For those who find it difficult to extract information from laid back conversations, this is a structured summary: - Godliness in women looks differently than godliness in men. Women usually help by merciful caring. Men usually help by intolerance towards evil. - How to develop our masculinity? 1. Self consciously study, read and lean towards most of what is taught at church by example, precept and sermons. 2. We learn by imitating. Look out for a man you respect enough to be around and learn from him. 3. Read biographies of men who conquered cities, climbed mountains, went out exploring, etc. Read them looking for elements in their extraordinary life that you can replicate in your ordinary life. - What is masculinity? "The glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility". - You can be a good man even if you shiver at doing some right things (like Moses did multiple times). You don't necessarily have to be courageous (like David) all the time. As long as you do what's right in the end, you'll be fine.

Thanks for the summary, but I cannot help to think that if you replace men with women in the above summary (and obvious male dominated exploits with obvious female ones), then it would equally apply to femininity. Hmmm, the history of the Christian church has examples of with for both men and women. "What is masculinity "The glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility"." This definition of masculinity is terrible - it also applies to women who sacrifice themselves as well. So why do you think Godliness looks different in girls and boys? Allow that some girls may also have an adventurous side (some may be "wild at heart" and that's okay). I know a few adrenaline junkies who are ER doctors or in the military doing what they were born to do. I also know plenty of women who are not strong in "mercy" but rather pretty mighty on "justice". We undermine the complexity of human life when we create simplistic dividing lines by gender.

Men who go to work every day, pay their bills, save their money, pay their property off, pay their tax, knelt and pray for their salvation, use Godly wisdom, fix the car, fix their house, help with the cooking, laundry, shopping, cleaning the toilet, mopping, weeding, picking up the dog mess, trash cans out, yard work, dump day, painting the house, setting the Godly example through digesting the word of God, applying all of their talents, keeping quiet and mercy hidden in my heart, and sleeping like a baby at night. Is my example of a Godly man. My grandma always said, “I rather see a sermon then hear one.”

Why pigeon hole anyone into a role that does not fit their personality, skills, and talents? @@manager0175 Masculinity and femininity are observable identifiable traits. That does not mean anyone fits perfectly into one pigeonhole or the other. Both men and women possess a mixture of masculine traits and feminine traits. Some men lean more toward the feminine traits. And some women lean more toward the masculine traits. But we are all a mix. In general, most men naturally possess more of the masculine traits. And in general, most women naturally possess more of the feminine traits. That's what makes these traits observable throughout time and across cultures as masculine or feminine. I would say there's not just one right way to be a man or a woman. But masculinity and femininity are what they are. I don't know if that made any sense or not. I'm terrible at explaining things.

It seems like the church favors feminine qualities over the masculine ones, which in turn has confused and emasculated a tone of men in the process. God help me. God help us all.

While overall I agree, there are a lot of different kinds of ways masculinity can present its self, even when growing. Both the quiet and orderly and the rowdy rambunctious type need to be recognized and understood. Masclinity is about construction, providence, protection, and production, even if its quiet or violent.

Your definition of Masculinity rings true to me on a gut level, and could on it's face explain why Jordan Peterson's message of "Take personal responsibility for improving the world by getting your act together and finding the heaviest thing you can lift and carrying it up hill towards the City of God." draws a 75% male audience, but upon reflection (or over thinking?) I'm not at all sure how gladly assuming sacrificial responsibility is not exactly what mothers and wives are called to do caring for their families. Granted the Apostles Peter and Paul make it abundantly clear that the Man is to be the Head and thus bear more authority and responsibility under God than the wife, but looking at Proverbs 31 the husband clearly delegates substantial authority over and responsibility for the home and children to the wife, and she gladly meets those responsibilities through sacrificial giving of her time and labor. I hate the farce of "egalitarianism" in the Church today so I would love it if one sentence definitions of masculinity or femininity could very clearly delineate the difference in quintessence between the two, but I'm not sure the above is it. Can you help me here?

