Inês Moura hahah. Totally!!!! We can find options even at a steak house. It’s just a matter of being uninformed..... haha. This reminds me.... I had a party at my house and people were telling me they would have dinner elsewhere before stopping my house haha. Then they showed up and were stunned by how many vegan food options I had and how actually tasty it was. They apologized for being stupid 😆

I work pt at a restaurant chain that has VERY few vegan options... Without being tweaked.😑 The rest of the servers always come to get me when they have a table with someone that's vegan/vegetarian. I'm ALWAYS more than happy to assist them with building a healthy, filling, BEAUTIFUL plate. I attempt to do it without letting the cooks know that they're vegan. I just make notes as if they have a food allergy.😂 Then I make them a pretty plate of fruit for dessert. 🤗 I don't eat there, but I'm well aware of the options(or lack thereof), and don't want people to feel excluded.❤ HOWEVER IF my sis and I go to a non-vegan restaurant, we check the menu beforehand, and we're ALWAYS kind. It seems that someone with us generally says something about us being vegan, but we don't say anything. Just order our food and continue enjoying life. 😁

i can so relate to other people telling a waiter “she’s a vegan” I don’t want to tell i’m a vegan because i fear kitchen staff may slip some animal products into my dish, so i just order side dishes or ask if this and that can be removed and i think that saying you’re allergic is safer than saying you’re vegan, but then you miss the chance to educate a waiter what vegan is (assuming they don’t know, as it happens so often) but then you shouldn’t need to, they should know this stuff if they work around food

I just wanted to comment on the issue of feeling isolated. I know that being vegan is not my identity, but it is just really frustrating if you don't know anyone else who cares about those things. I would love to have someone to talk to that I can relate to when it comes to the values that I have as a vegan. For me at least, being vegan has changed the way I look at many things and it can be isolating if people just don't get you when it comes to that.
@CheapLazyVegan

I get what you're saying. I think you can an effort to meet like minded people either through a local community or online. But I also think for your own mental health and wellbeing, isolating yourself from society isn't good in the long run. We need to learn to live within our society and maybe even learn to compartmentalize our feelings about animal products and welfare sometimes. Plus, this is a good way to influence the opinions of other non vegans!
@therobin980
@therobin980 5 жыл бұрын
@@CheapLazyVegan thanks for responding :) I didn't mean that I'm isolating myself, it just can feel like you're isolated in certain situations. It's hard to get so many negative resonses from people for being vegan, it would help having someone I could relate to just to balance it out, especially since I haven't been vegan for a super long time. It's probably easier to deal with that when you are more confident about it. Many people probably feel that way. But you're right, at least there is always social media xD I definitely agree with you on the rest. I think it's very important to be a good example for veganism and to show other people that you can be just a normal person and happen to be vegan

I never tried to change my parent's opinion on the subject of eating meat, they on the other hand keep trying to change mine and throwing comments at me about my alimentation. It's tiresome sometimes, however they LOVE when I make vegan pastries. The most acceptings are my colleagues. When they bring things at work for celebration now, they add a few fruits for me. It's getting more and more popular and I find it great. I think we went to about all the restaurants around our office together at one point or another just due to their curiosity in how I can eat vegan and still go out like they do. It's quite fun :) and the restaurants are more and more used to people asking dishes without meat, fish, egg or dairy, so it gets easier every time where I live. :)

OMG PREACH!!!! I'm so happy someone else shares my feelings about not being "ULTRA PURE VEGAN" when going out to eat..or even when eating at family or friends houses...I explain to people that while I don't purchase or eat animal products, I am not going to ask about the recipe list for every item I might want to order at a restaurant. I am not going to make a fuss if there is a teaspoon of butter in something.... being excessively difficult gives others the opening to then make fun of you for being vegan and gives them the leverage to poke holes in your "why" and lord over you their "why" they are NOT vegan... I love this video series. You just have to live your best life and not let the negativity get to you.

If I were invited to a restaurant I would check their menu online if possible and if there's vegan options I would order that. I'm not vegan, but I am trying to be plant based. My boyfriend wants to eat more meat than me. So, in a convesation who had, we realised that 2-3 times the week we would eat out or have a take-out. In fact, even in a non-vegan diet, you shouldn't consume meat more than those 2-3 times a week. So, now we practicly cook meat like once a week or not at all and we just eat meat when ordering food. I suppose that some of you vegans could make such an arrangement, if you are in a similar situation, with the non-vegan people you live with so that everyone is happy. Just a tip that might work for some. :)

Another thing I do that is not very vegan but I think is better! Is that I often buy USED/THRIFTED leather, wool etc clothes and shoes and bags...because #1 reduce reuse....#2 it’s already purchased and dead, use it up well #3 leather shoes and bags LAST! They last..I’m much more interested overall in not supporting plastic shoes that get thrown in a landfill every 6 months just because they are vegan...until better product scome out and I have more money to support the Mat and Natts of the world (and I had one of their bags 10 years ago it also wore down fast...)

