What i learned in therapy is that one should replace a unhelpful habit with a helpful one. Dont go cold turkey on the screen time with nothing to fill the time after. You close the pc at 10 but now find something else to do for the time after. It makes changing habits way easier. And i can attest to that. It helped me immensely.

I’ve learned the same thing! One of my goals is less screen time, so I deleted some of my time wasters and kept the ones I knew would have me spiral (YT being one of them). Then am already starting to replace it with listening to music while I… crochet, read, color, journal, diamond art, etc. Any type of activity that will help put me in a peaceful resting mindset while still having multiple sensory items. Best of luck to you in the New Year and beyond!!

@@amyamy8177I've been trying to make some health - related changes for the past 5 years or so but finding good replacement behaviors just isn't that easy for everything. I meditate with tarot to give me the bit of motivation or boost that I need to get over each hump. Sending you support as you wrestle with your habits ❤❤ Physical artistic hobbies have really been my crutch, but I can't just knit or just journal, I have to mix it up. The second I make it a task, it becomes unfun and I've lost so many hobbies over time because of that, so now I just load up on cleaning chores. At least it is productive.

Goals for 2025: 1. I am embarking on a no-buy year, directly inspired by HLP (and a genuine concern that orange Jesus is going to destroy the US economy). 2. Do Pilates for 20 minutes a day, 4-5 days a week. (Deep down I want abs, I want abs once in my life!) 3. Meditate consistently and with purpose (instead of falling asleep). 4. Take an international trip before my baby turns two years old. 5. Host monthly dinners as a way to entice people in my community to discuss important topics and organize. 6. Invest in one-on-one language tutoring. 7. Begin college! Happy new year Hannah and the HLP crew!

Caroline Winkler just shared the idea that all or nothing thinking rarely leads to all, mostly leads to nothing. It has been SO good for me to reframe in this way. I am trying to support my body with better nutrition, but I get in my own way when I need my meals to have all the macros to be “good”, and I end up not eating any food at all for longer. A few slices of cheese is in fact WAY better than nothing, and that phrase has helped keep that front of mind.

Nutritional balance is built over time ! A meal doesn’t have to be balanced by itself if you balance it with the others. Yes, a balance in nutrients in a meal helps make it fulfilling so you don’t get hungry 2 hours later, but sometimes you only have time for a piece of toast and an apple, or, it’s all you have to eat. Sometimes you eat mac and cheese and pizza and cake 5 days in a row. That’s OKAY. Your body is made to adjust. The important thing is to ensure that your meals are balanced over like, 7 to 10 days. And it doesn’t have to be very precise either.

'all or nothing' thinking always reminds me of one of the most important things anyone's ever told me - "when perfectionism is driving, shame is riding shotgun." it's such a fantastic way of putting it and ALWAYS makes me realize 1. how hard I'm being on myself, and 2. how completely unhelpful that is. and it makes me feel better ABOUT struggling with these things, because they're really difficult! dealing with shame is HARD. moving through it and past it takes a lot of effort. that's why things like having grace and flexibility, and taking on change slowly in manageable bites are so important. knowing progress is rarely perfectly linear and giving YOURSELF the grace and kindness you deserve is hard. but very necessary and totally worth it. I also really like making sure I have fun resolutions in with the ones that feel harder or more serious or like work. so in addition to goals like 'declutter and rearrange bedroom' I also want to watch 50 movies this year, 20+ of which are new to me.

@@nerd-jock this has stayed with me all night! I have also wondered quite parasocially I admit, how Hannah’s no buy year happened when she had more shame in her life and thought processes. She was able to be legalistic and stick to her goals because shame was riding shotgun. If she failed, it would be shameful. Taking that break did work, and obviously was the right move at the time. AND it makes a lot of sense that since “shame is no longer in vogue” in her life that she is able to make change less legalistically, and with more love for herself than shame. I see how each edict rolls down hill. I am trying to apply this to myself, too. Shame actually doesn’t get things done in my life as effectively as compassion for myself does. Being ashamed I “wasted the day” makes me rush to try to make something up. Compassion that I got stuck in a destructive scroll cycle but can now realize what’s happening and put the phone down is way better than manic chores at 10pm. Imagine that!

