I went vegan overnight and have been vegan ever since (3.5 years). It's true, it WAS an impulsive decision but it's one I don't regret. That being said, it isn't the approach I recommend to people when they ask - I do let them know that transitioning slowly is still a great thing!

Emily Griese amen. My mother was completely against giving up pork and beef and in 5 years, now they are only cooked once or twice a month. We have meatless Monday’s and I will make something with a vegan meat to show them vegan meat is delicious. A staple for my mom is fat free regrows beans and rice with salsa that I call “goop” but it’s delicious. Taco Tuesday is usually meatless as well. My dad thought I was ridiculous for going through my vegan journey. Now when he goes to Taco Bell or subway, he will order stuff meatless for me.
@nursen21065 жыл бұрын
I think (or rather perceive), that most people have no problem accepting to reduce the consumption of meat (except when they or there families come from countries, that traditionally basically eat meat. a meal without any kind of meat seems to be incomplete or a sign of real poverty. they either shake their heads, are irritated or just lough it off. but other than that, I feel, reducing meat is rather 'ok' for many. esp. since there is the link to CO emissions.

I switched to more plant based and dropped dairy a few months back and there has definitely been an improvement with the previously mentioned issue, I am not fully vegan and still eating eggs from time to time, the issue being that I am a follower of high protein and low carb diet and learning about how to implement it while being more plant based, really glad I found your channel and your calm and common sense approach to veganism.

@Amelia De groot I would look up “vegan staples” for example there is a process where you can make “vegan cheese” (you can look it up) from pea protein milk and lemon juice! Then adding a few staples such as nutritional yeast(has a cheddar flavor) and boom you have some comfort vegan food that will help your cheese cravings. Other advice I’d have is saitan a meat replacement you can make at home it’s whole wheat gluten essentially and a great source of protein, like chicken! There are so many culinary options within veganism you will see a reference to tahini (main ingredient in hummas) and go down an internet rabbit hole of different ways to make various tahini dressings, and other ideas!

I loved meat too ! And cheese ! :) I'm vegan now. (And luckily I find very good vegan cheeses now in France where I live.) I did transition. But I started saying "I am vegan" only when my transition was almost finished. I agree with you about that subject (everyone cannot become vegan overnight). And, I am not perfect, too. :) I was afraid my family and friends would not support me at the beginning, that's why I did not tell them and used that time to educate myself about veganism, read blogs, join vegan groups on fb etc. It's been five years now (that I told everyone) but a lot of people I know still do not get it, you're so right ! One of my friends still tells me whenever she sees me that her sister-in-law has a farm where the cows are treated well... I'm lucky to live near a big city (Paris, France) because there are lots of vegan meetings, vegan stores, vegan restaurants etc. And finally, I'm not skinny, either. Going vegan did not make me skinny. I'm just "normal" I think. But....I get a little skinnier sometimes when I spend two weeks hiking (what a surprise !).

First topic truly speaks to me. I am in transition and have been for 3 years and will shame myself when sometimes I eat a poor animal that went through so much pain to be on my plate. I am actually on a similar journey that you went through. I have dairy or eggs 2% of the time, but seafood is a hard one to give up. I have the knowledge of seafood and especially the Pacific Ocean and Fukushima but my diet was mainly seafood my whole life so it’s the hardest one to give up. KZbin has been such an amazing community for support with veganism.

I did the same thing but a lot slower. Pescatarian for a year and vegetarian for 6 months. It took me 18 months all up. In the middle of this I had a baby, so I was extremely careful. I read about mistakes people make when transitioning their diet and lifestyle. I wanted it to be permanent so I took the time to inform myself properly about health and ethics. I replaced foods one by one and made sure they were at least nutritionally equivalent to animal based foods. It was amazing to discover that plant foods are highly nutritious and some even have nutrients that animal based foods do not. I also adopted new habits gradually. I committed myself to self education. Facebook groups and youtube were very helpful in my journey. In saying this I understand that one size doesn't fit all. Thanks for reading. :)

