After some testing with Lynxdeer, we discovered that *stereo* sound files play globally in Minecraft rather than positionally (Meaning you'll hear the sound everywhere on the server rather than within a distance around the sound source). This is probably how the game plays its music globally. Consider converting your .ogg files to *mono* instead! There should be converters online, or you can use a DAW like I did (Audacity, Ableton, Logic, etc). Just leaving this comment here as documentation in case anyone else runs into the same problem.

@@Lynxdeer so, as it turns out, I did everything right, but I'm an idiot so ofcourse I made a stupid mistake. Instead of throwing my sound into a converter to make it a .ogg file, I just removed the .mp3 at the end, and put .ogg there. Which has worked before, in bedrock but it did work

Yes, you can! You can change the "volume" for a sound in sounds.json. Contrary to the name, this doesn't actually change the volume of the sound itself, but instead makes it so that it can be heard from further away.

This should still work fine in 1.20.1- to my knowledge, they haven't significantly changed how sounds.json is used since I believe 1.9 when they added subtitles. If you're trying to change the chest sound, this tutorial is not for you; this tutorial is on how to add *custom* sounds into the game, while you may want to refer to another tutorial to change sounds, but yes, if you just want to change a preexisting sound, you just locate where the original sound is and change it. For example, the chest's sound path is pack/minecraft/sounds/chest/open.ogg

Yes! That's actually a lot easier than doing this, and this tutorial actually isn't necessary for that, since you don't need to change sounds.json. To do this, you'd just need to replace the sound in the correct directory. I'd say look at a different tutorial for that. Also, if you want to change the kill sound on hypixel, I'd recommend using OofMod instead, as that won't mess up anything else that has the same sound.

When I do this, Minecraft gives the sound a random pitch every time it’s played. I just want the pitch that the audio is originally in. How would I do that? I was on the wiki and it said pitch is set to 1.0 but you can change it. I do and it still goes random.

Are you attempting to modify a minecraft sound or adding a new one? And yes, according to the wiki, you should be able to just set the pitch to 1. Did you reload your resource packs after trying? I know adding sounds is a feature. But I want to be able to have a sound play for inserting a disc in a jukebox. With just a resource pack, no, though you could add the scratching sound before the music by editing the music disc files directly. You could also use a datapack or plugin to detect when a music disc is played, then play the scratching sound followed by the disc.

There are a few options for this, and not all of them need you to make a whole resource pack just for this! The first option is to just turn your "Blocks" category in sound settings to 0%. The second option would be to use vanilla tweaks' "Quieter Droppers" option in their resource pack picker (vanillatweaks.net/picker/resource-packs/). The third option would be to change sounds.json to have the dropper sound be at 0 volume. And finally, you absolutely could just replace the existing dropper sound with an empty sound file, by replacing the .ogg file in its directory (look up minecraft assets to find the director path)

Do you mean minecraft music? I don't think you can add new ones, since they're hard-coded into the game, but you can replace existing ones, or play your custom sound using data packs, command blocks, or server plugins to play your music.

This still works. You are trying to do something completely different- these custom sounds can only be played via playsound! If you wanted to add another soundtrack to the game, you could look through the sounds.json wiki (minecraft.wiki/w/Sounds.json) to find out how to have more than one sound (random chance to play either) in one sound registration, then replace a music file using that.

You have to increase the volume of the actual sound with an external tool like audacity, as using the "volume" setting in sounds.json only increases the distance at which point the sound starts fading out due to distance. This is the same with the "volume" setting in /playsound.

I know how to change the “attack.nodamage” sound (the one that plays when you punch the air). However, I’m currently wondering how I can make a specific sound play when you punch the air while holding a trident, as I’ve replaced its textures with that of a lightsaber. None at all? Likely a separate issue- check that your sounds.json is valid, that your windows sound mixer has minecraft sounds enabled, that your category is correct, that that category's volume is more than 0, and probably a whole other variety of things. No, you cannot use mp4 files nor add videos to resource packs. If you want to display a video, you could have a custom font with each character being one frame of said video, and then change the frame with a repeating command block, datapack, or plugin.

Verify that your json is correct, check your client logs, make sure your audio file is mono and in ogg format, make sure that your audio file is playable outside of minecraft (which it should be anyway) If it didn't appear, then you didn't do "all" correct- double-check everything to find the problem!

I need more details than this. I can't know what went wrong without seeing your json file. on my programing knowledge, no need the same amount of space, you can press even space 1 time, cuz the computer will read only 1 space, so be smart

Dunno what kind of "programming knowledge" you have, but indentation literally doesn't matter in JSON- it's just standard practice to use either the tab character or 4 spaces to indent some areas to make the file more human-readable. I personally use the tab character, since it's faster to type and reduces file size. Technically, you could compress the json to have no indents and save a lot of file size that way, but it would be more difficult to read.

in the sounds folder you have to make a folder (Own name). Then in the .json file. you have to change the category name (in his vid master) to your folder name. I think this is going to work. I am not 100 percent sure.

Have you set the command to “master” and put the volume up? It’s the value afterwards, try “100” and also check if your Minecraft master is high enough and enabled

No, because minecraft only accepts the OGG file formats for audio.
