Let’s take a look at the two main failure points of these engines, where there is little coming back from it once it’s happened, and discuss some preventative measures.

May I add that another cause of white coolant spots is overfilling the expansion tank. On a cold engine, the coolant should be barely visible and sitting at the very bottom of the tank. Upon heating up the coolant rises or "expands" to the top of the expansion tank. That is what it is for. Some people fill it right to the top and the coolant has nowhere to expand therefore it finds different spots to leak out of unnecessarily, and folk starts getting paranoid. Only fill the expansion tank so it sits at the very bottom of the tank and never fill to the top.
@MTechGuy
@MTechGuy 2 жыл бұрын
The expansion tank has a level indication float, but once it reaches max fill it stops moving. Yes, if it’s filled beyond the max mark it can cause the tank cap to pressure relive, but in a lot of cases it can cause the expansion tank to split too

Love my m54. Great video you certainly know what you’re talking about, first person to say the gasket is usually not the issue and it’s the head bolts. Many people think it will be easy head gasket replace , then when they go to pull the bolts they notice the absolute lack of torque or shorn female threads in the block. These are great engines truly, just surrounded by a pretty unreliable cooling system. Luckily very easy to replace

We used to drill and tap a little hole right next to the oil pump nut, effectively locking it in place with a little hex screw and of course oil resistant loctite and in combination with a s54 oilpump chain tensioner kit you're way more freely to Rev the engine higher because the chain harmonics are damped and don't kill the axle or make the nut come loose

I'm not certain if it's related but my 03 330xi m54 threw a few codes but I drove it anyway. There's four a p0505, p1619, p0030, p0102. I got in it this morning and now the car will only rev once and then totally ignores the gas pedal, doesn't rev at all. I'm entirely at my wits end with it. Could it be in limp mode? No new codes also.

100% on the cooling components, was so paranoid I did water-pump, thermostat, expansion tank, upper/lower hoses, temp senosr, coolant level sensor, and fan blade lol ! Always read that the oilpump nut issue mostly affected cars that constantly sustained + 6000 rpm (eg tracked cars), and was only an issue on m54b30 (harmonics unique to it). And on top of that the only real solution was the OEM Motorsport oil-pump (ridiculously priced😫). You should be safe if you aren't constantly tearing the streets up, I didn't stress about it myself 👍🏽 Great vid!

So true, I had a rad hose blow when the car was idling in my driveway. Left the car for 25 minutes. Left it for so long because car hadn't driven in a while so thought I would charge the battery. It did overheat. Not sure of the outcome yet as the car hasn't been driven much. Feeling really dumb.

Used to have a 02 330xi 5 speed man. Although I did find myself replacing gaskets and hoses etc all over the engine all the time, the engine itself to me was reliable and strong. I got 157k miles on that engine before taking a careless spirited drive one day and thew my excessivly sloppy shifter into third by accident, bending the valves. Since then upgraded to a g20 330imsport., its a welcoming upgrade.

Interesting.... I have a 2003 e39 530i , i love it to bits. Is the oil pump nut issue an issue in general on the M54 engine? or is it usually associated with higher millage and frequently driving the motor hard / at high revs that causes this to fail? Please correct me if I’m wrong, aren’t you supposed to heat red loctite to remove the bolt you’ve put it on? And if so, do engine temperatures get close enough to the heat needed to relieve the red loctite?

I’ve never had an issuer removing bolts cold that were installed with red loctite, this nut is so skinny that cold removal wouldn’t be an issue. Red loctite is good for temps beyond M54 engine operating temps

On the verdge of selling my bmw x5 e53 3.0i (m54 engine I believe) a customer road tested my vehicle and suddenly oil started leaking. Its as if pressure from the engine caused it to leak. strangely, I started to noticed I had oil inside the expansion tank. Isit true that there are no oil coolers in this engine? & possible that the gearbox cooler failed to cause the mix? Worse case the cylinder head which im not hoping because the vehicle was ready to be sold! - Any thoughts would be much appreciated as im thinking to keep this vehicle now.

These M54 engines can leak from various places (valve cover gasket, oil pan, VANOS hose, oil filter housing, power steering lines) Oil in coolant is either trans cooler mixing, or if the engine had recently been overheated it could be the head gasket

When you check the actual dipstick, is the level ok? Is the problem you’re describing, the yellow oil warning, and does it happen on startup and then turn off soon after? Please explain how in the world, by aluminum block can lower the torque on bolts when overheated? Ok, u did, but still, I'm sorry but that is not possible whatsoever, that bolt will only deform under 1000s of degrees. If you have worked on bmw cars, and I'm sure that You have, for example suspension component which are aluminum.....heating aluminum to remove the bolts does not work, to be honest based on my numerous experiences, I have noticed that it might even increase the torque, but I'm not making the statement a fact. But, the reason why head gaskets fail on M54 motors is misdiagnosis. I have personally have purchased at least 4 vehicle that I can only recall at this moment with "blown head gasket" and every single one of them had faulty Thermostat. Only way I can see head gasket fail on those engines is running it with zero coolant in it for.......I'd say an hour. And the reason why gasket will fail is due to it deteriorating under high heat.
@MTechGuy
@MTechGuy 7 ай бұрын
Most common cause of overheating for these engines is failure of a component of the cooling system. Can cause head gasket to give out if driven overheated, in some cases the threads for the head bolts (the threads in the block) can soften and proper head torque will be compromised, even helicoiling won’t last in some cases. No only is it possible, there are many M54 engines out there that this has happened to
