Thanks everyone! If you want more specific drills for those critical base mechanics, you can check out my Ultimate Training Guide: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2a5iaB9rZ6iq5I Edit: Some of you are asking about fast/quick aerials. I actually didn't include those because at this point I consider them to be as fundemental and basic as the aerial itself (which is reflective of how far the playerbase has some). Fast aerials are super critical in becoming faster/more effeciant at the game!

Hello Mr Khan. I think your videos are great! However, every time you put text on the screen and blur the video in the background, I find myself trying to watch the blurred video instead of reading the text and my eyes start hurting because I'm trying to focus on the out-of-focus video. Maybe I'm the only person this happens to? Either way, I think it would be great if you didn't do that... or maybe if the video was just darker or more blurred so it's not so tempting to try to keep watching the gameplay.

@MRazorK10
@MRazorK10 5 жыл бұрын
Funny thing is, bumping others has its usefulness peak around diamond ranks because they're good enough to save most direct shots yet they're not super aware of the other 5 cars on the field. Before this rank you can score a lot of goals even if there's a defender in the net, and after that players just know where you are and what are your intentions so they'll often just move away from the bump or start their aerial sooner. Perfect tip for people in the high plat / diamond range
@HJDSimon
@HJDSimon 3 жыл бұрын
Bit of a 'catch-all' but that kinda falls into "Decision making". Knowing when to go for a bump/demo to do it effectively so you're not wasting time, boost, or just leaving yourself massively out of position for little to no gain, is definitely a very useful skill though.

Go into free play for a few minutes every time you turn the game on and force yourself to land on the wall and jump from the wall at all sorts of angles at full speed. Notice none of these skills are about the petty points you used to earn toward leveling up (like epic saves etc). You can save a ball from way out in front of your net and not see a credit to your name. There are so many things that don't involve scoring goals, making assists, saving and making shots that are critical to the game. Some toxic players will point to the scoreboard and say, "You're getting carried," when you're providing the foundation needed to make the game successful. It's not a 1v2.
@Totti0990
@Totti0990 5 жыл бұрын
But the thing is Psyonix deleted many points that you receive ingame for example shot on goal was worth 30 points. Now it is worth 10 points. The first touch at a kickoff is now worth 0 points. I haven't really seen all of the reduces, because I am not playing the game that much anymore, but thats a thing I really am salty about, because many points I made were not from goals, but from these "tiny" things you contribute, like a good kickoff or a good pass in front of the goal and now it feels like you get 0 reward. I know some games I just dont hit the goal and it is just super annoying so I try to make the right pass but when I dont even get points for that it just feels like I did nothing and then I play like that because it pulls me down.

This is one of the best reason why people don't play in team, because they just want to be the MVP and they don't care about Teamplay and really win the match.
@Totti0990
@Totti0990 5 жыл бұрын
I dont really care about MVP, but winning a game with like 100 points while your teammate has 400 just sucks, because I dont get any points for what I am contributing and then the "you get carried lol lol you are so bad" flamers really piss me off because I have no real "evidence" to prove them wrong.
@TeKaMOTO
@TeKaMOTO 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah they're absolutely meaningless. I don't even get why there is a score in the first place. I got zero points a couple days ago in a plat 3 match because both (random) guys on my team always cut their rotations in half, right in front of me, and they would also both chase the ball across the opponents net forcing me to turn around and hang back at midfield. When I did eventually go for challenges and neither one of them rotated back in time, and we got scored on I got spammed with "Defending..." "Wow!" etc.. And apparently everyone in the lobby thought it was hilarious that I got zero points. It was such a struggle being forced out of position by teammates and trying to find a proper position when both guys would never rotate behind me. On top of all this. Neither one of my teammates called their kickoffs, causing both of them to go for corner boosts on a kickoff while I was behind them AND the more toxic of the two even turned around on one of his solo diagonal kickoffs to get the corner boost. He just boosted and turned in field, making a 200+ dergee turn on the ground to get the boost and then spammed "What a save!" at me when I didn't save the opponents shot. Told them after the game to go and have a look at the replay and count the times they cut me off or chased the ball across the field when they should have been going back and got greeted with a "lol you suck dude". gg

