I am so lost. My baby is officially one month old and since he was born I have not produced a substantial amount of milk/colostrum. He’s been formula fed and I’m taking everything to increase my milk supply, down to fenugreek capsules, herbal teas and other lifestyle supplements and I have not seen results since Thursday. It makes me feel useless even when I pump that I cannot do the one thing I’m supposed to. This is hard yet when I came across your video I hope it will guide me to a better place mentally and emotionally to increase my supply. I just want to breastfeed my baby so that he can get the proper nutrients as well. When you said you’re going through a lot, not a lot of people would understand. I felt that deeply and it’s good to not be alone in this situation. Thank you for your video.

Worst recommendation given to nursing moms is FENUGREEK! It’s the absolute worst! Cut the fenugreek, drink loads of water, a protein shake a day, pump every 2-3 hours (you may not get much but keep at it) and plenty of calories. It’s hard but you got this mama!

Great information! I agree with most of what was shared here, except the pumping part. Moms should wait AT LEAST 6 weeks postpartum to start pumping as it takes that long for your breast milk supply to regulate and pumping can interfere with that. Putting babe to breast is the best way to build, establish, and maintain a healthy breast milk supply 🙏🏿! I’m a doula and exclusively breastfeeding mom of 5 and I share breastfeeding/motherhood tips on my channel also ☺️! Thank you for sharing ❤️!
@honeysucklemotherhood4 ай бұрын
@@ShadesofSage thank you for your comment 🫶🏼 I appreciate you reaching out, sharing your page and thoughts. This videos topic is on actively attempting to increase milk supply. As a breastfeeding specialist, I do disagree with the advice of waiting at least 6 weeks to pump. If a mother is struggling to maintain or build their milk supply (whether it’s because of gaps between feedings, birth trauma, premature birth, oral ties, etc) pumping can be a powerful and necessary tool in increasing milk supply. If a mother is struggling with their supply, advising them to wait at least 6 weeks to start pumping can set them up for failure rather than help them reach their breastfeeding goals. Ultimately the more milk we remove the more milk our body will be told to make (unless there are certain underlying medical conditions). If baby is unable to remove the milk, a pump is a valuable resource to aid in extra milk removal sessions. Thank you for all the hard work you’re pouring into your channel 🫶🏼 many blessings to you and your beautiful family.
@ShadesofSage4 ай бұрын
You’re welcome 😊! I appreciate you sharing your thoughts also! I am a breastfeeding counselor as well and the goal should always be to get baby to breast. Pumping should be reserved for times in which mom is away from baby or cannot breastfeed straight from the breasts for a reason, for example a NICU stay. As you know, baby is most effective and better at getting milk out the breast than any pump can. If latching is the problem there are ways we can help moms so that babe can get on properly and breastfeed. And there are other ways to get milk out the breast also without pumping, such as hand expression. Still, pumping adds other challenges as well, like nipple confusion when babe is offered a bottle, improper or over feeding of baby with the bottle, nipple damage, and an oversupply for mom. I just believe babies are the best guide and breastfeeding is most successful when we allow them to lead, with guidance of course ☺️! Thank you for all your kind words about my channel also and keep up the great work ❤️! Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏿!
@honeysucklemotherhood4 ай бұрын
@@ShadesofSage I think we might miscommunicating and be talking about two different situations. I 100% agree with you that the baby is more effective and better at getting milk out of the breast than a pump, when they are able. If baby is term, is able to maintain latch and suction and able to fully and effectively breastfeed, i'm on your same conclusion of allowing baby to be the one to effectively help establish supply. It's wonderful if we don't need any other tools to help with milk supply. I have not been able to experience that as a breastfeeding mother as my cases were quite different. I needed a pump. In other cases, like the case of my child who was born prematurely with very low energy and a lip and tongue tie, she was unable to remove milk effectively until we were able to get her weight up and help with tongue exercises to aid in function and mobility. Breastfeeding her more and letting her lead was just simply not an option for us as she was unable to breastfeed. Hand expression is a powerful tool and combining hand expression with pumping and breastfeeding has been shown to increase fat content and volume in breast milk. It is a wonderful method to add to milk removal. The topic and focus of this video is for those (who like me) were/are unable to breastfeed their baby directly and needed to boost milk supply to supplement their feeds in another way (or who want to exclusively pump, build stash, or any other reason). The goal in this video is to increase milk production. This is a special situation as the baby in this case is unable to effectively remove milk. In that case, a pump is very helpful. And thankfully, bottles are not the only feeding method we can employ to help our babies. There are many options and methods available. It's wonderful that each of us can find a way to make breastfeeding work in our specific situations. Thanks again! And many blessings. ❤