Yes to fun resolutions! Yesterday I created a 2025 bingo card with mostly things to do in my new city or places to visit (watch a musical, see the ocean, read an unread book from my shelf, see a show in my local theatre). There are two bigger options sprinkled in (host a "crime dinner" motto party, take 5 to ten singing lessons) and one new skill (learn intarsia knit), but most of the things are done in one afternoon. A friend of mine inspired me to do that. Her 2025 bingo has some overlap and some different goals. We can be bingo buddies for a lot of things. The goal is to aim for most things on the list and do minimum 4 things for bingo.

I have a strategy for slowly reducing screen time: declutter the things that keep you on your screen! Delete apps, unfollow, remove from watchlist, close tabs etc. I struggled for years to limit myself despite setting "easy" goals for when to put it away. This is the only thing that has worked for me. It is so much easier to resist when you dont see all that stuff tempting you on the screen. Like on youtube i used to follow more channels than i had time to watch so there was just endless content. Now i only follow "fewer nicer" channels to borrow a phrasing from you! You can also be even more ruthless with this than with decluttering items, cause if you do really miss something you can just subscribe or download that app or whatever again.

I think one of the biggest barriers to change for me is that voice saying that my small, doable, bite sized goals are 'pathetic'. In the moment, I have to recognise that critic for what it is: a dumb voice I would never seek advice from and can completely ignore. After the moment, I remind myself that the mental labour of constantly dealing with that critic represents that massive change, those big swings. It's just harder to see that progress in the mirror ❤

I found in 2024 that despite my night owl tendencies (I'm 46 and I've always been this way), my life works so much better when I get up early, particularly when I get up much earlier than my partner. I find it so much easier to habit stack when I go from waking up to morning beverage to writing morning pages and so on until life extrinsically subjects me to a schedule (e.g. work). What I really want to figure out in 2025 is how to habit stack in the middle of the day and in the evenings. My partner is wonderful and has a big personality and lives a bit more chaotically and off the cuff than I would prefer to, so I feel like my evening plans often unravel before I've even gotten started, I don't accomplish what I want, I get to bed too late, etc. But I also don't want to be a schedule bully stomping around the house with alarms and a to-do list. That's not what life is about. Bit of a ramble there, but I'd certainly be grateful for any wisdom on how to feel gracefully on top of life, rather than anxiously beholden to its whims. 😅

A phrase that really shifted my view on habit building is 'anything worth doing is worth doing badly'. If exercise is worth doing, 10 or 15 minutes of easy movement is better than nothing. If walking is worth doing, a quick walk around the block is better than nothing. If getting dressed for the day is worth doing, throwing on a comfortable outfit is better than staying in pyjamas. If stretching is good for us, one stretch is better than none. Life is chaotic; we don't always have the capacity to do things to the level we would like to. But it doesn't mean that we shouldn't try at all!

Ugh, yes. I spent 2018-2021 creating such rigid systems for myself that it indeed changed my life. Now I am struggling because the systems exist for a life I no longer have, and I’ve felt like I’ve been grasping at straws for at least a year and a half now. Small things add up. We can all stay the course. Thank you for putting this perspective into words.

