500$ for a complex animation? Jazza I just got paid 1000$ for an 8 second animated logo, which was commissioned by a very nice producer I got to know recently, which I personally still believe is a fair price. (Just to show how much your rates are grounded and realistic) I think your prices are as decent as they can get for the kick ass quality you provide. Great video my man!

Yeah my cost-estimator page is kind of low on the estimate side, I'm clear to let people know it's a very rough estimate, once someone sends in a request I get in contact for more details so I can provide a proper quote. Sometimes it ends up more, sometimes less, it's all negotiable, but based on the job and work involved.

1. Anyone that can offer real exposure can also afford to pay you. Doing official concept art for Disney would be amazing exposure because they're so huge and famous. They also definitely have the money to pay you. Tumblr can get you way more exposure than the cheap nobodies that want free art. I feel like the only situation where you'd accept exposure as your payment is if Alan Moore went completely bankrupt and wanted you to do the art for his project. 2. If someone wants free art and tries to justify it by saying it would be "a great portfolio piece," remind them that you are completely capable of coming up with your own prompts.
@fruitels93107 жыл бұрын
A different thing though is if someone gives you an idea ( perhaps asks if you could draw it for them, but not in a demanding way ) and you really like it.^^ Usually if I have the time and want to draw it I will, but I'll go after what _I_ want to draw with that idea in mind ( change it after my preferations ) and then credit that person who gave me the idea for it ( the idea, not the art ).
@fanaticaH7 жыл бұрын
Fruitels That's basically asking for prompts to draw and that's valid, although some artists don't like it because they feel forced to draw popular prompts in the comments (either a prompt that was repeated a lot or one that got a lot of likes and positive responses). I think that's why some artists ask for small donations before placing a prompt. That's a cheap alternative for people who can't commission something and they just want their favorite artist to draw a character they like without personal or commercial use.

True, although, sometimes it does help to build connections by taking offers for low or free prices. I won't do it with someone who's a complete dick though, It has to be someone who's like devent, otherwise I'll ask to be paid. Reason being, I have been trying to build connections in the industry due to most of my projects being fan-sequels and fan-prequels that I eventually hope to get a license for.

That freelance calculator is brillant, I believe I will add that to my own portfolio! I can't even count the number of times people have ordered a face portait (simple and quick) and then they wanted full body, and then maybe their cat, oh and they want to ride their bicycle with their mom and they would like this to take place on Manhattan. That calculator seems like a simple way to explain to people beforehand that such additions cost more money.

Thoughts from an educated slacker: Start by practicing giving a professional treatment to your personal work. That means adopting a formalized workflow with defined stages, and treat it as a job where the client just happens to be you. Go through a round of thumbnails and rough sketches to make sure you know what you want in the final piece, then commit to it, and put in a day's work before "checking in with the client". Maybe keep a journal to practice articulating your communication between artist and client. Also, log the time you spend on each phase of the work. That data will allow you to figure out a general formula for estimating pricing and deadlines.

Oh lord that happens so often, i am a total newbie on digital art but im a kinda good botanical (scientific) ilustrator when using ink, at first i was like amazed that i could earn money by "just" drawing plants, so i worked for quite a low price at first, because my reasoning was, well, if really really talented artists on the internet can earn like 60 bucks per drawing then i should aim kinda lower shouldnt i? I'm not as talented. Yeah.... problem is, first, scientific illustration consumes a damn heavy load of time more than traditional art, since you have to be absurdly precise (the goal is information afterall), second, 60 bucks in dolars is way more valuable than in my country's coin, and third, scientific ilustrators are hard to come by, if artists are already kinda rare, ones who also have scientific background are even more scarce. So yeah, in the end i had like a week worth of work, with a very specialized skill, producing a lot of acurate drawings and got paid what with all the conversion would be like... 100 dolars or such... For my employee it was like, well free pretty much. No one works for 400/month its suicide, specially for a very specialized job. So thats a very hard thing to do, value yourself, because we often compare to the ones in the top, and there's so much very talented people on deviant and other platforms that we shy ourselves from our talent, but you know, deviant is made of people from the WHOLE WORLD. Who else do you personally know that can do what you can? How many people can produce the results that you can? thats your value. I could compate myself with jazza and think im not good enough because he is amazing, but jazza is an australian freelancer artist, and im a brazilian scientific ilustrator, what good would it make for me? NEVER shy away from valuing yourself, think how many people you know cant draw more than a stick figure, your work matters, and if it matters, it has a price. (sorry for butchering english a bit, im typing fast)

