I replaced my blown (con rod thru cylinder wall) adjustable jet 1996 Tecumseh 10HP Snow King with a new one that has the black plastic cap over the idle jet screw. As there was no spring on the idle jet screw, I suspected it, had been re-designed as a fixed jet, and after unclogging the jet I snugged it down just slightly more than finger-tight. Fired up, the motor runs great at full and idle. Your video was a great help, and snow is due tonight.

You can not believe how happy I was to find your videos. I inherited an old monster Craftsman Trac snowblower that hadn't been used in a few years and didn't even run right when it was. I spent the summer searching for information on it, starting with the manual, which is about as elusive as a unicorn. One recommendation if you do another, suggest that fuel tank be emptied after the carburetor is removed. The old fuel had a funky orange color to it. Many of us don't think to completely empty the tank after the season is over and this oftentimes causes the carburetor to gum up.

Donyboy, you have such a wealth of info on these machines. Thank you! However, I still have a major problem, and I sure hope you can help! This is a 6hp Tecumseh on a Ariens snowblower. I rebuilt the original Tecumseh carb (it had the fixed non-adjustable jets) with your help. I even found the old Tecumseh manual pages and set the float height according to their spec (Plastic float, not broken or leaking). But it kept wanting to drip fuel out of the carb inlet, when I could get it to run (which was maybe half the time). And it quit running a lot and backfired when it didn’t want to run, just like before the carb rebuild. I found a new Tecumseh carb for this model (I verified the engine model/carb part number) on eBay, for $40. Now it is on the engine, and all it wants to do when I crank it is spit out pulses of air/fuel mix from the carb inlet, and backfire poppity-pop-pop. When I stop cranking, that’s it. Nothing. I have a fire extinguisher handy, because I wouldn’t be surprised to have it catch fire while I crank it! I started with the main jet 1 1/2 turns out and the idle jet 1 1/4 turns, as you show in this video. I then went in from there 1/4 turn on each screw… until I got to 1/2 turn out on the main jet and 1/4 turn out on the idle jet. Same result: Spitting air and fuel mist pulses out of the carb inlet, and backfiring! Questions: Is this thing somehow cranking in reverse rotation? I doubt it, because I even used the recoil pull-starter… same result. Can these things jump time? Is that what’s happened to my engine? I hope not. I hope this is something simple!! Please help!!! Thank you!

@Jellybean Junction Hey thanks man! Next steps: 1. Check compression (easy), 2. Pop the valve cover and check valve clearances (not too difficult)… I hope to avoid (3.) having to look at ghe flywheel, key, etc, which sounds a bit more involved… But… it’s July, so plenty of time before I need this machine.

Thank you very much for posting this video. I have a 1995 Troy Bilt with a Tecumseh engine. Which I haven't done much to it except change the oil the belts once and the spark plug and cutting edge once. Every spring I run it until it runs out before storage. The first time today of all times it would not fire up. I pulled the plug and it was fouled with fuel. So I figured the float was stuck and needed a little tickle. I did as you posted in the video. I turned the float adjustment in all the way out 1 1/2 turns out. Gave it a yank and she fired off on the first pull. I did a final adjustment and she is running like a champ. Of course the weathermen were wrong again. Suppose to picked up 2-4 inches and presently we have a foot and it's still snowing.

Hi Donyboy73, First, thank you for taking the time to film these videos. All the shops here in New England are backed-up for three weeks or more, with more snow on the way, so I’m trying to maintain my Toro snowblower with a Tecumseh HMSK80 the best I can. I just installed one of those $18 replacement carburetors from China. The blower is running better with the new adjustable carb, however it is leaking gas from the fuel adjustment screw. I’m having to use my fuel shut-off and then dump the bowl as a work around for the problem. Ideas on how I could fix the leak would be appreciate. Thank you.