I love the 4th key being patience instead of consistency, which is what I hear most people say. This is such a great reframe because how the hell does someone stay consistent if they have no discipline (aka me). But framing it as patience makes me feel like I can do something because it takes time and I have to allow myself that time in order to develop the skill/habit I'm working towards. Excellent and timely video, Hannah!! As for my plans for the new year, my goals are to continue working towards some kind of movement everyday. This was also a goal for 2024 and I've gotten significantly better but still am not at everyday, so that goal will carry into 2025. Other goals include learning Russian to speak with my partner's family, and to complete/publish a scientific journal article. I have a few others but these are the big ones. My plan for learning Russian is to start with writing out basic words of daily items I use everyday around the house and using them instead of the English words. Then, I will begin to review my Russian lessons (I started classes a few years ago but got too busy with other priorities). Then later in the year, I will begin lessons again. My partner and I also plan to speak to each other a little bit each day (accountability). The big one for this goal is patience and to not rush myself. For my journal article, I need habit stack, so I think my plan is to take some time after work to do 30 minutes of writing or reading for the article a day 5/weeks. But if I do it 3 days a week that is okay (that's the flexibility part). I'm going to check in with a friend/colleague weekly as my accountability buddy. She is writing so we can lean on each other. As for movement, I'm going to continue doing what I have been doing, which is trying to do something with my body for at least 10 minutes a day. Lots of days I fail, but more often than not I do some kind of movement - walking, physio exercises, stretching, etc. Tracking this goal has been really helpful in getting closer to my goal. I'm open to suggestions if folks think there are ways to better plan/execute my goals (especially my writing goal). I love learning how others work towards their goals and develop new habits. Happy holidays and wishing everyone wellness and nourishment for 2025🎉🎉❤

I have a habit of forgetting to take my 5-6pm meds, I needed to make it a priority as it effects the rest of my day. I started by putting bottles of meds in every spot in my life that I may be occupying at 5, so a bottle in my purse, one next to my filming space, one in the kitchen cabinet downstairs..etc. What really turned the tide was to set timers, I have an alarm that goes off on all of my Alexa units at 5pm. I also have an reminder on my phone that triggers when I get 'home'. These small steps have taken away any excuse I may devise to not take my meds at the right time. It's given me back those last 4-6 hours of my day when before I was in constant pain by 7pm.

Regarding key 4 (patience) -- my combat vet husband taught me a phrase he learned in service...."Slow is smooth. Smooth is fast." This is key to sustainability and it's why it doesn't take long for the micro movements to add up, so long as they are very smooth (ie easy, realistic, utilizing on-hand resources/energy). I plan to start a creative poetry journaling & sketch practice for 5-10 minutes a couple days a week. Big goal is creating joy for myself and unbridled idea exploring a little daily, but I'd be happy for 3 times a week! I've already started "lightly" by keeping a sketch pen and mini sketch pad in my purse. I use ink because by its nature it is imperfect and I can't "correct" anything which keeps me moving forward --- plus it's the same tool for words and drawing for simplicity. Ink makes my movement slower, but deliberate, and it's ink so who cares that it's imperfect, it's supposed to be. Also, using one ink pen means that I have no choice in color, etc.....I do oil painting too, but for this practice I'm ditching color to force my hand and brain to focus on ideas which really makes me happy because I love color but I am really distracted by it sometimes rather than exploring other aspects of creativity. I'm kinda observing myself too..like trying to think about what naturally makes me excited about it for the next time. One thing I've identified is simply doing it for the length of one song....a wordless song for playing with words and any song for sketching in ink. So on days I don't feel like doing it, I try to simply think of what song I'll use for the next time --- that counts as doing it! That rotation of thinking about music, thinking about words and visual descriptions (sketching) is a nice variety and by using them altogether in a practice as a "buffet" seems to keep me really interested and excited. The sketching and words also make a lovely pairing sometimes. : )

My husband and I have been struggling with getting to bed on time for months now, so just yesterday we talked about it and set a slightly later “start getting ready” time. Then we paid attention and finished getting ready before our “go to bed” time and could really wind down and be ready for sleeping. It was great! We are going to keep with it for a few weeks and only then add another of the habits we want to work on. I think you are so right with the 4 keys, especially patience. A little change over time can be huge. Think what we will be capable of with 30 minutes more sleep🥳