I get back into this game every few months and get to diamond 3v3 randoms mainly with just my positional sense. I can do some basic aerials but I'm slow and cumbersome af at it compared to people who know what they're doing. I find a lot of players at this level think they're good at doing the fancy stuff, and some of them are. But most of them have huge holes in their game when it comes to defensive sense and reacting to what others are doing. My skill set actually complements those players on my team quite nicely which might explain my decent rank despite not being very good technically. The funniest thing at this level are players who think it's 1v1 and exclusively try to dribble the ball up the wall and fly it into the goal, which is probably the only thing they've spent time practicing. Obviously anyone with any awareness can see this coming a mile away and either intercept mid air or simply wait in the goal for them to give the ball to you so you can counter attack.
@alfredoalejandro87
@alfredoalejandro87 3 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with this. I am sort of new to the game but I have been finding that these players with fancy moves can be very easy to counter. I noticed very samey type of tactics with a lot of these teams. My tactics sound similar to yours, though I tend to always be very conservative with my boost for those ever important counters.

If your teammates interrupt the play you're in position in the middle for any sort of pass play, if your teammates get beat you're in a position to block anything towards the net.
@theMosen
@theMosen 4 жыл бұрын
@@HeyRoosty I hear that advice a lot and I honestly don't find it very helpful, at least not without further explanation. If you're literally standing still at back post, then no, you're not in a position to block anything towards the net, you will not reach those near post shots. I'm not saying you shouldn't rotate to back post, you certainly should, and you certainly can and should use your rotating momentum to make saves from there, but you do need that momentum to reach a near post shot, which means it's all about being back post _at the right time_ and reading your opponent's attack. If you're at the back post too soon and have to wait for the attack, it's better to go in goal and face outwards.

think about how much better your basic car control is now than 200 hours ago though, freestyling as a specific skill isn't useful, but the car control training you get from freestyling is invaluable

I beat a freestyling smurfer in silver who said he had an account in diamonds, so he stays asking me to not play and just watch his tricks, as I said “nah dude, I want to fight you even if I loose miserably” and then I just went full try hard sweaty position tactic mode and managed to beat him by one goal in the last 10 seconds of game (I somehow saved and blocked most of his airdribbly steroids diamond stuff with just basic mechanics” and after that the guy was so damn mad I was like “hey dude gg, that was really hard” (I really meant it that match was damn hard and I was glad I overcame such challenge) and he started you know... “STFU cunt” “you need to die” and a lot of other lovely gems of comedy.

I got to say this contained a really helpfull tipp for me, which is on defense, when when I am driving in the same direction as the ball is going, I never turn around and powerclear the ball. I think that is because I did a lot of Trainingpacks with me defending far outside the goal, where saving is everything, but not initiating a counter-attack. I hope implementing this will help me rank up.

It definitely will. I use to be stuck at diamond 3 for like 3 seasons.Someone pointed this out to me, that I never turn around with power slide to hit it, when i'm directly behind it. I always tried to run back save the ball from the hit or do something weird and stupid. It's cuz I was REALLY bad at power sliding and I always fked it up. So I started just practicing power sliding. it really made a huge dif in my gameplay. especially with dribbling.

Yea I definitely agree that powerslide plays a big role in many things, gaining overall speed, recovery and agility in your groundplay. It makes you simply so much more agile that anyone interested in getting better should spend at least 5-10 minutes just powersliding and turning around in different ways every day for a few days. You will notice a difference!

On the topic of reaction time: Reaction comes through repetition, when you do something enough times (over and over and over) it becomes instinctual. So while “training reaction time” isn’t REALLY a thing, you can still increase your reaction speed through that repetition of simple tasks. It’s why, no matter the sport or activity, fundamentals are so key. When you’ve mastered the fundamentals, you can master the advanced.
@animorte9790

Also a lot of people need to keep in mind that many of the decisions you see high level players making is a lot less about reaction and more about planning ahead. Just what you said, practicing over and over. Seeing the same things so many times, they can start to prepare for certain decisions before the time comes to make them.

Great video Sunless. Car control, ball control and positioning are my trinity. The trick I always found useful for power is to hit the ball after a bounce. The guys who do that after a wall bounce are my heroes. Personally I practice 50-50s on kickoffs. I'm always changing my timing, positioning last second, reading players off the ball and of course the kicker, in real time. Not just trying to speed kick or do the same thing, has improved my 50-50 skills. FWIW im a 2-3 year plat 3. Lol. Love the game though. Love your videos.