Most people trained in biology can't draw... If they can, they would be artists, not doing research... So I guess that's why scientific illustrators are rare

I have had this "I want it for free" stuff going for many years now. I started charging money about a year ago, but the people always seem to get so angry with me when I tell them I want some money for it. I even had this girl go off on me because she claimed to have drawn an elephant butt using only one pencil. I tried to explain to her that a real portrait includes the usage of multiple pencils, but she just kept going off on me and tried to make me drop the price even more to five euros (I'm Belgian :3) while for students I'd charge between 15-25 euros, which is super cheap for a portrait (adults are being charged between 50 - 65 euros) I started doing this because people always asked me to draw stuff for them and they loved my art. This artist I once went to and my mom told me I should stop doing it for free and charge some money. Guess what... all of a sudden nobody wanted my artworks anymore and I sucked according to them. I got this massive insecurity about my art and stopped for quite some time. I don't know if I was doing something wrong? I mean I have the right to ask for money if what I do is good, right?

I have recently subscribed to your channel and everything you say just reaffirms what I have been saying and doing all along! This particular video reflects EXACT:Y the scenarios that I have experienced over the years. I tell my family "You want my services as an artist, you pay for it." (they do get a family discount) And to make things worse, I live in an area that believes EVERYTHING should be done for free if it is a service. Your blue chip rules are the foundation to a good relationship with a client, as well as just a great way to keep your clients coming back for more. Bottom line is I enjoy your videos due to the quality, clarity, and informative content. Thanks for inspiring artists whether they be new or seasoned in the craft.

I think one of the tricky parts is we bid against ourselves. All of us artists contribute to the factors involved and drive down the overall value of each other's work. Clients want to get what they want for the least. If art is valued lowly in our society, it is because we, as artists value our service low.
@fidgetyrock44209 жыл бұрын

MrPisster its tough because you want to get clients but if you're not cheaper than your competitors they might as well go to those people so its harsh because we are kinda competing against each other to get work because god knows how damn near impossible to get work in the professional setting
@unematrix9 жыл бұрын
MrPisster it is supply & demand which determines the price.
@MrPisster9 жыл бұрын
unematrix Blind bidding separates supply and demand, that's why clients like it. The bidders don't know how many bid or at what cost the client is getting, so they don't have any sense of the market.
@unematrix9 жыл бұрын
MrPisster so? if supply increases they can just make a lot of bids until they get the cheapest artist to make what they want. not knowing how much others pay for something is not relevent, it's simply a case of finding the cheapest alternative.

I occasionally hear other artists telling me about people they met(or others have) wants something(artworks usually) for free. Some of them goes about 'exposure' or 'experience' fishing like you mentioned earlier in the video, but some are like this: "Draw me a portrait of my girlfriend for free because it's our anniversary(or some sort)." So when artist asks about the payment, like you expected, they want them for free because the artist love to make artworks, so they have to do even if there's no reward or pay. Especially when their "FANS" asks. The artist refuses to work, then they just rant about how artist lost his/her purity, passion and so on. they even claim that the they're ignored because the famous artist doesn't even care about normal(?) people like them. I don't know how many people like these are there, but I can assume these kind of actions are not only rude, but even moronic maybe. Thank you for the videos anyway. :)

Very good and realistic advice! I totally agree :-) What I myself have tried concerning hourly wages when working for private customers/friends (mostly for small projects) is: get the same hourly wage the customer/friend does in his/her job (+ some extra for materials and social insurance). If somebody earns a lot of money himself/herself he/she can pay more. If somebody has only a minimal wage, you can come up with a fair and cheap solution. It's maybe an unusual approach, but it helps to explain to people, what my own work is worth in comparison to theirs.