I am in the midst of a menopause struggle and I know body strength needs to be grown as a I age or my body will decline too soon - reframe my thinking about ‘stuff’. Stop thinking of things I want or need and spend time on/with the things I already own and enjoy them - stay away from the news. Thank you for articulating what I already KNOW, but somehow cannot hear or believe from myself even though it has been proven over and over in my life.Things beyond my control are really difficult in my life at the moment and my mind and my heart are desperately grasping for things I CAN control in a monumental way. Of course that is impossible and only makes me feel more frustrated and weak.Your words and your experience remind me that I need to take the time to BE where I am; to FEEL the hard and overwhelming feeling and to know that there is not where I dwell. And it doesn't help that, because I'm paying it off fast, I genuinely have no cash on hand most months (everything goes to bills, debt, or savings). Maybe what I need is a break - make a minimum payment one month and then go back to paying it off as fast as I can. A year of informal cover letters/artistic statements - I’m a playwright so I have to do about 30 a year as I submit for things and I want to see what happens if I lean into a more casual/informal/playful tone and take them less seriously. 4. Read 4 books per 2 months: one that I already own, one that’s on my to read list (from the library), one that I get to buy from a local bookstore, and one that’s political.

Having support system is everything. My husband and I live far away from our families and have a 4 year old son. So, if any of us wants to implement a change in habits, the other one shall support. For example, I started going to gym in the morning before work 2 times a week, at 5:30. That means he will prepare breakfast and our son for daycare. 2 days a week he will bike to work, and I will take over morning chores. None of us could implement exercise in our daily routine without other one supporting it. We will celebrate 11. anniversary in January 🥰

I've been working on changes for such a long time - sometimes it seems like it's not progressing, but even with the ebb and flow up and down, I am starting to really notice the changes. I started documenting this process on my channel in a series I've been calling "A Journey to Health". For the past few months I've committed to walking every morning. For Christmas I got a weighted vest to start wearing around then house and eventually to wear on my 30 minute walks. Last week I decided that I can add 15 minutes of weight training in the morning after my walks so that is my new goal (so I found it serendipitous that you are doing this too). Good luck with your health goals and wishing you a happy and healthy New Year!

Accountability and smaller goals are so important!!! I've been doing that with Duolingo and Peloton. Now granted, no huge changes have happened but I'm working on learning Spanish and doing at least one Peloton class per day. Sometimes that will mean a 30+ minute bike ride and 30 minutes or more of Spanish a day, other times, it will be 1 lesson and a meditation. Also trying to work on bringing less into my home. I've been spending too much money, I have more debt than I would ever hope to have, and I would like to move someday and that would be a lot easier without all the STUFF. Clearly I am a little overwhelmed with myself right now but I'm trying not to spin out so I'm trying my best to do little bits and coming up with plans that will not bottom out by the end of January. Good luck with all of the things! I believe in all of us.

And then I think the best way to put the computer or phone or whatever it is down, find something you love to put in its place. This is what I've heard, not what I've accomplished. :)

Last year I started ashtanga yoga one hour every week. That was my only working out commitment. Every Wednesday evening. The improvement I saw was shocking. I was always an all-or-nothing person but I'm now converted. An hour per week is better than nothing. 10 minutes per day is better than nothing. This year I'm starting classes to learn a new language. Just one hour per week. By this time next year it will be better than nothing😊.

My resolution is to get to know my community better and do more community things which is complicated because I'm high risk for covid 19 but with boundaries and tools like n95 masks, open windows and air purifiers for indoor stuff it is possible. Accountability: I'm voicing it to my partner, we have a joint calendar and will put one date night, one friend catchup and one community thing each month on the calendar. He'll see if I'm not putting community things on the calendar. Grace: I have M.E so my energy gets completely zapped if I don't pace myself and plan rest breaks. I'm used to not beating myself up if I don't have the energy for things. Patience: something I struggle with! Making it feel realistic: one community thing any size, big or small just once a month is I feel realistic but if it feels too much in busier months I can step it back. I'd also like to work on my aesthetic and try to be a warmer person but those are longer term goals. Good luck everyone!

