Finally the ACOTAR discourse we’ve been waiting for. A friend of mine recently did the kindest thing imaginable in regards to these books. She gave me the series on the very night that a long term relationship ended in my life with this sentiment which I believe perfectly sums it up “Books are either kale or chips. Kale is wonderful and you read a lot of kale. But now is the time for chips and here is a very tasty bag” Bless Sarah J Maas and may many crunch and munch their way through these salty tomes of smutty escape

Love that for you. I read so much kale and I’ve been sprinkling in some snacks. Full time work, full time school… and I love to read and learn so I can’t NOT read. I never knew I liked this genre, but here we are. They’re a wonderful friend when you need them. Hope you’re doing well 🤗

I always thought the English language needed a word for this kind of literature, so I always teach English speaking book friends the German word "schmöker". Meaning light fiction, longish escapist book, voluminous page-turner... Schmöker!

Hannah, I consider you a bit of a Queer Icon™️ I know you have a husband and a baby, and I am not in the business of speculating on someone’s gender or sexuality, but it frankly doesn’t matter how you identify. I always appreciate how you uplift queer creators, and how you are a staunch ally for marginalized communities to which you don’t necessarily belong. AND you do it elegantly and casually, without making a big deal of it. I think some people have “queer” as an identity (hi, it’s me) but I think some people also have “queer” vibes even if they are straight. I think of certain people as “academically” queer, if you will: living subversively, being unapologetically authentic, true to themselves, compassionate towards marginalized people, even if you aren’t in that particular community. Anyway, I appreciate your content, your nuanced approach to your work, and your ability to provide earnest levity to your community!

Hannah as a LONG time fan of Brian Jordan Alvarez, it brought me sooooo much joy to hear you wax poetic about his work for 10 minutes, and I think you absolutely NAILED the thing that makes him (and a few other actors) so special - the tuning fork image was so great, and also the "hole punched into the world from the divine plane" or whatever is SUCH a specific but immediately recognizable as true. I didn't know about the current dancing videos but during the pandemic he made these youtube videos that were just him dancing alone in his apartment and i would go and watch one or two whenever i felt particularly bad. Its so wonderful to see the world catch on to his genius.

You mentioned Maintenance Phase, which I wholeheartedly recomend if you haven't already listened. I love everything in the Mike Hobbes cinematic universe (as you'll see by my second suggestion), but Aubrey Gordon is also incredible. The entire thing has such a thoughtful and necessary point of view. My other favorite that I think you'd enjoy is You're Wrong About, especially the earlier episodes with Mike. Sarah Marshall, the other co-host, has this amazing ability to say the most relatable commmentary about our lived experience that make you say "yes that's it exactly". Much of it focuses on dissecting moral panics and exploring with commpassion various maligned women of the 90s. I recommend starting with the Princess Diana, Jessica Simpson, or Amy Winehouse episodes. It's so so incredibly good.

Hi Hannah, as always this was beautifully timed as the winter blues are starting set in. As a very picky podcast lover who greatly enjoys the podcasts you’ve been listening to I cannot recommend these enough: If Books Could Kill, Maintenance Phase, and You’re Wong About. They’re all in the same podcast cinematic universe (maintenance phase is with Aubrey Gordon) and they’re all very well researched, comforting, and feel like you’re sitting in a big cushy chair in a library with two of your favorite professors (in a fun way). I think you’d love them. 🩷🌻

these recommendations and bits of light are some of my favourite content of yours. i'm a poet & philosopher (currently in school) so i also process things on a deep level and love things for their duality, in seriousness and in levity. a 15 second tj mack video is so comforting and humourous because the character feels so genuine and lived in, so absurdly innocent and yet also ironic. from a sensitive soul navigating this world with its rich hues of joy and suffering, to another, thank you!