Hi Jazza! Thanks for this excellent tutorial video! Currently I work as an employee in a company, but I've been working as a freelancer too... The problem is that I think my clients (and people in general) don't take me serious at all... As you say: they want great/fast works... almost for FREE! I'd had problems with some of them, and lost contact with others... Due to that, I've been thinking on quit, too many times... But the truth is that I like what I do as a freelancer, and do want to move forward to that direction in the future (in a short time, if possible :P), 'cause I'd like to be my own boss and enjoy doing what I like the most... But well, now I will start applying all your advises... I really think they will help me! Thanks again! Have a good one!

man this video is old but I need some advice. I accepted this job to create 50 3d digital models right? well I gave him a time frame of a few hours to a week for each which is what I have been able to do. But now I am back with my friends to distract me, I am not letting parents helping me out with money so I have a non art job to pay the rent and basically I just think I took on a bigger project than I can fit into my schedule and promised too much. Now I chose to work for little money on this project for various reasons and we both want great quality because this is what I love but man I haven't been sleeping which leads to me being distracted easier and not being able to see the models in my head which is leading to longer and longer time frames for these models. Plus all the complications I didn't foresee of the models and the back and forth with critiques with the client making each model taking even longer. If I make 4 per month then I stick to my time frame technically but I am just stressed out. Every day I am thinking "welp is today the day he tells me he has given half the project to someone else or tells me he wants someone else to do it." We are doing the project in parts so technically he can ditch me after every 4 models. Sometimes he sounds like "hey man take your time, there aint no rush, this is just for my hobby" and sometimes its like "hey are you working? you are taking a while with these? are you sure you can do it?" Got any advice for this kind of situation? The video helped and I've watched it many times before but I just feel boxed in and I am doing everything to show the client like there is nothing wrong.

The reason I ask is in the event the client decides to drop the entire project but has a hold of one of the update screenshots you provided and finds someone else they know to finish your piece. I know you could always take legal action, but for a starting freelancer that would cost more would it not?

Although I have been an "artist" all my life, I have only recently gotten into the digital animation scene, I am very serious about what I do, and am very critical (my wife says over critical) of my work. Okay! I found this info in this video invaluable, and I want to give a big thank you for it. I have been approached lots of times to add animation to music, dubstep etc. I have resisted, as either it's never been clear who is actually requesting the work, or I have questioned the ethics of the ideas and demands for certain types of animation that have been requested. Judging by the advice you have offered I am sure now, that although I am still struggling to achieve any sort of "fame," I was correct in turning down offers as the potential "freebie" provided by myself was not going to be in my long term interest.

A couple of years ago, the administrator finally got it and said, "what she is thinking is that she needs to be paid." I moved my folded arms just for a moment to point at my nose.

Contracts and ask for a down payment up front. The down payment is to make sure they are serious about it. Also, in the contract make sure to outline what you're going to do, and what you're not going to do. I use to do web design. I am not the greatest writer and one of my first sites I didn't get a contract but when we discussed it I made it clear that I do not come up with the content for the website that it would be their responsibility. Of course, when I went to college I found out that web designers do write the content. At any rate, it will save you a lot of headache to just put it in the contract so when they bring it up you can refer to the contract. Also, make it clear that once they've approved the final design that no changes can be made without a fee. I had someone make me change pretty much everything cause they didn't like it after I was finished, even after they seen how the layout was in the final draft.

