We often argue about religion, but how are our arguments resolved? In this video, Pulitzer-prize winning author Jack Miles discusses three common ways in which arguments are typically resolved and proposes a fourth way to argue about religion and never lose-and to do so without abandoning our beliefs and convictions.
Jack Miles is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of English and Religious Studies at the University of California, Irvine. His book 𝘎𝘰𝘥: 𝘈 𝘉𝘪𝘰𝘨𝘳𝘢𝘱𝘩𝘺 won a Pulitzer Prize in 1996.

I like Jack Miles. He seems like a nice and sweet man. Overall, this video was amazing to watch and I really hope we can end this "I'm right, you're wrong!" debate peacefully so we can live harmoniously as one big happy family, my dear Christian and Jewish cousins. ☪💖✝💖✡

I love this gentleman's wise words. But as a Muslim, I believe the truth is provable and will always prevail. These stalemates imply that *both* sides are either wrong or right and that's simply not true. Overall, these are agnostic arguments. I don't advise waiting for too long either. None of us knows how long we have on this earth.

I like and agree on this argument! Nevertheless it doesn't means to stop calling others to what you believe God's only way and leave it to the listener to work his mind and agree or not. Finally God will judge who is right and who is wrong.

I think that the American method was able to make a monster and an enemy because of ignoring knowledge through direct dialogue. It is clear that the absence of peaceful dialogue has left many peoples victims of negative incitement through media that exploited the listener's lack of knowledge.... The fifth method is not arguing for victory, but rather a discussion to learn about a culture that actually exists.

Nope it is not about either win or lose, it is about whose actions are emanating the light of truth or black clouds of deception. We are living in end times, where we both are seekers. We seek the light to enter our hearts.

Ok let's unpack this because there are several logical holes. 1. Quran 5:48 is usually interpreted as you follow the rules of the community you are in at the time. My home my rules situation. This would end the argument. 2. Judaism, or more accurately phariseeism as a philosophy, was struck down multiple times in the Old testament by God and Moses, sic. Korach, and Moses's last speech where he forbids teaching Torah are the 2 most notable. 3. Protestantism, also stuck down in Old and New Testament. The most popular being Mathew 12:25 with Jesus saying A house devided cannot stand. As clear as it can be, forbids protest "denominations" from existing. 4. That leaves the 24 Catholic communities and the clergy handles their disagreements. Granted this only works with actual religiously literate people. I'm my experience nothing can stop fools and the ignorant from yelling at each other, but that's not a true argument.

Jesus was Muslim 1. Jesus teaches Monotheism; the Oneness of Allah. (Mark:12:29). 2. Jesus believed he was a Messenger of Allah. (John, 17:3, John,7:28, John, 8:42). 3. Jesus surrendered his will to Allah. (Mark, 3:31-35, Matthew:7:21). 4. Jesus was circumcised. (Luke, 2:21). 5. Jesus never ate pork. He despised pork. (Leviticus,11: 7). 6. Jesus denied Trinity same as Muslims do. (John:17:3). 7. Jesus had a beard and dressed modestly like Muslims. 8. Jesus performed ablution before prayer like all orthodox Jews do. Moses and Aaron and his sons used to wash their hands and feet. (Exodus, 40:31, John, 13:10). 9. Jesus believed only Allah has the knowledge of unseen. (Mark, 11:12-13, and 13:32). 10. Jesus worshiped Allah with his face on ground as Muslims do. (Matthew, 26:39). 11. Jesus used the greetings of peace and taught his disciples to greet each other (as he do). (Luke, 10:5, John, 20:19). 12. Jesus followed the LAW and forbade interest. (Exodus, 22:25). 13. Jesus fasted for more than a month. (Matthew, 4:1-2). 14. Jesus did not worship or wear the cursed cross. 15. Jesus never got drunk. 16. Jesus preached Jihad. (Luke, 22:35-36, Matthew,10:32-34). 17. Jesus taught Salvation comes from submitting your will to Allah, Fath and good deeds same as Muslims do. (Matthew:7:21-23). 18. Jesus believed Miracles were from Allah. (John, 5:30, Acts, 2:22). 19. Jesus predicted he will survive the alleged crucifixion as as Muslims belief. (Matthew:12:40). 20. Jesus did not believe in Redemption by his Blood. (Matthew:5:17-20).

This man is referencing the Quran to us, yet so many of us are still arguing. There is no argument with the Quran - and there shouldn't be. If you are Muslim and want to argue with a man quoting the Quran, then question your desire to fight and the way that your hubris may mislead you.

Indeed, We gave Moses the Book and sent after him successive messengers. And We gave Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs and supported him with the holy spirit. Why is it that every time a messenger comes to you ˹Israelites˺ with something you do not like, you become arrogant, rejecting some and killing others? [Surah Al-Baqarah; 2:87]

I like your attitude towards deescalation. But unfortunately you left out a crucial group of people. As an atheist, it is impossible for me to take that position. Best I can do is to agree to disagree. I firmly believe there is no afterlife, there is no judgement day. If there is a creator (or creation mechanism) then it has absolutely no interest in puny human issues. I even feel offended by the narative of the Quran, that I will end up in hell (It is repeated over and over and over again). So in order to show good will, I can only tolerate religious people. I still think I am right.

Only one can be right though. Truth demands exclusivity and so do all of the religions. Each one says you must belong to that religion to make it to heaven. I don’t agree with just putting up with a religion such as Islam because while the followers are very loving and kind people, the Quran and Muhammad teach that it’s ok to oppresses women, commands followers to kill those who do not believe in Allah. This is not in self defense either as people claim. You cannot name one thing that ISIS does that is not from the Quran and hadiths. They are the “real” Muslims. All the loving and kind ones are not because the Quran says if you are friends with disbelievers, even if they are your family, you are cut off from Allah and become like one of them, the disbelievers. If you leave Islam, the penalty is death. If someone read this comment, my life could be at risk but it’s peaceful? No. It’s quite opposite and I can give you all the references and context. But again, Muslim people usually are better than their prophet and God which is good and we can’t be upset with them but the religion itself is very violent and full of hate and so was Muhammad

The only problem is this leaves the matter unsettled and people doomed for eternity. We must vie to show that Muhammad was a false prophet and hopefully show people the way forward with Jesus as Lord.
