In depth video on the newer style carburetors found on single cylinder Briggs and Stratton engines on riding lawn mowers, this one in particular came off a 14.5 HP B&S OHV engine, newer models will have a fuel solenoid on the bottom. Thanks for Watching!!!

Hy, Mikky here, from the UK, Scotland. Just come across your channel in the last couple of weeks, absolutely brilliant, liked and subbed every time! As you can see, i am playing 'catch up' with your video's, this one from 2013! I have two questions from this video if i may? The first is at '7.49' in the video, you show the mixture adjustment screw and how to take it out, i've no problems with that but what does the ''T'' stamped on the main body mean, is it significant, or just a part letter/number? And my 2nd question is at 13.33 time, is that a rubber gasket was used on there, can they be used all around the small engines, except the cylinder head gasket, which, from what i have seen on your other video's is the metal type? Please excuse my ignorance in such matters, i am a novice! However, i have been given 3 British made 'Suffolk Punch' push along Lawn mowers. 2 of them are aluminium types from the 1980's, and one-(rare so i am told)-is cast iron and from the 1960's.....ALL have Briggs and Stratton units in them. I am retiring in 2.3 years-(and counting down!!)-so these mowers i have-(plus an MTD with a briggs unit on it, plus a nasty little italian push mower from 2006-PLUS a Sealy stand up drill press!)-are for restoration when i retire. Any help given by you in your video's in invaluable to me, as i will use it to help me in my restorations. Thank you so very much for your intelligent and concise information, i look forwards to more video's from you, old AND new. Thank you, once more. Mikky.

Does the old one piece carb have the longest lasting needle seat life ??? What about the new two piece type, do the needle and seat really last long ??? Thanks VF

I've had better luck with the older one piece carbs, I'd say needle/seat life are about the same on most carbs, I like them better to because you can adjust the high and low mixture and not just a single adjustment like on the 2 piece carbs. Thanks for Watching!!!

On the variety with a fuel solenoid the screw hole on the side of the nozzle housing has a small screw in jet. This is actually the main jet which may need cleaning with a tiny wire. In carbs without the fuel solenoid the hole is there (shown in this video) but the tiny jet isn’t present.

Its funny you mention that because the 2nd carburetor i showed in this video showing the fuel connector, it originally had the fuel solenoid, you won't want to remove the jet, but you can remove the solenoid and replace it with the bolt, as long as its not to long or it will block gas from being pulled up. thanks for watching!

I took mine apart (Briggs Intek 17hp) and if you pause @ 9:35, you noticed a hole facing up about 1/4 inch from the brass piece that you're screwing back in. Mine has a brass hollow nut in that hole. Its really small and you have to unscrew that nut to clear the passage when removing the brass jet/nozzle. Also, the bowl has a solenoid that covers the nut. The only way to remove that nut is either grin a 1/2 inch or 10mm wrench for it to fit. I took some vice-grips which I'm not proud of but, I don't want to grind my tools. You need to buy specialty tools now to rebuilt a carb. It sucks. Good video. It covers a lot of things I wasn't aware of. Thumbs up !

I have the newer LMT carb. Where you took that flat screwdriver jet out, mine doesn't have that. There is just a small brass looking like ball. Does that come out?? I race mowers and this last weekend I could not get full throttle cause it sounded like it wasn't getting fuel. Also the plug was white from running lean. Any ideas. Great video by the way
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 8 жыл бұрын
Alot of the newer ones don't have the jet, i'm not sure of the ball your talking about but, on most i've seen the bolt that holds the bowl on is the "jet", its T shaped and has be really clean or it will run lean. Also remove the mixture adjustment screw (if it has it) and clean through that passage as well, i had one that would not adjust in and was running to lean, and turns out there was something wrong with the adjustment screw itself, it may have bent or dented but i put another one out of another carb on it and it ran like a new one. Thanks! Hope this helps, if not let me know and i'll try and figure it out! Thanks for Watching!!!

Great video to help my 12 yo son and I trouble shoot an over revving 10.5HP Briggs ride-on engine. Once we pulled the Walbro LMT apart we found the round flap on the throttle spindle lodged in the manifold, the 2 screws nowhere to be found! Seen this before? Should we pull the head off to look for the screws? I'm also wondering were to get replacement screws. Love your work.

Thanks! Glad to help out. I never had that happen, but have heard of it. You could pull it off just to make sure, if they are in the cylinder they can cause valve or cylinder damage, they could be stuck in the muffler too if they went through the whole cycle. If you take the shaft out you should be able to get it matched up at a hardware store, or drill it (not much!) to the next common size and rethread them. but you should be able to get them matched up. Thanks for Watching!!!

