If you're worried about being bored when you retire in Mexico, stop worrying right now. Kat and I talk about our nonprofit activities this week.
Kat is on the board of Baja Dogs Sterililzations and they are planning a fundraiser April 10th. You can purchase tickets on their website or make a donation here on KZbin. I'm hoping to raise $150 by April 10th - enough to sterilize 10 dogs.
I've been busy making videos for the nonprofit Sea Watch. The videos are mostly for local Mexicans to help them learn about the state of the sea and what they can do to help it.
Check out Sea Watch: www.seawatch.org/

I am starting work with the La Paz rotary club. There are so many local children who do not get to go to school because their parents can’t afford the fees, and cost of a uniform, shoes and school supplies. It’s a tragic situation which keeps the poor oppressed. There is so much we can do to help, and hopefully every child will eventually have the advantage of an education. Something we take for granted in the US and other countries.

I recently learned that kids in small towns might not have shoes, and the shoes are necessary to be allowed in the school. Such simple things that we don't know anything about. I'm going to reach out to yuo about Rotary.

Great efforts on your part. I am a long time trail runner. We started a trail running group and a trail race. In addition to getting people active, we are building a beautiful trail system. This year, we'll hold the Third Annual Bahia Asuncion 5k Fun and 10k Trail Championships. Last year, we were able to donate 5000 pesos to the girls softball team, install two benches on the trails, feed all the runners, give them medals, offer prize money, along with other offerings for an entry fee of 200 pesos. It's so cool to see how many people have started walking and running. This year, Baja Bound Insurance is going to sponsor us. We appreciate any and all donations🎉

I commend you both. You are obviously both better than I. Really. I mostly just stand by in the background while Pam works her trivia night for the local hospital and nursing home. Our surrounding towns come out to a local pub and help with this cause. Pam's also on the board of directors for a group (80 thou plus) that look after retired teachers benefits. While I do help out basiclly I'm just the security and the "pretty face". lol 😆 Both sound like something WE could get behind you with. (If we ever get there) You 2 are both good people helping out .👍👍👍 P n D

OK deal. Last year I told Flash I'd stand with him and help clean and sterilize the instruments. But if you'd rather I guess we could all stand around and be the drunk gringo's. Likely not a good sight at a clinic. @@AlmostRetiredinMexico

we worked @DogPrana sterilization clinic here in El Pescadero earlier this month. It was awesome, dogs and cat...they are already fundraising for the next clinic. We saw more 99 (cats&dogs)...such a cool environment and a way to give back to the local community. glad to hear you are doing even more. I agree, a lot of folks do balk when the 'great white hope' shows up and tries to run the show....when it's our job to take a back seat and support the local communities. We also try and fundraise for the bomberos (fire depts/emt) as well as sterilization clinics and vet care

I absolutely love this video! Seeing the ways you two are giving back to your community is heartwarming. Thank you. I've been a vet tech volunteer for the Todos Santos spay and neuter clinic. It has been a phenomenal effort that has practically reversed the homeless dog population in Todos. I love hearing that this effort is also happening in La Paz! I'd love to support/volunteer with Baja Dogs Sterilazations in La Paz in the future. Yes--definitely keep us posted about Sea Watch! I've heard they are doing very important work and will want to support their efforts as well when it's appropriate. Until then, we'll donate to BDS and take buckets to the beaches/mtns for trash cleanup. Muchas gracias por tu ayuda!

Love you guys and all you do! My husband (who is a climate scientist) and I are not sure yet where we’ll end up-still exploring-but we definitely want to give back, as you two and others do. While I think San Miguel is too gringo-ified for my tastes I will say the expats have done a great job helping out with sterilization campaigns there. I know a woman who runs a cat sanctuary there and I also know a Canadian who does sterilization work in Oaxaca-I make those contacts whenever I go to Mexico to see where we might fit in. Love the ocean work too-so important. It’s hard sometimes to keep the sadness at bay (sorry, bad pun) but one has to keep working on these projects and give back. Next month I am heading to Michoacán and while the monarch season will be mostly over by then I think, I am eager to see the reserves and what people are doing there to help out. Thanks for all you do! I hope to have neighbors like you someday!

Best of luck in finding your perfect future home. Did you know the favored presidential candidate is a climate scientist? I can't imagine Mexico ever being boring. How is Mexico boring? The USA is very boring unless you're in Wyoming or something.
@AlmostRetiredinMexico
@AlmostRetiredinMexico 9 күн бұрын
It all depends on the person. I know one woman who just left La Paz because she was bored. She was an older woman, her husband had died and she wasn't really a social person. Her most social activity was pickleball, but she could only do that 6-8 hours per week. She moved back to the US to be near family and grand kids. I wanted her to do a video, but she's a very shy person.

@@AlmostRetiredinMexico She had family in USA. That's not the same as being bored. If she had no family in USA maybe she would have preferred Mexico. That's what it sounds like to me but who knows. It's normal to want to be where family is.

@boilingfrogs9993 - great question. I don't know of anyone monitoring that in Mexico. However I just read an article about the success in parts of the US. And how some people are talking about backing off of spay/neuter to make sure the supply of pets meets demand. Currently, the demand for pets in areas like the Pacific Northwest is met by bringing dogs from Mexico, Texas, etc.