I think your outlook is great. I’m very similar myself with very few vegan friends and non in my immediate circle. I have had quite a few people say to me , oh, you don’t seem like a vegan 😂 when I asked how so, they usually say because I don’t look malnourished and I’m not crazy. I don’t obviously think that about vegans but it’s nice to show people that that stereotype isn’t the case. I am on a low sodium and low purine eating plan and primarily plant based. I’ve learned to check the menu and select a couple of items and then check nutrition. I’ll sometimes ask the wait staff a couple of questions if I need clarification. Many times, I end up with a naked baked potato and a salad...and that’s fine with me. Rose, I love your common sense approach to this. I hope others listen to this and learn to be happy with their choices as well as others. You are awesome and a great advocate for selecting a healthy lifestyle! 🙂👍

It’s interesting because often times I go to omni restaurants for family gatherings and I know that a lot of them use chicken broth or beef broth in their dishes by default, so I often find myself torn. I wonder if I am harming animals more by eating broth made from their flesh and bones or by making vegans come across as picky and potentially making people less likely to go vegan. But I feel like in the grand scheme of things, eating chicken broth or butter in a vegetable dish will not impact animals to a significant extent and it’s more important to present our community in a positive light

(Acknowledging this is a two-month-old comment) If it helps at all, broth is made from the bones and things left over from butchering an animal - the extras that would otherwise have been thrown out. If you're ethically against eating animals then that's still an upsetting thing to think about, but I think of it as "The animal was already killed for its meat, this is just making sure the rest of it doesn't go to waste." An animal didn't die *just* for broth, though the broth wouldn't exist if animals hadn't died either. It's probably an ethics vs. environment thing. I'm reducing my animal product consumption for environmental and health reasons rather than ethical reasons, so to me (as an example) broth made from the leftovers of a Thanksgiving turkey my mother was going to roast whether I ate it or not is a way of making good use of something rather than disposing of it. Does that make sense?

I tend to go to certain places which I know are more friendly, and my friends and family know these places. I do review menus online or call to ask if they can make vegan food for me. I like going to places where I have more than a salad to eat. At some places like Dennys I get dry english muffin, avocado, peanut butter and fruit, perfect. As you say, kindness is always the best option, and being kind does not mean you don't tell the truth. I have some friends who are more omni than others so they are better with sharing a vegan pizza with or something that would be too much food for me to eat alone. I am not shy, and will kindly ask the wait person to check on things, like a soup or bun, and I send them with the question and a test to see if they can find anything that will work. I do tip well for every time I have to send them back. Remember, the restaurant wants you to eat there, so ask for what you want. Yeah, they may not have the brand you like, just leave it off. And yes, I have had people say, "well she is a vegan." and I add, "and so much more!" But I am a Wiccan and had people say, "this is Susan, she is a Wiccan." That is so much more involved of a conversation. And as a human we are test subjects. I, through an elimination diet, found I can't eat nightshades anymore, potato, peppers, tomato, eggplant. That is actually really hard, but even in Mexico recently the staff was very accommodating. I ate a lot of avocado and papaya, yum.

Good tips here! As a culinarian, at restaurants I tend to break the food I'm inquiring about into parts to make it easier on the waitstaff asking the questions. So, recently, at an Italian place, I asked whether there was broth, animal fat, or cheese in the pizza sauce, and whether there were dairy or eggs in the dough[the sauce was vegan but the dough had whey powder], which gave the waitress only two ingredients to ask about. TFP!

I like what you said about the difference between how you are in the grocery store & how you act in a public & social setting. I try to maintain pretty strict vegan standards at home, and grocery shopping takes forever bcz I read every label in the place. When I'm going to a restaurant, I try to look at their menu ahead of time, online if possible, and at least confirm that they have some vegetarian options and that their idea of vegetarian matches mine. There's a take out restaurant near me that lists, under vegetarian dishes, items that they advise are made with pork or chicken (not as an optional addition ~ how is that veggie?) Anyway, I have struck upon what is the ideal go-to for me when there's nothing vegan/vegetarian on the menu. I always order a toasted tomato sandwich. I love tomato sandwiches, and never needed mayo on them anyway. Almost every restaurant will have the ingredients to make it, and it's a no fuss no muss way to get around the 20 questions game of "what's in this dish anyway". When I'm in a friend's home I don't ask. I just accept and eat what is offered. All my friends know I don't eat meat & they try hard to accommodate me, which I appreciate, so if they offer me a brownie, I'm not going to quiz them about how it was made, I'm going to say thank you, and just enjoy it.