This is one of your best videos ... but they are all good! That being an older carb, I guess that's why it has no solenoid. Friend has a 14.5 Briggs with the LMT carb. Solenoid was funky so he cut off the plunger, then the carb worked fine. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to backfire either. Why do you think this is? Final question: some say to add a fuel shutoff valve if you disable the solenoid. Is this necessary?
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 10 жыл бұрын
***** Thanks, really appreciate that! Yeah, thats why it didn't have the solenoid, which i prefer not having one, its just another expense, some motors won't backfire with the solenoid, just depends on the motor. Hard to say really, the main reason they backfire is when the mixture is set richer, its excess fuel that was forced into the muffler that does it, some just don't do it, i don't know why. I'm not really sure on that either, but I highly recommend putting a fuel valve on these carburetors (with or without the solenoid) because they are BAD about the float sticking and flooding the motor out, if you ever have one smoke like a freight train, check the oil, 80% of the time there will be a ton of gas in the oil, i drained almost 4 quarts of "oil" out of a 14.5 one time! I run a fuel valve on all of mine, always shut it off and run the carburetors dry every time to prevent them from gumming up. Thanks for Watching!!!

Great video and explanation to a novice like me... Instead of cleaning the Walbro carburetor I bought a new one on Ebay,,, but the new one has a straight pointed out fuel inlet,,, and the old one has the angled plastic inlet,,, I can get the old plastic angled inlet off, but how do I get the metal inset out of the old carb.?? Does it just pull out with a bit of muscle? and then press into the new carb?? Or shall I look for an extra angled elbow to place in the fuel line... Many thanks and Cheers,,, john

Thanks, the metal part should pull out, but it may be damaged in the process, I have seen pre molded fuel line for just that purpose. But for a quick fix i'd go with the elbow in the fuel line. Thanks for Watching!!!

I'll second wearing safety glasses. You only have to make that mistake once. Anyway, if you do get it in your eyes, get an eye dropper and some milk and put a couple drops of milk in your eye(s) every 10 minutes or so... I know it sounds weird, but it works. Takes maybe 45 minutes to an hour to completely neutralize the cleaner. Thanks for the video!

Thanks from the UK for a very informative video. Unfortunately the brass main jet has resisted my attempts to unscrew it completely as the corrosion near the top of the aluminium housing made it bind and the slots have rounded off. Falcon Kits Thanks! I hear ya. I've never dipped that particular carburetor, but i have dipped the 5 horse carbs with the long plastic pickup tubes and never had problems with them, i don't think it would bother it, but i can't say for sure, the main thing you have to be careful with is rubber bowl gasket, rubber tipped needle valve, and the plastic float. I don't think its necessary to leave in overnight, 1-2 hours should work fine, and what really helps is blowing compressed air through all the passages right after you pull it out of the dip. I wander if you can prop it up somehow so that only the elbow is exposed just to be on the safe side? Hope this helps! Thanks for Watching!!!

Theres a couple ways to do that, first they actually sell a tool to do that, kind of looks like a pick or crochet hook, or you can sometimes use a screw/machine screw to drive into it and pull it out, but before trying either method, make sure it has a seal, some older carburetors do not, then to put the new one in, use a bolt or a punch that will fit the seal and push it back in. Question: I have one of these carbs on my 13.5 hp Briggs. Pulled the bowl off and cleaned everything. Pushed the float up and tried blowing thru the fuel port and it closes. Put everything back together and when I turn the fuel valve on......it doesn't happen really fast but over the course of about 10 minutes with the engine not running....fuel will flood the cylinder. Will a new float and needle valve fix this?

I am not trying to supersede fnaguitarplayer9's advice on this, but it has been my experience that whenever this happens you will need to replace the needle seat. It stands to reason also that if you are going to replace the seat you should also replace the needle itself...much as you would the old points and condensers. You just don't replace one without replacing the other. I have dealt with this problem many, many times and this has always been the source of the problem in my experiences. There are several videos out there which will walk you through this procedure. I wish you well.

I agree, but alot of times the needle itself is all thats needed, but like you say you might as well change it while your in there. just like if you tear a engine down that threw a rod, might as well put new rings in while its down. Thanks for Watching!!!

***** First thing that comes to mind is maybe the needle isn't seating right and is leaking past it, did you change the needle on the float? If you did it may either need a new float (the plastic kind of warps from the gas after a while) or the seat that the needle goes into may need to be replaced, now if your talking about the older style carburetor with the metal float, it can be adjusted i have videos on how to do that. Diamond B Gunsmiths Thanks, appreciate that! Yes, I have, you can usually buy it individually or in a kit for the carb, i get most of my parts from tulsa engine warehouse (tewarehouse.com) and off of ebay. You can use a screw extractor on them, but if that doesn't work, the carb will probably have to be replaced. Now sometimes you can get buy with leaving it in and just cleaning it really good, get one of those cans of carburetor cleaner in a paint can with the strainer and let it soak for a long time (like a hour or so) and use compressed air to blow it all out with. No problem, thanks for watching!!!