Your first point about transitioning not being shameful is great, and I love that you make a point to say you can still do the most you can even while consuming animal products. I genuinely don't understand why vegans can't make this point more of a focal point when promoting their message. I have my reasons for wanting to consume fewer animal products, but I have no interest in becoming a full time vegan. The ethical argument for veganism equates 'respect for life' with 'avoidance of death', which is absurd. It is really telling about the developed world's emotional avoidance of the inevitability of mortality. Death isn't cruelty--it's reality and it's unavoidable. Forcing a living thing to suffer while alive is cruelty. Vegans shoving their values down other people's throats is the equivalent of a door to door Jesus salesmen telling me I'm going to hell for not signing up for their cult. I feel like Rose has grown up a lot in that regards, and doesn't push a guilt agenda as much which is why she is my go-to vegan KZbinr. I support vegans, and respect that they can't stomach the idea of consuming animals. As for me, I'm doing my best to be an ethical omnivore--only consuming animal products that I know were ethically sourced without the animal suffering unnecessarily.These animal products are more expensive and hard to come by, so I'm always looking for plant based food options to reduce cost and increase convenience. To me, that's good enough. It doesn't HAVE to be as black and white as people make it. Just convincing a few people to reduce their animal product consumption can make a huge difference. Let's work together instead of fighting each other, y'all.
@marissas86645 жыл бұрын
About two years ago, I switched overnight because I'm the type of person that if I keep procrastinating or still have stuff around, I'll keep putting it off and making excuses to not do it, so while it perhaps was impulsive, I'm glad I did it, even though I wound up going back to animal products after a little over six months. However, after I started eating animal products again, it was different. I thought more about what I was eating, recognized that certain foods set heavier after eating them and I didn't digest it as well. I also just started feeling guiltier about it after I had gone plant-based for so long. The constant thinking and still following vegan pages on Facebook and things like that caused me to re-evaluate. I decided to give it another go, but this time, I transitioned. I eliminated red meat first, then pork, and chicken was the last meat to go. Cheese and sour cream were my biggest pitfalls, so cheese was the last dairy product to go. But transitioning helped so much this time. I've craved less of the animal products, but still craved cheese. I caved last week and had some of the cheese ravioli I used to love and when I had it, I was just like, "You know? This doesn't taste the way it used to. I don't like the way my stomach feels after and I just don't need it." I've also been trying to find simpler recipes to use this time around and your videos have been so helpful with that. I love your approach and how you use your platform to talk about veganism. I wish more had this mindset.

Labels really do have power, my brother is currently transitioning (slowly but surely), he started out as semi-vegetarian (cut out red meat + he never liked fish so that wasn't a problem) but his classmates didn't get the semi part so they assumed he didn't eat meat at all, so there's now this gossip around my bro that he's vegetarian/vegan XD which is convenient bc whenever food comes up as a topic for a school trip or event they try to prepare something for him or look for veggie options! :D Also, these gossips kinda pushed him to eat less and less meat bc people were always so shocked whenever he ate something that had poultry in it. Then I got him addicted to tofu which he now PREFERS to chicken lol. So now he only eats chicken when there's no tofu at home and our mom cooks and nags him to eat it, this happens less and less often bc he is always trying to find an excuse not to eat meat. He now identifies as a vegetarian and thankfully he didn't replace meat with eggs or dairy. He actually reduced his egg consumption a lot: he no longer eats stuff like scrambled eggs, boiled eggs, etc so foods that are just eggs or mainly eggs, but he doesn't refrain from eating cookies that contain eggs for example. Most of the animal products he consumes are dairy (but also less than before). "Fortunately" my family never could afford to buy cheese very often so even though he likes cheese he can't eat much of it XD But his favourite cheesy pizza is actually one at a local vegan restaurant (if you ever come to Debrecen Hungary, check out Kis Padlizsán! @kis_padlizsan on Instagram), he just told me today that it is the best pizza he's ever eaten - counting the non-vegan ones! :3 I sometimes take him to vegan events, like last time we went to Pride with a vegan group and he proudly held a 'vegans for equality' sign with me qwq My vegan friends didn't even question whether he was vegan bc he even made activist-y jokes XD I guess he learns a lot from the memes I spam him with lol

Thank you for being a realistic and reasonable vegan 🙌🏼 No need to denounce your vegan status if someone offers you a mint that has gelatin in it and you take it. Lol Have you read “Free Will” by Sam Harris? He dissects the idea of free will and how we don’t really have any control (we have the illusion of control, but we did not choose our genetics or our environment). It’s a short read and very interesting!