My midlife prices for myself in this area is ask God help me have the characteristics of a man that are godly, ask God for friends who are masculine, and study Proverbs for the verses relating to strong men trying to practice those.

The story of Gideon in Judges chapter 6 is the best example of a fearful man who was obedient to God and God did great things. Here is a man who was hiding getting his food and God calls him a man of valor. The first thing God sent them to do was to take care of his home. In the battle God told him to stand his ground. Any men of valor reading this, go tear down the idols in your home before taking on the world! And when you take a drink of water, be aware of your surroundings. Now go read Judges 6

Good masculine and feminine traits are on a scale. Men and women have both in varying degrees. Standing against evil, helping others, protecting, nurturing etc. It's not so black and white since there are several types of individuals that God created. One may be a doctor, another a teacher, another a soldier, another a repairman. It's hard to define something when you don't acknowledge it's complexities. The servant leadership thing gets warped into a doormat thing just like the role of homemaker. (God through Jesus is the human manifestation of a servant leader and he could end all of us for eternity if he really wanted to so it's not weakness.) Doing anything solely for mans approval will get you into trouble. You have to have a value system driving your behavior. God first. I believe masculinity is the spirit men were given and it manifests differently in each individual when he stays true to it.

I’m 19 (I will be 20 in August of this year), and I want to be married at some point, but I’m totally blind, and not totally confident in the technology, and I think it might be a of the unknown and I’m getting frustrated and trying to learn. It’s just easier. how am I supposed to be a masculine man and when I don’t know how to do everything that most cited men can do? Would I have to become a follower in a marriage, or at least equal to a potential wife? This is an angle I think more people should consider. This includes swimming up stream which takes a lot of physical, mental and spiritual strength. It's just disappointing to me that he promotes things that cause so many Christian brothers to stumble. I believe many people let him get away with things that are so obviously wrong because of his intellect. But as long as he continues to promote whiskey in Christian videos, I will continue to voice my concern because I do not believe it is a lost cause. Spurgeon smoked cigars for years before the Lord convicted him that it was wrong and I am hoping that a similar conviction will take place in this situation.

@Ryan Clement this is something I struggled with for a long time, in and outside of the Church there are ideas that are tossed around quite often. Over time, I found that being a man isn't really something to "attain" but to first see and recognize that we have the ability to become. This becoming is not about what we have or not have, i.e. spouse or a job. Yet taking our God-given human nature qualities and using them to better the world around us through him. Part of that experience is how they show in the masculine and feminine ways God is bestowed upon us.

As a mother of two sons. I can attest to this. The best thing mothers can do for their sons. Is to make room for destructive behavior. When they Display aggression I don’t tell them to stop I tell them where and when they are allowed to do it. If it’s physical usually I’ll throw them outside. And I allow them to box each other, Play with fire, take things apart, use tools, climb trees etc. they play contact sports as well. In regards to verbal aggression. I also make room. I don’t tell them not to argue, but rather I teach them the rules of a good debate. And when they crudely insult each other in a spirit of fun. I understand that this is a unique feature of brotherly love. Of course there are times when their father or I need to correct them. But this is fairly rare because They are perfectly capable of behaving indoors and when they need to. Another important thing to note for mothers of boys is that it’s important they learn to interact with women and girls differently. They don’t physically wrestle me in any way. They speak to me with respect even when they disagree. And they treat their little sister similarly. She enjoys some rough play with them but it’s to her comfort level. And although they do tease her it’s much gentler and another dynamic entirely.

Those things are all godly qualities, but not specifically masculine qualities. Good women can and should have those qualities. Good men should be those things, but unlike women good men must also be leaders with drive and energy. Good men must be meek in the sense that they bear great power but use it will wise self-control. Good men must be willing and able to live out their headship over women which God has ordained to them with wisdom and charity.

The opening question is over the top, sorry. Don’t act like the boys who are polite and kind and following are somehow not what God wants from them. That is not sinful. The historic church has always prayed to live quiet godly lives. Not everyone is a leader of men and we shouldn’t put more on people than God is calling us to do.