I think about this stuff so much!!! Currently I have one day a week completely off, where I can use two screens at once, go to bed at 4am if I want, eat only snacks and never wear my glasses. It helps me not feel trapped because if I want to do something against the rules then I can just do it on Saturday, and also it reminds me why I have these rules and I often choose to follow them anyway. I also have one day where I have almost no screen time, which helps me develop strategies for the rest of the week. I'm also trying to stop using screens at night and so far the Sleep Town app is working well, with a very realistic bedtime of 2am. I don't want to use my phone badly enough that my little house will fall down!!

Hi Hannah! Happy New Year. I think you missed out on key 5! It’s that what might have worked for you 5-10 years ago might not be the best fit for your current situation! All the points you made were interesting but for me that is the most impactful point. Doing what works for me in my present without the constraint of: “this is how ive always done it and it works”. Learning new tricks to improve your life! Thanks ❤

I am days away from my due date for birthing my first child and me and my husband have been talking a lot about screen time and how to better at that for the sake of giving our undivided attention to each other and our baby, and also setting a good example moving forward considering we’re looking to keep him screen free for a couple of years. It’s honestly quite tough. We’ve already discussed some strategies but I’ll try to think of the points you brought up and make an actionable plan. We can definitely be each other’s accountability coach so that’s already done, but I think that establishing good boundaries when it comes to realistic goals and also flexibility will be the real challenge

Every January I stress myself out trying to pile high too many unattainable goals. This year there are some rabbits I want to work on, but they all point in the same direction ➡️ Peace ☮️✌️🕊️🙏 I've had a long year and my mental health has taken a hit I need to find time to relax, to escape into creativity and let my mind wonder on things not on my to do list. So Instead of setting resolutions and goals for myself, I'm going to instead have a list of things I want to try, and see how I feel with each of those things until I am dialed back in and find myself and my peace.

I had just finished reading a note asking about my 2025 goals from my Trainwell trainer, and then decided to watch this video, not knowing it had anything to do with Trainwell. I’ve really enjoyed the Trainwell program too. I do 3 30 minute strength training workouts a week and fill in with one or two days of being on the treadmill for 30 minutes. I love how Trainwell allows me to push off a workout for a day which helps keep my routine flexible. If I can’t get to it one day, I can do it the next. And I love how it does allow you to ramp up your strength training slowly. Unfortunately I’ve fallen off the wagon after an injury and the holiday season. My goal for 2025 is to simply get back on the horse and maintain the routine for the majority of the year.

Clever as always. For me in a very messy time of upheaval - Changing the word cleaning to curating. I am not a fan of any resolutions when I have been making progress so I do not do that by date but I do make lists and do it daily. I am a fan of the Round Robin or interval techniques that athletes use to move to different stations by time … 10 minutes here followed by ten minutes on another station … I do not like ideas in my brain so the fewer decisions to make is great. I like routines of abs arms legs or whatever and I do that daily or every second day as I feel and can pull any choice as I like (flexibility). I am good at letting myself be bad at something (bake a bad cookie vs no cookie and get better). Also u have just said “only an hour of YT a week” but I can watch entertainment (Netflix etc) as yet adds more projects I do not need to take on whereas entertainment does not. I do not need to be a Jane Austen character to have that on in the background while doing something. This app seems intriguing. Congratulations!! ❤❤❤always, thank you. 45 minutes left for YT this week…

I think of patience for doing things long game style like I think of foreplay :) if it goes too fast the climax isn’t as delicious - - making a longer stretch between a challenge and its reward can be more satisfying in the end. Anticipation can offer dopamine as well, so small increments of working towards a final goal that offers both momentary satisfaction for the step but also long term anticipation for the outcome can be a nice replacement for less healthy dopamine sources. But I think you already know all this seeing as you have had such incredible success with projects that took many years to cultivate and achieve!