I've been pumping for 2 months, ive been drinking 2l of watter every day, i ate like a cow.....i couldn't produce more than 120ml... most of the time is 60-70ml. 120ml if i skip a meal for her and feed her formula then yeah. I give 120. No increase. My girl is 3 months. I formula feed her and also give her my milk anytime i can. I also took supliments and tea but nothing. I also did power pumping. No matter how much i powerpump the finish line is 120ml.
@honeysucklemotherhood6 ай бұрын
I can hear the frustration and desire to make more. I was you to know that 120 ml is a GREAT amount of milk as the content of your milk will constantly change. It is common for mums to reach a point where they don’t make more than 120 ml to 180ml. If you make more you’re in a category of hyperlactation and oversupply. You are making a good amount of milk! We often confuse formula serving sizes with how much breastmilk we “should” be making. The formula serving sizes will always be much larger as their nutritional value doesn’t change. You breastmilk does! So you might be making 120 ml of milk and that 120ml has more nutrients than the supplement! Always watch baby for signs of hunger and keep an eye on diaper output. Your body is doing a good job. And you have been working so hard! You’re a great mama.

@@KBless-uw3st it’s important to know your local laws about your legal rights for time to pump, especially if you live in America. I’m hoping your employer would be supportive and give you more time but I also know sometimes that’s not the case and sometimes we dont have a private place to pump. It’s a lot of hard work. And you’re going a great job!

Can I still get my supply up at 3m pp? This video was amazing
@honeysucklemotherhood6 ай бұрын
@@TheRealSelynaF90 thank you for your encouragement ❤️ it is possible to increase supply at 3 months post partum. Women can actually induce lactation when they haven’t even given birth (by mimicking postpartum hormones and pumping). Your body already has these hormones so it’s the frequency and effectiveness of removing the milk now. 6 times or more a day - after a feed if you’re breastfeeding. 8-12 times a day if you are exclusively pumping. It takes hard work, but it’s very good and worthwhile work. As you work to increase it, celebrate the little wins as they come. Stress can affect our supply. You’ll most likely notice a bigger output in the morning and smaller amounts as the day goes on. @honeysucklemotherhood6 ай бұрын
@@hiraakbar8886 some women exclusively pump and are able to maintain and build an abundant supply - just please make sure your pump is fitting you properly and it’s got good suction. Heat causes change. It can affect the nutrients in the foods we cook and eat ourselves as well as warming up our breastmilk. But we are still able to get a lot of nutrients even when we heat up our food. The one big rule in heating up milk is to never microwave it. Also our babies greatly benefit from something called non nutritive sucking (sucking but not eating). This can be done on your breast or with a pacifier. So even if you don’t breastfeed directly, there are benefits for your milk and for their bodies if they spend some time at your breasts even though it’s not food focused. I hope it helps 🫶🏼

Thank you for this video- super helpful! Question: If I’m not waking baby to feed & I go ahead and pump, but don’t want to bottle feed when baby wakes- will there be milk there to feed? I’m always so scared to pump in case baby wakes shortly thereafter. Thanks so much!
@honeysucklemotherhood7 ай бұрын
Thank you for this question! The amazing thing is our body never runs out of milk. If you feed soon after a pump session (within three hour) the milk will come out a little slower and it will be high in fats and can help reduce gas and also help baby put on more weight. You’ve probably noticed it in pumping - how the beginning milk is thinner and more watery and the milk you pump later in the pumping session is thicker and creamier. They’d be tapping into that thick and creamy milk. If you feed right after a pumping session, It will also be telling your body to create more milk. But if you mean you wake in the night to pump and then baby wakes 2 hours later - that will maintain supply and baby will get similar to what you pumped and milk will come out more quickly. I hope that helps! Let me know if you have any more questions!
@Whitepeachyellowpeach46755 ай бұрын
It’s actually okay to let baby learn a bit of bottle feeding. If you keep power pumping you will eventually get SO MUCH milk and baby will automatically fell in love with the great feeling of breastfeeding. My two babies all ended up rejecting bottles. I wish I could have them practiced more bottles when they were young because their refusing bottles made them quite miserable when they first started daycare 😢

