little worried that the dogs might get startled and I won't know what to do. Thanks a lot, I got my job thanks to your videos

@Noah McE. I always have a whistle when I am with my dogs. Where I live they don’t need leashes but they need to hear a whistle because they can range out pretty far. I use a double whistle sound too and I am pleased that they stop on a dime, run back to me, touch my hand and sit until released.

How do you teach a HUSKY to recall?
@willathertoncaninetraining
@willathertoncaninetraining 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! Starting in low distraction environments is the best way. Slowly building up as your dog is ready and don't forget long line leads are a great tool for when it comes to teaching Recall. However if you want some more support and structure check out our 7 Days to Perfect Recalls course over on our website: www.fenrircanineleaders.com

what would you suggest doing if the dog ignores you even after the correction (which I understand is the slight pulling of the leash)? My 9month old lab is really reactive with other dogs and ignores me on walks the moment she sees a dog. Calling her or lightly pulling her leash for redirection doesn't work at the moment. Even food is not as high of a value as interaction with the other dog.