Super helpful information and really well put. I love the part about not worrying about micro-ingredients at restaurants. I live in Korea where a lot of food has fish sauce, or possibly other unknown micro-ingredients. If I am out and want to enjoy Korean food with friends, then I have to accept that sometimes. And I've noticed that one good Korean friend seems to be going towards vegan (he is pre-diabetes). I hope I am being a good example that way.

I have friends that jump in and say oh she’s a vegan while I am ordering food and sometimes it has made things harder than it needs to be because the waitress will be like this is not vegan friendly just because it has some micro ingredient that isn’t vegan, while I personally just try to take the easier way by simply removing simple ingredients like cheese, egg, sauces with dairy etc. If I was to care about every single micro ingredient that goes into the food then it would make things so restrictive to the point where nobody would want to eat out with me or even take my order 😂 So yes you are so right when you said it’s about navigating through life without hurting animals! Also I don’t want to paint that negative image of vegans being super stuck up and crazy to my non vegan friends and relatives. Thank you for this video! You really hit the hammer on the head with this one ❤️😂

The social vegan eating struggle is real in Australia, country towns usually only have 1 pub and everything else is shut around dinner time and i can't survive on a bowl of chips until breakfast :( if they even have a token vegetarian meal, it's usually a quiche with egg and dairy. Luckily I don't mind eating fish if I have to and the rest of the meal is usually vegan, salad bar items are usually drenched in mayo though. One time I asked to remove ham from a pasta sauce but they said they couldn't because the sauce was premade, so I would always check in advance if items are removable if you have the opportunity

Tbh, I did watch a youtube channel once where their entire identity ended up seeming to be about veganism, it became like a brand and almost like their channel was an advertisement, for me I thought it was cool to watch their channel, as a vegan family living their life but I felt the channel became too commercialized and I don't watch anymore. It did have that "i am a vegan and it transformed my life" vibe and I just find that personally odd, almost as if they were selling veganism as a cure all and it made me uncomfortable, imo. For me personally, veganism is just one aspect of social justice and many issues we face, so I am a bit turned off by the hyper veganism, and kind of ignoring other issues. Vegan or nothing is just not the only way to better the world imo.

By the way, that could just have been their channel, not a real depiction of their life I get that, but the vibe was not for me anyway.

I agree, being vegan is not me, nor do I think about it as a lifestyle, although I am not sure what I classify it as, I don't think of being vegetarian as a diet, so why would I think of veganism that way, so I'm not sure sure how I should classify it?

Here in Ireland all the allergens are listed and numbered and every dish on the menu has the numbers of the allergens contained in that dish. It is so easy to see "hidden" meat or dairy in a restaurant meal here (Thanks to EU rules; they made at least one thing easier lol) Allergens include shellfish, eggs, milk, etc so you can see a meal that could be vegan by removing one or two items for example.

I got this new job this year, and there was a work outing last month, and I asked some of my coworkers who went last year about the sort of foods offered, and the only response I really got was hot dogs and chips.... I was gettting ready to go and bringing my best friend ( another vegan) and we packed granola bars and all sorts of snacks. We got there and there was so much food, there were hot dogs and pulled pork and other omnivore foods, but then we noticed there was watermelon and pickle spears (which we LOVE) and there were options with the chips that we could eat, like lays originals. Then I looked at the menu board. VEGGIE burgers. I asked a member of the catering staff because I didn't see them out and then she told me that they kept them in the back because they wanted to reserve them for the people who actually wanted them, instead of omni's grabbing them mindlessly. We made sure they were vegan and then we had questions about the buns, that same catering lady (sweet old woman, very grandma-esque) went to go find the bags the buns came in and they didn't have nutritional facts on them, so she suggested not to eat them, just in case. We nodded and went to go eat, and about 5 minutes later, SHE CAME TO OUR TABLE, just to tell us that she CALLED their supplier to make sure about the ingredients, just to make sure for us. I almost cried lmao. They of course werent vegan and she went on to tell me how her grand daughter is vegan and she knows the struggle all too well. I love that old lady and I hope for more like her in the world c:

