I read the book and this advice helped me get a raise. I didn't get what I wanted but my boss wasn't going to give me a raise at all. This also helped me fight to get my bonus back when I found out they were docking me when I took time off for medical appointments (which is illegal) without having to go to the state with legal action.

Have these people ever ACTUALLY worked in big corporate? They have anonymous people in HR that control all these things (pay increases, bonuses, etc.) that must follow rules/guidelines to make every at that pay rank equal. They are invisible and hands off behind the scenes so they don’t have to talk to you and deal with any of this. And then boss runs back and says HR can’t do it/approve it. HR is fine if you go kick rocks. HR already does their own research on market rates and don’t care about your own research. This is such a waste of time.

Bosses won’t commit to being pinned down on this crap and deliverables because again it’s run by the invisible people in HR. Often the bosses that do are stringing you along for another year or two before they expect you to leave. A boss’s goal is to not raise a fuss and protect their own job. Very very few will stick their neck out there in these extremely unrealistic scenarios in the real world. They gotta protect themselves first and keep their own job.

Vivian worked in JPMC equities trading, and at Buzzfeed sales. Also they don't make pay ranks equal, there are pay bands for each level. So you have tons of flexibility within all the bands as a candidate.

@@rudinah8547 for how long did she work these jobs and truly go through all these processes? And yes, there are pay bands but is there really tons of flexibility? Not typically since again, it’s dictated by anonymous people in HR that say “this is the max we will pay this person”, then some slight negotiation maybe at best, and that’s it. Or if want higher for the candidate then go in front of a committee which is often told “no additional amount for the candidate” and if you do that too much then you are now on the chopping block. Corporations are simply not designed for individuality, over the top raises for great performance, or independent thinking, etc. Go be entrepreneur if you want this much control but these pay raise videos are EXTREMELY unrealistic, even for high performers.

While this is true for massive companies, a lot of companies do operate under this model and allow for the employee to negotiate. If your company does not give opportunity for negotiation, the video is not entirely for you.

I took this advice and I got a raise. It also helped when I found out I was being docked my bonus because I took time off for medical appointments (this is illegal) and I had to fight to get my bonus back and I wanted to do it without having to threaten legal action.