Dressing up and doing my makeup has been my most effective form of self care. Ever. My baby's 1 now and has been at private daycare for a few months because of my 9-5 but I can seriously do all my work in half the time and pick her up early if I just do my makeup and make an effort when picking out my outfit for the day. Same for my office days, they end up way less stressful and more enjoyable when I'm dressed to murder my task list.😁

In preparation for these dark nights, I bought myself a matching set of pajamas (something I never do, but I now plan to do every year for this day) and I thrifted an oil lamp that I light during dinner. So happy to see the return of things cheering you up right now! Your book recommendations are always so good! For much of my pregnancy last year I was too nauseous to read or look at screens so I spent a lot of time listening to audiobooks while knitting and I devoured the Thursday Next and Deadly Education series after you talked about them. I can’t recall if you’ve mentioned reading Natasha Pulley but if you haven’t you might enjoy her work, particularly the Watchmaker of Filigree Street. It’s speculative fiction set in Victorian London with beautifully written complex characters who happen to fall in love, very much in the vein of other books you’ve liked.

Hannah, I am right there with you with the trashy romantasy novels! I would like to add that the Throne of Glass series gets WAY better after the first two books. I think it’s worth it to slog through them to get to the rest of the series.

I agree about ToG - it gets much better, and the romance in that one feels more real, more earned.

Putting in another recommendation for You’re Wrong About, I actually feel that you and Sarah Marshall are kindred spirits-you both have such a lovely turn of phrase, an ability to convey your emotional connections to whatever you are interested in a way that is very moving to me. There are so many good episodes, but recently found the Trad Wives one fascinating, also Martha Stewart. On a different note, I’ve also been on a closet editing journey this year, moving closer towards understanding my personal style and I’ve enjoyed following along on your journey with your recent videos. I’m curious if you’ve ever delved into Allison Bornstein’s content, specifically her three word method? While I don’t think people need to follow one system to find their style, after watching your video on distilling your aesthetic, I was so curious what your three words would be?

Hannahhhhh I’m delighted at your mention of A Bit Fruity! I started listening to that podcast within the last few months and loved each of the episodes you referenced. Somehow I hadn’t heard of Natalie from Contrapoints before the JK Rowling interview, so a whole new world has cracked open for me here on the internet 😂 such good stuff! And I love Maintenance Phase too. Thank you for your own pinprick of light for all of us in this dark moment ❤

This year has been rough. Not just what is happening in the world but I've been struggling with my health. Last year I got diagnosed with celiac which was great because it's an answer to a lot of problems but also terrible because now I can't eat gluten (not that I should have been eating it before but I didn't know). The problem is every time I start to feel better in one aspect an new problem comes up. Since January I've had edema in my legs and I've done a million test with no answer. However what has cheered me up the most is that my acid reflux has subsided and I can now drink tea again which I haven't been able to do for over 2 years. Also as always your videos have been a great companion on my lonely days. Thanks for all you do 💜

That IG story of your little boy running around in his chicken costume gave me the biggest boost of serotonin. Even just thinking about it makes me smile. It makes me miss working with little kids, they live a life of unfettered distraction.

I love "you're wrong about" and if you want a deep dive into some history that I find very pertinent to what is happening in our country rn, "motive: season three" is excellent.

I took my kids to see the first ‘Inside Out’ when they were little and now they are 22 and 20 and they wanted to see the second one with me. I ugly-cried too, especially since I took them as ‘kids’ and now they are adults and still wanted to see a movie with me. 🥺🥺

I love “romantasy” and paranormal romance. I didn’t see anyone mention Karen Marie Mooning’s fever series or Kresley Cole’s The Arcana Chronicles yet. The Minimalists podcast has helped me be more thoughtful in every area of my life. I co-sign on all the recommendations below and it’s awesome to see that HLP fans have so much in common.

Podcasts! I love Finally! A Show About Women That Isn't Just a Thinly Veiled Aspirational Nightmare. Each episode is a woman sharing a day in her life, radio documentary style. Often hilarious, always uplifting. I've also got two recs for writers who like a gentle touch of the woo in their writing practice without going full-on Marnie T: Botanical Studies of Internet Magic by Kening Zhu, and The Inspirited Word (full disclosure, this is my own podcast, but I promise I don't use it to shill classes).

As someone who is postpartum for the second time, I resonate strongly with the notion that dressing better can improve ones life. I am not, and I am craving it!! With a little more time and headspace eked out, I'll get there. Meanwhile, I would live to ask you, Hannah - what makes an aesthetic viewpoint? Are there questions that one can usefully ask oneself to sharpen it? And aside, have you read any Andrew Taylor novels? Meticulously researched historical crime fiction. Brilliant.