My old job ALWAYS asked me what veggie burgers to get for the vegans/vegetarians. EVERYONE isn't so accommodating, so I'm happy they were. We had ethical vegans, non-ethical vegans, vegetarians, pescetarians, and non-beef/pork eaters for religion. I was happy to be the go-to food finder for us all. 😂

When I go to a restaurant, I order something that only needs one thing taken off for it to be vegan. So if a pasta dish has some cheese sprinkled on top then I'll just ask for no cheese. If it's a bean burger with mayo then I'll ask for no mayo. I don't worry about how the food is cooked because I have no control over that. For example, if I order a bean breakfast taco and I can taste it was toasted in butter, I'm not going to ask them to make it again without the butter. That's just being a pain. That's just the risk whenever you go out to eat. I don't try to control anyone's choices. I educate them and let them make their own decisions. If they want to make the worst decision then I can't stop them. So far I've gotten a few of my friends to go vegan after sharing with them a little book I wrote on all the reasons why they should go vegan. I'll be sharing it with my family soon in hopes they can turn their health around. If they read it and say, "Whatever, don't care." then I won't push it.

I ask a lot of questions about my food, however I always call/message the restaurant before-hand so they have time to reply! If the restaurant is a surprise I'll ask simple questions about fryers (I have a dairy allergy so I can't order fries if they cook mozza sticks in the same oil) and simple ingredient inquiries, but I don't get down to the nitty gritty of everything like I've seen others do. I don't want to be THAT vegan.

I definitely go out to eat less since going vegan but I've never been to a restaurant where there wasn't at least something I could eat. I always look at menus ahead of time and politely ask the server questions about ingredients. It's really not a big deal and none of my friends give me a hard time. I think a lot of people in this comment thread need to get some nicer friends!

I think a lot of it has to do with culture and where you live. I am from The United States of America and grew up in the Pacific Northwest, where veganism is fairly common and almost all resturants are accomidating. But, I currently live in the Deep South, where even vegetables are cooked up in meat juices and/or butter, so it is much more difficult to eat out. And my friends here just don't get it, they're the type of people who believe that "a meal has to have a meat component in it, otherwise it isn't really a meal".

Most restaurants are very accommodating as long as you are nice about it. My husband and I went to Applebee's for a date and after staring at the menu for a long time I realized that every single thing wasn't even vegan . I explained to our waiter that I don't eat animals and he went to talk to the General Manager of the restaurant. Wow! To my surprise the GM came to our table squat down to kneel so that he could talk to us on our level. He actually created something specifically for us that made us very comfortable.

Thanks for sharing, that showed that other vegans can be cool around food as well 😅 I'm that kind of a person that would eat vegan 100% whenever I can BUT when there is no other option I would eat something that might contain dairy or eggs and not make a big deal about it. I feel like people sometimes want to be a vegan police on the internet and that actually make other people believe vegans are crazy 😥

So My boyfriend is 100% meat eater lol. But he has been so supportive thru my Journey and he has tried all my vegan recipes even my Korean rice cakes. That one he was up in the air about. He isn't big on spice. But people ask me was I gonna stay with him, because he won't turn to a Vegan lifestyle. I was rendered speechless. Love doesn't or at least should not have limits or conditions. I just make sides and usually he cooks the yulky meat lol. But like tonight I cooked for him. All my sides are Vegan and sometimes he doesn't even know it, so my daughter went Vegan 2 ish years ago. I refused to cook 2 kinds of everything, so him and my boys have been eating Vegan mashed potatoes and veg for over 2 years. It's easy to slide in Vegan anything these days. I will say I made Vegan collard greens and he asked what happen to the neck bones lmao. I had to tell him neck bones came from a cow so it was off the menu for me, we just giggled about it. He is a huge fan of the beyond burger. I Love being Vegan and cooking Vegan food for my non Vegan friends and family.

spot on! Unfortunately, most vegans don't have a solid background in communication and it would help the movement so much. I try my best to have the mindset of a meat-eater in mind so I can relate. If we can't relate, we're isolating ourselves and that's not going to help anyone.

I feel like you didn't answer the question at 5:40 and just rambled. Some people just want other vegans or vegan friends to have people to relate to, talk to, rant to ABOUT VEGANISM. When you have absolutely no one except strangers online about veganism, it is still very isolating. Just because our entire personality isn't veganism itself doesn't negate the fact that a lot of us feel lonely not knowing other vegans or being able to talk about animals with people.