I’m Glad I’m not a graphic designer and freelancer but the thing is . People also tell artists like me how to paint and they tell people don’t do this or that or tell people make it perfect and they shut you didn’t and they want your art free or for $10- $20. I’ve seen artist still just starting after me like some are kids make videos saying his to draw this or paint this , they say do’s or don’t , and it’s wrong . As a artist that’s born with a disability for 28 years trying to make a name for myself, I think doing things god you want it is better than being told what to do . Heck I don’t go to classes and college for art because they just want money and shut people down and they tell you what to do . There not nice . Van Gogh says there is no rule in art and there is no perfect art . Everyone in the world needs to Listen to what I say and understand things . Teach your self . Go back To paintings that’s classic like Van Gogh , margret Keene and Picasso and even you make it a little pop but make it classic what it use to be and understand why they paint how they want it and never listion to others . That’s what I do . If you watch how I’ve started painting on my KZbin channel and watch all my videos and my art and understand why I did this or that and how it’s all true about everything and even read my discription you’ll understand. My art not a brand and nothing really to do with money because I don’t like that but want to make a name for my self. 13:42

When I was around 15 and really good at digital art at the time, like no one else that I knew could even attempt to do it, but obviously I wasn't even close to being amazing as other older artists at the time (in 2002-2004), but it impressed all my friends and family and just people I met. And NOBODY wanted to pay me - it wasn't even an idea that crossed my mind or anybody's mind, I guess because I was 15 I didn't deserve to be a professional (in my mind and theirs), everyone was like "oh can you draw me and this and that" blah blah, and I said yeah I would do it... but I never did lol. I would make up excuses like "oh my computer isn't working etc", or enough time went on and they would forget. I just didn't want to draw other people or things I didn't care for, it was a hobby at the time and I just really wanted to spend my time doing what I wanted to draw...plus it takes me forever to make something because I suck at being a human lol, I can't do anything fast enough even non-art things, except washing dishes and cleaning haha!

I am learning that I am probably drastically undercharging for my time... I do pixel art, and animating that stuff takes a looot longer than you'd expect. Im glad I saw this video and a few others all saying the same thing.

Post everywhere, get your name out there... And post often and regular... I have a DA, twitter, Instagram, FB, Patreon... Im working on stores, hope to do KZbin videos... And I can really see my following growing and gaining attention on each site with daily updates. This is what will lead to me getting jobs and commissions. It starts somewhere.

Anyone have any tips on advertising my work to people who are willing to pay. I'm a 14 year old trying to get into freelance work to get some extra cash but my biggest problem is that I can never get any jobs because I often find myself around people who aren't willing to pay for art. Even when I try to negotiate I often end up droppping it because they want to pay me nothing or very close to nothing (even considereing the extremely cheap prices on my work already.) Anyone know of any websites where I can advertise myself and be somewhat likely to get a little work? Or even on convincing people to pay me? Thanks :D

ShinySwordStorm A few people here mentioned Deviant art. There are lots of professional artists there. The have rates up on their pages. There are a few artist group websites. Google a few of them and perhaps they can also get you started. I dont sell my art, but if I did, I would just find my favorite artists and also people around my artistic level and then see where they sell. A few artists I know of have twitter, facebook and instagram diedicated to their art and they enter free and cheap entrance fee contests. One photographer I know of got recognition for doing photos of the avnegers and Robert Downey Jr. got wind of it and re-tweeted. KZbin channels are also great. I didnt see any repsonse to your question, but hopefully, that can get you started. Jazza can probably give a better answer.

I'm still un-decided on what I want to be when I'm older. An animator or a Comic Artist. I do know that I want to be a freelancer though. I'm new to drawing (One year) and I need a lot more practice but what you said is so true. I always get, "Can you do me?" "Do you want an art trade?" Or things similar to that. I don't mind Art trades as such but most people do them half heatedly and don't put ANY effort into their part which is so annoying when I put hours into mine -_- And sometimes I'll do requests when I'm bored. I don't accept commissions yet but when I do how much should I charge? I don't want to over price but I don't want to under price because I know that's not good for the other artists out there.