I just want to say that “you can’t change everyone” is really “you can’t change anyone instantly”. It’s important to help people encounter information they wouldn’t have otherwise encountered! I spent decades thinking that nothing was wrong with dairy just because cows don’t die when you milk them, somehow not realizing what happened to the babies or to the moms when they got “too old”, etc. And nobody corrected me or showed me the information. The first time I saw any information about dairy being bad it blew my mind when I actually thought about it, but that incubated in my brain for like two years before I really sought out more information and made an actual effort to stop buying dairy. What was that first bit of info I saw? It was literally just a Facebook meme making fun of vegetarians! But it did get me thinking, just really slowly lol. Over a year later I watched Earthlings but even then it had to incubate in my brain for a while before I broke the dairy habit. So if you think you didn’t change someone because you weren’t able to change them in a day or a week or even a year, don’t worry, sometimes people are SERIOUSLY SLOW AF but that doesn’t mean they won’t change or that they won’t keep thinking about what you told/showed them.

I am planning on working towards a vegan/plant based diet. I am going to admit for me its not so much the ethical side of it but more for the health benefits of it. I love your videos. They are fun and I love the energy you give. I have tried some of your recipes they are very good.

I went vegan overnight by impulse and then I did not know what to eat. I went to the the health good shop who guided me. But I made a lot of mistakes over the 2 years. There were language barrier in China town. Then there’s people at restaurants who think that as long as there no meat on the plate is vegan and think pork broth is vegan or lactose is not vegan but Caesin is. But I kept going and the mistakes becomes less and less. I dabled on junk food vegan and healthy vegan. must admit it would have been easier to transition and research before hand. Instead of researching along the way. I can see now that it was risky as I could have given up

Great video! I've been "transitioning" to a plant based diet for about two weeks now and this was really informative! I'm glad someone is taking about these things, because a lot of times "vegan" channels tend to make you feel like you're doing it wrong if you're not doing it like them... I've decided to transition for health reasons and I must say I've definitely felt a difference! Right now I'm eating at least one vegan and one vegetarian meal a day but I can tell when I've eaten too many animal foods. I'm starting to crave plant based foods and my body feels a whole lot better, it's kind of awesome! Learned how to make yummy tofu from you as well :) unfortunately I haven't been able to find a many different types here yet, just regular firm and smoked... Anyways, just wanted to let you know that you're very inspiring and keep up the great content!! 😘 Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 🤗

I'd been vegetarian from age 16 because I truly didn't really love meat and never enjoyed seafood. I had the herd mentality because it was cooked and around and you're a kid and eat what your parents give you because it's instinctual to trust them but growing up you become your own individual with thoughts and ideals that don't always align with your family. It was an easy, breezy 12 years of not eating meat but as I've grown more in my 20s I saw the implications of still using animal products even if I wasn't eating the animals themselves. Only went full vegan (or as you say, as vegan as I can be) recently but as it was from vegetarianism, it was nearly an overnight process for me and quite smooth. I see it as a way I can enjoy more foods that we have in abundance on this planet and always enjoy trying new things!