You might have to get the rebuild kit for it, or at least try putting a new float and needle valve in it, alot of times the float will deform since its made from plastic and it won't let the needle close off, letting excessive gas pour in, and replace the needle at the same time, it may need a new seat for the needle valve as well. let me know what it does after this.

Thanks for showing this carburetor. I have a 10hp generator that is surging and this gave me some tips on how to clean the LMT carburetor.

Nicholas Smerk your welcome! If cleaning/adjusting the carb doesn't fix it, you may need to adjust the governor, i have another video on that if you need it. Thanks for Watching!!!

I can't get the nozzel out, and can't source a replacement (they stopped making the one I need). I'll have to drill it and shove an ez out in it. My idle circuit is clogged up...ugg. I'm trying to find a spare carb to work on.

Nicholas Smerk before doing that, i would suggest getting one of those carburetor cleaners that you can soak the carburetor in (they sell them at walmart for like18 dollars) and let it soak for a few hours, then blow everything out with compressed air, just to see if it really needs replaced, most of the time the nozzles just need cleaned. Also you may want to replace the mixture adjustment screw, i had one that would not run at all, thought i'd try another screw just to see and it ran perfect!

I already stripped out the nozzel, but it may still be worth trying to soak it. This is the one that doesn't have a idle adjustment, only a screw (no needle) to cover a fixed jet. Was able to get half of it cleaned out, but the openings in the nozzle must still be clogged up.

Nicholas Smerk i hear ya. I hate that type, they are very very picky to dirt or anything thats not normal haha it is worth trying to soak it.

Where is the diaphragm on this carb?
@fnaguitarplayer9
@fnaguitarplayer9 8 жыл бұрын
This is a float-type carburetor, no diaphragm, some will have a external vacuum fuel pump, but its separate from the carburetor. Thanks for Watching!!!

+fnaguitarplayer9 Dang! I have a B&S with a two piece carb. (Not a Walbro but...) I took it apart and cleaned it. It is set up pretty much just like the one you show here. I replaced the plug, air filter, needle, seat, fuel line and fuel inlet (including the brass insert). Also replaced and regaled the coil/magneeto. The engine will purr like a kitten all day at an idle. As soon as I try to give it any throttle or put any load on the motor, it will die. Any thoughts? Thank you in advance for any help and keep up the great videos!!!!

I hear ya. Sounds like it could be a clogged passage in the high speed circuit, or possibly the engine's valves need adjusted and or reseat, sometimes they will cause a problem like that. But i'd say its a clogged passage in the carburetor, or a clogged jet, take it apart again and spray carb cleaner through all the passages and follow it with compressed air. Hope this helps, will do! Thanks for Watching!!!

How about the needle valve seat? Is it rubber, how do you replace it if it is bad? Great Video.

+ug mold If it has the rubber seat, then you can usually use a bent hook/pick or a small screwdriver to get it out, some use a screw, screw it into it slightly and pull it out, everyone has their own way. Then the new one just presses back into it. Thanks for Watching!!!

+fnaguitarplayer9 Maybe it will turn out to be a float issue like yours as mine is also a plastic float, I hope not will be a waste of money on the rebuild kit I just ordered. Thanks for the reply.

+fnaguitarplayer9 The rebuild kit I got came with 4 jet/nozzles, one matched, but I reused the original, it also came with 2 rubber needle valve seats and 2 brass seats. Also 2 needles, I used one that had the rubber tip, and I merely cleaned the brass seat. The rubber seats don't seem to be made for this carb, or my in particular. The engine started right up and purr's. The problem I was having is that gas would run into the manifold and end up in the oil of the engine. I installed a shutoff valve which helps, but wanted it right. I guess time will tell. Thanks.

+ug mold I hear ya, they always come with extra parts for other carburetors, you may have to remove the existed needle valve seat, or find a shorter needle valve for it to fix the float, did you repalce the float itself? sometimes thats all that needs to be done, the gas works on the plastic after a while and warps it some.

This has to be one of the best instructional videos on YT. You, Sir, are to be commended for creating a video that is about and only about the task in hand. Nearly every other video on most types of subject creators generally suffer from that chronic condition called VD (verbal diarrhea). So refreshing and interesting to watch even if you haven't got an LMT carb. I almost missed a very important small piece of information that cured my problem (no I don't have VD... that's of either sort) and that was the one and half turns on the mixture screw to get started. Mine was four turns out of the carb, no wonder it didn't start! Great Video and thoroughly enjoyed.