Just like the disciples weren't all the same. There may be a slight distortion between being masculine and the notion of different personalities. Paul appeared weak in person, for instance, as opposed to John and Peter who were probably visibly strong, physically dominant, and personally domineering.

With respect, i think that in order for these ideas to be conveyed to men who are out of touch with what it means to be a man, you have to say it in some kind of a stirring way. You have to give contrast and ruffle some feathers. I agree that there are good men who are quiet and godly, but I think those men must still know the characteristics godly masculinity well.

I don't fully agree with masculinity = the glad assumption of sacrificial responsibility. It doesn't seem to capture the entirety of God's command to Adam to rule the earth and subdue it. It also lacks clarity regarding who the man is responsible to, which is a critical flaw in today's idolatrous world.

He stood out in every area of his cultures concept. He was a compassionate, assertive, leader, antagonist, servant.

More like they’re being judged solely off the fruits and not the other calls to be honorable, fight for goodness, protector actions that women aren’t inclined to biologically as boys where as the fruit of the spirit comes easier to a nurturing gender. He explains this pretty reasonably.

One must remember that Paul's admonitions to reflect the Christians virtues is mostly a call to MEN. Unless he's specifically saying "women do x" it's for men, because men were expected to internalize these lessons and teach their families (boys and girls and wife). Yes it comes easier to girls. Sin comes easier than not sinning too, coming easier doesn't make it any less important for men.

The nonfiction literature of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn is a good place to start, beginning with the Gulag Archipelago unabridged. From Under the Rubble by the same author is a good follow up. Reading the biographies of great military men, successful generals and other national heroes, the Founding Fathers of the nation and a few Enlightenment classics by the likes of Francis Bacon, Montiesque, and later thinkers like Kierkegaard. When the time comes the follower of Christ will need to be as skilled and agile of thought as with the body. As for learning to fight, definitely. Learning a striking art and a grappling art is a bare minimum for a man to be able to protect himself and his loved ones. Boxing, Muay Thai, Freestyle Wrestling and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu are among the highest value fighting styles out there. Krav Maga, Sambo, MMA and Judo are all equally good in the right context.

If this topic is really important to this channel, I'd encourage them to NOT do these philosophical drive-bys. They are really not helpful because of their brevity. Doug has a tendency towards metaphor which leads him off into tangents and initial lack of specificity. I almost dismissed this video just because of the title and the little graphic; however, I decided I'd give it a listen. Richard Fox Of course, manhood and womanhood are constructs, but that's not the starting point. Take a gander at Genesis 1:27 and read it in context, especially the part where it says, "male and female He created them." Your X-Y chromosomal structure isn't a construct. It's built into you and every other man. Men are called to be men. You answer that calling by acknowledging and repenting of your sin and then living in the culture while not being of the culture. God gives men lots of leeway in enacting their masculinity. Just survey the Bible. Paul and David are very different guys. But He also puts limits on masculinity. You can rule out the playboy and the cross-dresser, both of whom are godless. Biology constitutes the calling; family and culture are where we live it out. You would be well advised to put your critical theory beliefs under the Biblical microscope.

I still don't think the biographies bit is good advice, it sounds cliché and something straight out of almost any other channel presuming to help men. For most of antiquity ambition and self-serving actions were seen as gross, base, and distasteful yet it seems to be encouraged in this advice. I think context is everything here, are cities being conquered because its morally right? Is there a reason for the exploring and physical feats? Consider the contrast of this advice to something written by Blaise Pascal "Thus she [the soul of a Christian] perceives that she should adore God as a creature [the human/soul is the creature], render thanks to him as a debtor, satisfy him as a criminal, and pray to him as one poor and needy." A stark contrast to mimicking people who are 'great' by human standards - seems something like Augustine's Confessions might be a more worthwhile read. This particular piece of advice of Wilson's always sticks out as a red flag and seems, to me at least, in stark contrast to the overarching mandates that have been so helpful to me in scripture: "...what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.", "Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man" and " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.' "