Great video! I also feel the same way with a lot of the things you pointed out, like homosexuality and shifting perception towards them. It's really nice that people are opening up and that even Veganism is indeed experiencing a shift too. People think that it's hard to go vegan overnight. It is for some, but if people feel compelled to try, I encourage them but tell them to forgive themselves if they make errors and step back if it's making them mentally tired. There are many ways to transition. What's important is that we don't get stuck. I personally went vegan almost within a month and people were saying that it is almost overnight considering I love meat. I just did what I felt and to do my best. Been vegan a year and seven months already...and it's not perfect, but I am proud of what I achieved. Also, non-vegans will always tell us that we're high carb even if we really not personally. I'm not high carb but my non-vegan friends can't get over at how much potatoes or rice I eat compared to when I wasn't vegan. 😅

I call myself a “whimpy vegan” because i eat mostly plant based but a few meals a week I eat meat and eggs. It’s not perfect but it’s what works for me and the biggest thing about a plant based lifestyle is encouraging people to try it. And I feel good about sharing my experience BECAUSE it’s not perfect!

I’m so lucky that my parents have always been accepting of my dietary decisions, I was vegetarian for 3 years when I was in elementary/middle school and my parents were extremely supportive but I basically got bullied into not being vegetarian when I was in 7th grade by other kids and I just wanted to be accepted so I went back to animal products. I’ve been vegetarian now for a really long time and am transitioning into veganism as much as I can and my dad has been so great bc he’s listened to dr McDougal’s radio interviews and even bought me supplements to make sure I get my b and d vitamins in :’) I know it’s not always possible to sway people, like rose said, but it’s good to try! And never get discouraged bc some people just don’t understand why or how they would even go about changing their diet but always keep going!

I was one of those people who went Vegan overnight. My main reason was because I was furious with the information I learned through the documentaries on Netflix and Earthlings. I’ve struggled with health problems, hospitalizations, drugs that made me gain weight, endless doctor’s appointments, and surgeries. So, it was very easy for me to switch overnight because I was fed up with being in pain. Within 4 days I felt like a normal human being and I will never go back. Never. My husband is also Vegan. He went Vegan with me, but he did have a few nonvegan foods, like donuts and things like that. Which is fine, because he doesn’t do that anymore. Lol.

I guess I technically went vegan overnight? The idea was in my mind, & then I read some books. I stocked up on what I would need, had a "last meal" and jumped in. I chose the date 1 month before my birthday the year I graduated college, so I would remember my anniversary my whole life. 8 years later & no regrets.

I was vegan about two years ago and abandoned it when my family no longer wanted to be vegan with me. During that two years as a non vegan, I envied those who were vegan. I felt like I was betraying my true self so I went vegan again, yes, overnight. However, I did all my research the first time around. This time I’m not going to advertise the issue. I will just quietly eat my veggies and not judge those who don’t.

I’ve been vegetarian for a few months and I’m working on cutting out animal products entirely, my family has trouble understanding my choices with the exception of my sister (she is vegetarian), my dad doesn’t know what to think and my mom constantly questions me. I found this diet to work for me because I’m fairly picky when it comes to animal products and processed foods, but I’ll eat almost any fruit, vegetable, or seed.

You have a wonderful attitude. I stopped watching more than one channel because they rant about people asking them questions. The jist being their viewers should watch every video they ever posted before bothering them. I also tune out fat shaming, carnivore shaming, basically any one spewing hate. If you want to get a message across you have to meet people where they're at. People don't listen when they're being beat over the head with the message. I appreciate you encouraging compassion. That can change the world.

My parents, when I told them about the fact that I wanted to be vegan, told me that I would be allowed to do that when I'll live on my own. I did it for a year in Germany and they noticed that I felt really good so they allowed me to continue it. Now it's been a year and half since I'm vegan. I really think that wherever people come from, they can change. I grew up in the north east of France where the main dish is potatoes, cancoillotte (a cheese) and sausage. My genitor is a hunter and he used to raise animals to eat them. I was 13 years old when I started to do my researches about veganism. I also have a friend who said that I helped her to be vegan whereas she just asked me a few questions about it and it was before I moved to Germany. In my opinion everyone can change as long as they take the time to do some researches about it and to try new things.