Some others that should have been mentioned, despite that it could fall in the decision making category are clears, passes, reading bounces, and recovery (though you did mention wave dashing). Clearing is very important, it's not just hitting the ball really hard. It needs to be done in a precise manner that it saves your team time and makes the other team have a hard time getting any momentum off of it. Lot's of people don't do this properly, hence why i think it should be mentioned. Also, some people will still hit the ball at the opponent when they are challenging the clear. Instead of going for a hard hit directly at your opponent setting up a dunk. If you have the time, just hit it to the side. It really goes a long way. This will happen a lot in lower ranks, and it really will improve your rank if you are struggling diamond or below. knowing when to pass, when to shoot, or when to hit the cross bar is very important. When someone can defend your ball, it's obvious you shouldn't try score unless you think you can make it or they will have a bad clear. Reading bounces (or the player themselves) will make up for bad reaction time. If you can read a bounce before the opponent can, that'll make you 100x faster than them. Learning to read bounces before others can is hard but it's an essential skill. Recovery time is something a lot of low ranks really really fall bad on compared to the higher ranks. And i'm surprised it wasn't mentioned in this as a key requirement. Recovery time itself will save people from tons of goals and horrible situations. Most of these will make you play faster, and thats why when you rank up, you see people who play really fast compared to someone who potentially could have TONS "better" mechanical skill but plays slower. These are the mechanical skills that go unnoticed because it's not fancy. I'm roughly the same shit rank as sunless khan. But i'm pretty horrible at mechanics. I miss a lot of shots, and I do some really horrible plays that questions my rank. but majority of the time it's cuz I play smarter, clear better (sometimes at least), challenge better, and recognize 1v2 situations and how to deal with it better than some players with better mechanical skills. Like reading passes and positioning for the save and what not. Things I really need to work on is better recovery and reading corner bounces better. It get's me still at this rank. as well as consistency with shooting. I miss more than I should at this rank. way more... :(

I've always loved this game because of the possibilities with the mechanics. I've spent countless hours practicing advanced mechanics and can air dribble and ceiling shot very consistently. That with decent basic skills like whats in the video did get me to champ 1 but I can't progress, positioning and knowing when to commit to something is the most important aspect of this game. That being said I would still practice these mechanics a lot, being able to dribble isn't very important but practicing mechanics like that will improve your car control a lot.

Sunless something that helps me react faster is going in and doing a 4v1 against allstar bots. but having the matches play in slow motion. I'm not too big on trying to practice stuff in free play over and over again. I do find that playing against the bots helps me when it slow mo. I can get my shots down better and when the game is on reg speed i find myself reacting faster. This does not help learn how to defend against things like flip reset ceiling shots or anything like that. However, I just learned to watch the ball in game instead of the car. Thats a skill I learned from playing basketball and american football as a kid and teen. If you watch your opponent instead of the ball 8/10 they are going to cross you up in some way shape or form. However, if you keep your eyes on the ball you wont be distracted by what their body is doing and vastly improving your defense. Crossover goes from a 8/10 to more like a 2-4/10. Thats just my opinion. I'm currently between Diamond 3 and champ 1. I keep falling between the two. I can say that I can't do really any high level plays. I can't even flick properly. However, my defense is pretty good. So even though I may not be able to flick very well, I can defend against most flicks and other high level shots. As they say in American football, defense wins games.

@trolloroo9807
@trolloroo9807 5 жыл бұрын
@rachael the thing is: the better mechanics you have, the more likely it is for you to have a fast response to a scenario that happens. As for positioning, it is the key and hardest thing to learn probably, since you can't really just repeat a certain move and save it to your muscle memory in free play or custom practice, but you just have to play games more and more until you get "in touch" with those scenarios so many times that it refines your decision making and reaction. You just gotta play more. The more you put effort in to actually thinking what you are doing and why you are doing it and checking replays afterwards and recognizing those things that went right or wrong and you'll become better faster. Also better mechanics allow for more versatile positioning as well since you can have more options to go for something if you can for instance take-off from the wall and fly directly to the ball without air rolling your car the right way first or just plainly have a better touch at the ball to make it go faster and more accurate etc.

