Thank you for the tutorial! My guy I just discovered if you use a null material instead of specular you can have a light source within the volume cube and can hide it from the camera.

There has got to be a way to use a texture to affect the fog density but I can't figure it out.

Plug the noise texture or any image texture to scattering in volume medium node and control the density with gradient node.

How did you preview the Gradient Map? Ctrl Shift T for me only opens a new image search, plus searching for the oct emission viewer Node gets me nowhere. *I don`t think the node wrangler is working from the link is working on the new version of oct blend.
