I never understood why people care so much about what other people DON’T eat. No one bats and eye when you tell them you’re allergic to gluten or other types of foods. No one would think twice if you told them you have high blood pressure and have to stay away from salt, but when people find out you’re vegan, all of a sudden there’s an issue. Personally, I don’t think they have a problem with you being vegan, I think they’re grappling with themselves on why they’re not.🙄

I advised her i don't eat animal flesh, she then states that she'll make egg salad for everyone. I love her dearly, but... I told her I'll bring my own food. Liz Verde: That is - EXACTLY - the problem with having people prepare food for you. Even when they mean well, many still do not seem to understand that fish, turkey, eggs, milk, and pork are all animal products. Many do not understand the concept of cross-contamination, either. Part of this can be attributed to other “vegans/vegetarians”, though - namely the “lacto-ovo-pesco-pollo-porcus-bovine vegans!” They’re the folks who say that they are vegan or vegetarian, but then eat one or some of the aforementioned products. So, if Susie knows that Bill is a veggie, and Bill eats turkey - since you are a veggie, then you must also eat turkey.

A very long time ago the actress Anne Heche said it was hilarious that you found people much more accepting of her lesbianism than her veganism. I guess because most people figure you're not going to try to convince them to be gay, but they're afraid that you might try to convince them to be vegan. I don't know, but I'll never forget that she felt that it was strange how people reacted.

Great tips, Rose. I've handled so many social situations as a vegan and things are only a big deal if you make them a big deal. I've attended 5 weddings as a vegan so far and I've brought my own food to two of them and no one even batted an eye. I'm always super grateful when people think of me and my food restrictions but I don't expect them to. I always bring a dish to share when I go parties or friends' houses for dinner and I don't think anyone has been offended. At holidays I do most of the cooking and then I get to control at least part of the menu.

I have more issues with food allergies so i'm already asking people what's in food items because of that rather than being vegan. You do feel like you're a pain in the ass but bringing your own stuff is definitely helpful. On the topic of dealing with friends and family with a negative view/response of veganism: I have lunch with the "family" most Sundays, and when I was newly vegan I got a lot of negative push back from the person who normally cooks the meals. Over time, coming to lunch prepared to make my own version of that week's meal if the supplies are provided, and being polite about it and not expecting them to help or eat what I'm eating, it's become a lot easier for everyone involved. The usual chef is far calmer and more accepting of it, and I think it's because I gave them the time to adjust while being polite, respectful, and grateful of them providing supplies for me to make a meal. Now, it's mostly a non-issue. I don't expect anyone to convert or anything (though one person is more open than the others because of how aware they are of the environmental issues associated with animal products) but it's become an easy thing to go to a meal I used to be afraid of being rejected at. As long as you're polite, respectful, patient, and willing to put a little more work into making your own meals, I'd say most people will easily come to accept it over time. In any case, being vegan is a choice I'm glad I made, and I think my certainty around my choice makes it easier for others to just accept that this isn't a phase they can change or influence.

I made you this pasta dish/cornbread/blahblahblah" and after she looks at the box, there is either lard or whey or something the family member didn't even realize was an animal product. It wouldn't be too much of a problem, but she's been vegetarian for so long that she'll get really sick if she eats it.

i love these! very spot on and informational. im not a vegan yet, but transitioning to! im currently a flexitarian, i only eat food with animal products when I'm outside, in some other people's house, with family or have no option. 😊 it's kinda difficult to go all the way vegan in PH especially when you're not in a province lol. but i just enjoy the process. we're going there! 😊

about birthday cakes - i feel that if it's your family member's birthday, i expected that they'd want you to feel more included and make or order a vegan cake instead of omnivorous, since omnivores can enjoy vegan cakes too (and you can make vegan version of their favorite cake), it's only vegans that cannot enjoy omnivorous cakes i felt excluded when i found out that my family don't want to make or order a vegan cake when our omnivorous members have birthdays, and then they make the face "oww she can't eat the cake" or straight up say some hahaha jokes, or they will ignore me altogether like i'm not even part of the family or i'm invisible