There are a few things to take into consideration: 1. If your baby has been breastfeeding they have become more efficient feeders as they’ve grown. So even when you increase supply, the time they spend nursing will be about the same. This means you’ll likely experience engorgement which you’ll just need to continue to remove the milk. 2. The same principle applies - remove milk frequently (every 2-3 hours). 3. I don’t recommend supplements to the Mummys I work with because most evidence is just story based. There are little to no studies backing up the claim on these bottles- EXCEPT for morninga (you can have as a tea or put in soup) and ginger. These two foods have been studied and proven to consistently help with milk production. 4. The increase in milk supply will be more gradual at 5 months than it would be in the first month. But it will increase. 5. Babies being fed breastmilk don’t usually need more than 5 oz in a feed. The recommended oz of 7-9 is for formula servings as their nutritional value doesn’t change and they need those oz of formula to get the nutrition theory body needs. But the stomach size of a baby in naturally able to hold around 5-6 oz comfortably. So just in case your goal is based off of formula recommendations, I wanted to clear that up. I made a handout that’s a 4 day pumping plan. You can use it for a week or two at 5 months and see how it helps you. (It’s free and in the description part of the video) if you are breastfeeding already just focus on pumping 4x in a day with one being a power pump session. I hope this helps!

Somewhere I heard that with each pregnancy that your supply increases. Meaning if you were low supply first pregnancy that the second pregnancy you may not struggle as much I wanted to get your thoughts on that.
@honeysucklemotherhood7 ай бұрын
What a great question! So there is some scientific evidence that suggests our mammary glands develop a sort of long term memory which ends up leading to mothers experiencing their milk coming in sooner with the next pregnancy. The time between pregnancies does seem to play a part - the closer they are together the more dramatic of a shift you notice. So, yes! You might notice more milk the next time around and milk coming sooner, but in the end the milk supply will be greatly affected by how much milk we are removing.

I eat well enough and i have all the possible food to boost my milk supply, yet the 2-3 hours pump doesn’t give me enough milk
@ninap1926 ай бұрын
Hello! 👋 One likely reason is that most moms have the largest supply first thing in the morning. That's probably why you get more during your first pump of the day. Other reasons for the difference in the amount could be the things listed in the video- like not drinking enough water or not eating enough calories. Caffeine can also potentially decrease your supply. Don't give up, though- as long as you are still producing any amount of milk and you have the determination, there is still hope to increase your supply!! God bless 🙏❤️
@honeysucklemotherhood6 ай бұрын
Thank you Nina for responding! She’s right about the supply being greater in the morning. A lot of Mummys find they have a larger pump session first thing in the morning. This is because of a hormone shift that happens at night. Your milk throughout the day will change in calories and fat content. As you move through the day it will become thicker and creamier and often less in quantity. This is normal. Your milk gets higher levels of fat closer to bedtime to help our babies sleep better and longer in the night. Even your milk is trying to get you more rest 🤍 There are certain medical conditions that lower milk supply (like hypoplasia, certain thyroid conditions, sometimes PCOS) - also certain allergy meds can decrease supply. Your menstrual cycle returning can also lower supply. If you do not have these conditions then it’s most likely a matter of continuous drainage. Meaning keep up the pumping every 2-3 hours. It won’t be an immediate change, but it will increase based on the supply and demand relationship of our milk. Studies have been done on ginger and moringa as foods to help increase supply as well. There’s a lot happening in our bodies during this season. Take care of yourself and celebrate the small wins. You’re doing a great job It can be discouraging to not see a big change when we put in a lot of effort.

Hi. Can mom still drink coffee while breastfeeding?
@honeysucklemotherhood7 ай бұрын
As a fellow lover of coffee - it kinda depends. The official recommendation is to limit our caffeine intake to 200 mg - 300 mg a day (about 2-3 cups of coffee). Some babies are sensitive to it (especially if mummy avoided all caffeine during pregnancy). The actual transfer of caffeine into breastmilk is minimal (as long as we stay within the recommended dose). That being said each baby is different. Test and see. If you notice your baby is more fussy after a feed when you’ve had a cup that could indicate a sensitivity to caffeine. I hope it’s a non issue and you can enjoy that cup of coffee ☕️

@honeysucklemotherhood6 ай бұрын
I’m so sorry to hear that! The location of the incision matters a lot. If they cut around the areola or at 8oclock and 4 o’clock on your breast it can damage supply. Unfortunately some surgeons don’t take into consideration the possible future desires of the patient to breastfeed. Which is truly a shame because there are certain methods that can protect future supply while getting augmentation at the same time. What’s really cool about reductions is that your body can regrow the nerve connections 10 years after reduction surgery! So some mothers notice a significant impact on their supply and 10 years post op they notice a rise in production! Our bodies are incredible!