I can really vouch for short, easy workouts! I struggle with a pretty debilitating chronic illness. It’s important that I do strength training regularly and sort of progress up this ladder. BUT I only have about 5 hours of usable time on good days. That has to include everything from hygiene, meals, household chores, grocery shopping, going to doctors, etc. And if I overdo even these basic activities, I get sicker. If I exercise too much, I get sicker and injure myself (my illness makes it very susceptible to injury) and have to take time to heal. On top of all that, I’m starting with less than nothing, because I have to spend so much time resting; deconditioning and muscle atrophy are real concerns. So how the heck do I manage to exercise? Well, it has to be physically easy, both in intensity and duration. I will literally start with 1 minute of exercise a day. I’ve gradually worked my way up to ~15 minutes a day, or 5 minutes twice a day, etc. And I definitely need room to skip it when I’m having a bad day or when the day’s activities require me to overexert myself. And I have to be okay with starting over again and again and again if I overdo it and/or injure myself. This is the only way I’ve been able to sustain an exercise routine, and my strength really increases over time! (In case you’re wondering why I don’t go to physical therapy, it’s a 30-minute drive each way, which really eats into my usable hours. It also doesn’t prevent me from getting injured. I’ve literally injured myself in PT doing the gentle exercises that are recommended for to heal that very injury 😆.)

One tip that helped me was to work out (or X other habit) "like I brush my teeth". That suddenly clicked! Doesn't have to be a lofty pursuit, just a daily habit that shouldn't take a ton of energy or willpower to accomplish. Almost mundane, except you know you'll feel great afterwards. Further, on the days when even brushing my teeth is hard, I give myself permission to just "do a bad job of it" and 9/10 times I wind up doing the whole routine, floss and all👌

That accountability issue has been a critical aspect of my life since a car accident last year lead to post concussion syndrome. I big issue has been my structuring the accountability in such a way that it doesn't make my roommates (my children) my boss or subject to my venting frustrations for being hemmed in. When it came to mindless eating late at night rather than going to bed, my son asks me my functionally-minded quest, "Momma, are you in a headspace to make good decisions right now?" That puts the responsibility on me to evaluate myself rather than being about him judging my food or sleep choices.

Thank you for this video!!! These 4 keys make so much sense!! I'd love to finish some large time consuming artworks in the new year/produce new art pieces. Realistically, outside of my full-time job, I could set aside about 1-2 hours 3-4 nights a week to work on my art. I could ask a friend of mine to be my accountability partner, and I'd ask them if they would be comfortable if we each shared weekly updates on our projects. Flexibility could be found if I aimed for 2 hours 4 nights a week, but if I at least did one hour twice a week, that would be okay too. My timeline could be starting at 4 hours a week in January, but then trying to move up to 6 hours a week in February. My second major goal for the new year is to find a direction. I am either going to finally start my youtube channel or go back to school to do my masters. But of course, this major life decision will come with time.

I'm a big fan of using December has trial run for resolutions. And this year I have 3 main goals. Some I am doing pass/ fail because I need to be strict. Others i will be easing in and will be built up over time. Maybe with a end goal each month. 1) sleep / screen time started in December, brought an alarm clock, sleep with phone not in the room and bed by 12. Working well so far ✅️ 2) low buy year/ saving - managed 6 months last year, and I want to do the whole year 2025. 3) Mediation - have fallen off the wagon here. Week one 5 mins a day, going up in increments each week so by February 20 mins each day. Then to maintain the 20 mins for that month. Accountability buddies include best friend who is doing low buy with me and sister for sleep and meditation 💚

I was really good about doing yoga in the morning and walking my dog for about 45-60 minutes, but I really needed to work on strength and increasing my cardio health. I started with 10 minute workouts as soon as I came home and that has stuck. My goal is to move those up to 20 minutes, and I only do them Monday through Friday, too. My inclination is to do something big but then I don't stick to it. I also am going to implement and high/low bar for daily habits. There's the ideal and then there is minimum level to be able to check it off.

For me I would do accountability by automating keeping a record for the future self. Realistically I would want to do the behavior sometimes just less, so if I displace the behavior half the time it’s still considered a consistent pattern, but then I could slowly move up to replacing more in like a month. I feel like so much of this would rely on mindfully recording the new behavior that I want to displace the old behavior with. Like an “hours spent on new behavior per day” that spits out a line graph in response to my input. LOL But I like this idea so much