Be confident. People respond to confidence. I remember when I started working in customer service I was super nervous. A month later, I learned to sound confident even if I still barely had any idea on WTF I was doing. But I said it with such confidence people thought I had worked there for 20 years and were complimenting me on how knowledgeable I sounded. XD Thankfully, I've done plenty of research to debunk the most typical claims against veganism. The only ones that throw me for a loop are just really out of left field BS and then I have go research it. Which is fine because then I have new ammo. :D My friends and family also know I don't take any BS. I'm very lucky to have friends and family who accept my choices because I originally started going plant-based for health reasons. Since they love me, they don't want me to die. So they had a year of getting used to the idea that I was reducing my animal product intake anyway so going vegan wasn't that big of a switch for me or them. Besides, I wouldn't have friends that gave me crap about being vegan anyway. If they did, they wouldn't be my friend.

Thank you for the ethical answer. I bring people delicious food to show how thankful I am for the help they give me. Now I have people asked me to show them how to cook whatever food I have cooked for them. Makes me happy that I've taught them how to a vegan meal. One less animal meal cooked times however many people show up to learn.✌💪🌱💙

I am again transitioning into predominantly raw vegan and gluten free. This is not only an environmental humane love the earth decision but a mental and physical decision as well. I don't blurt out my decisions or why. I bring food to share so I can participate at meals and stay true to my self and my bodies spiritual and physical needs. As you said I don't scream about my choices of diet. I bring my own food to share. However people get angry say my food choices are crazy..they can't see how I can be involved in a meal. They stop inviting me over for eating socially. Like you said I say no thank you to things and point out a fabulous dish I've brought. I get anger disgust and you'll not be invited in the future.

I guess I just don't care what other people think. I make my own decisions and I'm not influenced by what other people think. When I go to a gathering where there will be a lot of food I bring stuff....I share it if anyone is interested. They don't need to know it's vegan. I don't sweat it. I agree with another poster. If they trash you for what you eat...it's on them...not you.

Bless you Rose for being so balanced and funny and real and a non-zealot. From time-to-time I stumble onto other vegan channels (you know the ones) and there is so much judgement with an almost evangelical crusade against other points of view. As you say, an ethical (and/or health) choice. Too much hating which I never get with you. Just lots of joy in eating great, delicious food. Having said that, I have been a vegan for most of my life I still get people (namely brothers-in-law) waving plates of meat in my face saying 'want some'. Shrug.

I love your attitude of not telling people unless it's needed. Cause there is this joke about some one running to the curb as your drive buy screaming and waving his arms, thinking it's an emergency, you pull over and out of breath they explain what is going on..."I, I, just wanted to say....I, I'm vegan!" Lol ;-)

When I first became vegan my family got super butthurt over it. It wasn't the biggest issue since I didn't have to rely on them for food but on father's day, my dad chose to go to a "chicken wing" place that literally had nothing for me on the menu and my mom was pissed because I didn't eat anything

My manager at work (Starbucks) always feels bad that we don't have much I can eat or in situations when food is given to our staff I can't eat it. I've realized it's probably for the best because it's a lot easier for me to decline the offer of food that I probably shouldn't be eating in the first place!

I was at a party yesterday and my sweet great aunt innocently asked me “why would you want to be vegan when meat is so delicious?” And I told her “well, maybe it was easier for me because I love the animals” and she said “you can love the animals and eat meat too” and I just smiled back at her because I didn’t want to argue with her. She’s really a very nice lady, she just didn’t understand why I would deprive myself of something she thinks is “delicious” and it was clear to me that her comment wasn’t meant to be debated, it was just her way of justifying her own actions to herself. I feel that she loves animals too and hasn’t come to terms with what eating meat really is. What is your advice for a situation like that? What would you have done? I didn’t want to make things awkward so I just smiled at her and said nothing.

I work in a club and started taking my baking into work for the staff obviously vegan. If 1 week I don't take any goodies there like where's the cakes. I didn't take anything last week and they kept going in my picnic hamper looking for the goodies. I don't have a lunch box I'm a vegan bodybuilder so I eat a lot so a picnic hamper is my lunch box ( and I work 12hr shifts)