I was shockingly surprised over the reactions from people about ME going vegan. OMG, it was horrible. Eight years later, people aren’t quite as vocal or negative. I think they are more familiar with it than they were 8 years ago. Rather than give people a long explanation, when asked why I am a vegan, I simply say, “because I love animals and clean veins”. Lol. That usually stops the conversation but I notice that all eyes are on every bite of food I put into my mouth. God forbid if a piece of butter happens to be on my roll plate and bumps the bread.

This is a great video! This is an awesome starting point for my friends who reach out saying they're interested in going vegan. I went vegetarian in Feb 2014. I think I still ate fish for maybe another weeek, but I don't remember. I went vegan in the summer of 2015. I still ate honey a few weeks following. Now I eat entirely vegan after learning about all the sneaky things like confectioner's glaze haha. Plenty of people would like to tell me I'm not vegan for driving the car I do or feeding my cats a meat-based diet. Regardless, I've been a proud vegan for 4 years now. It's all about the animals, but the environmental benefits are wonderful, and the disease prevention is a plus! Being vegan is about doing what you can "as far as possible and practicable" to avoid harm against another being.

I agreed! I went raw vegan 5 years ago! It’s fantastic for detox because my aches and pains went away after a few weeks, I slept like a baby! But then I can’t keep my weight up and I have to eat so much food so I introduce cook food back into my diet. I still check my lab work every 6 months to a year! On another video you said that when you followed a vegan diet don’t expect your health perfect because it’s not! I totally agree because when I don’t feel my health at best, I beat myself up because “I do everything right, I suppose to be healthy ALL THE TIME “ LOL! In modern life we have a job, kids, spouse, pets, a garden in my case, friends and family, we can’t just focus on eating the best food on the planet 100% at the time!

The world is definitely changing in the right way I think ! (at least in terms of perception, not necessarily action). If you think being vegan is hard now imagine what it was like 10 years ago haha. Sadly I'm still a vegetarian (even though I eat mostly vegan at home) because I don't live in a particularly vegan friendly town or even country (Switzerland yay cheese) and socially it is hard ! but man if I lived in a big city like Berlin or London I wouldn't think twice about it ! Even in Portugal I've seen such a huge difference in just a few years, I go to Lisbon often and most of the restaurants have a small vegetarian or vegan menu ! That was not the case like 3 or 4 years ago when I started going there I had to eat omelettes all the time lol

I went vegan overnight and don't recommend it, not because there's a risk you'll fail, but because your gut won't be very happy. 😂 Also, I hate the low-fat craze - it's very bad, especially for us females, since we need lots of healthy fats to make progesterone.

I agree with all of these. There is no such thing perfection. We are all on a journey. Being vegan is a constant learning process. I like the idea of people who are starting out to say that they are transitioning into veganism because it is a lot to take in and a lot to learn in the beginning. We do not live in a vegan world which makes things incredibly hard, but as long as we are doing the best we can with what we know, that is all we can do.

Some vegans shame people for eating animal products. Personally I think that no one should shame anyone if they’re vegan or not. The vegan diet isn’t for everyone honestly and people should respect that. I’m not vegan but I am thinking about transitioning into it and try it out bc I’m open to trying alternatives and vegan/ vegetarian recipes and options.

You said it so well, I am not entirely vegan mostly vegetarian. However, I do use products that are vegan and for medical reasons I can't consume a lot of animal foods so I am in between. I also went vegetarian/vegan overnight because I felt guilt consuming meat and sea food. I don't think I could ever go back. I recently discovered a vegan Asian restaurant in my city and it's just as good as non vegan Asian foods. Thank you for your channel I love watching your videos and delicious food.

One of my best friends recently went vegan (I’m not) and I can’t imagine being anything other than supportive of her. What the hell’s it got to do with me?! We’ve discovered some great vegan cafes/restaurants since and I’m more than happy go with. Why should veganism be any different to any other choice someone in your life makes for themselves? But yes, negativity seems to be the majority response :(

One thing I tell myself is that I can "cheat" if I need to but have yet to do that. I feel so much better that it hasn't tempted me. My family tries to get into arguments with me on why we need to eat meat, and I just shut them down. LOL