With regards to your first point, I would definitely say that playtime and just putting in the hours is what helps you learn how to make the best hits from awkward angles. But a close second or possibly even tied is just watching high level game play and paying attention to how they play. Both of these things have overall been for me how I've improved in that regard. As well as being willing to experiment or improvise in a given situation and put the trust on my teammates to be there.
@tyleregan3001

While "watching high level game play" can be useful to some, it's actually a bad thing for others. When you have little skill, watching these higher skilled players is incredibly daunting and you may not even know what to watch for. There is actually quite a bit to rocket league as shown by the 5 main mechanics to focus on. Positioning, how you hit the ball, boost management, etc. If you tell someone what to focus on when watching the skilled players, they can learn about that, but to learn everything or even one thing without knowing what that one thing is...A lot of people just can't learn well that way. And others will thing the flashy things are what they were supposed to learn, and then spend countless hours trying to perfect something that will only help them once in a while.
@Seanuu
@Seanuu 5 жыл бұрын
@@tyleregan3001 I appreciate the incidental shade thrown while trying to make your point. But it really feels like you are just venting about a certain type of person you hate playing with/against. Obviously if I'm posting this here, there is like a 95% chance that anyone reading it will understand I dont mean just watching RLCS events and trying to emulate skill intensive but incredibly unfeasible techniques that could be better replaced with good fundamentals. Which in all fairness, can be done by watching the Pro RL players (why do you think one of the number one suggestions for getting better is playing against them? So you can see how someone better does it.). Though if someone is reading this and has made it this far, you are then bound to find the Pros KZbin content which actually is incredibly beneficial as many of them talk through their game play and are not all about flashy techniques. Actual points aside, for gods sake you are literally just regurgitating what Sunless already said in this video, why even bother?

I know this is an old video at this point, but I think that reaction time is one of the things you need the least in this game. And instead of that, I think it mainly comes down to decision making, which includes rotation and positioning and field awareness. If you’re skilled at paying attention to what’s happening on the field (the ball, the ball’s attackers, and your teammates and opponents that are rotating) and if you have good positioning, then you hardly need to react to anything. You know when the ball is going to be cleared hard or a shot is coming at your net or when an opposing passing play is being set up, so you can prepare for those things without having to react quickly when they do. I would confidently say that, because I pay a lot of attention to the field and not just the ball, there’s not much I have to react to besides passing plays from both my teammates and my opponents.

Been c2 for the longest time but now i only play unranked. I know I am good at positioning, at defense, and am good at double touches I am just scared to go into ranked for some reason. Beaten alot of GC players in unranked. One reason is that I still don't really know how to fast aerial lol. I really only play ranked for my champ rewards and then back to unranked.

@denizmax433 wtf? A C2 with no idea how to fast aerial?? Fast aerial is the simplest mechanical thing in the game and very easy to grind it in your muscle memory (tip, set your dodge deadzone between 0.5-0.7 or something like that). And why would you be afraid of ranked? It's a freaking game it's not like Satan asked you to play a game and you would lose your soul to him if you lost... Wtf is wrong with people? I suppose it's that kind of people who start getting all emotional against your own teammate if they fail or miss a single thing and start hitting that forfeit button like an autistic nut case. Or it's the other way around so that you're the one that's being afraid of all the salty assholes that you meet in ranked way too often in this game (or in any game really, the sad truth is that a high percentage of people are just plainly dumb and spiritually undeveloped). No offence meant, I hope you all best dude even if you recognized yourself as either of the players I described.

I completely agree. I regularly hit ceiling shots flip resets air dribbles. Double touches. And I’m champ 2. I regularly lose games. Because I’m missing some of the core values. Spent a lot of time in free play working on mechanics. But it’s how I enjoy the game. And by regularly I mean a couple cool goals every day that I play. Not every game.

For y'all that don't believe this, just watch Scrub Killa play 1s. He barely does any flicks, and the only ones he does are diagonal and front flicks. His entire game is based on defense, boost management, and being. And now he's one of the best players in the world.

JanIsaac Concepcion You can go almost as fast reversing as going forward, using the backflip jump. Why do you think every team sports defensive players go on reverse when they back up to their net. Anyway, unless you are higher than D2, I don’t really need your advice :)

I started rocket league about 2 months ago playing a couple nights a week and I’m fairly easily solo climbing through diamond from mostly just proper positioning and aerial training. Forcing myself to be 3rd man a lot of the time and make sure I’m the defense when my teammates won’t position defensively. Most of what I’ve been getting by on is just positioning I learned from growing up playing soccer. The biggest thing I’ve noticed with lower than champ 2 players is just not proper positioning and not understanding rotations and cutting rotation. I’ve seen some plats have some pretty shockingly good mechanics but there positioning and team awareness and they’re usually the toxic ones. They don’t even realize they’re usually the problem on the team... It’s a super fun game and I’m really enjoying the huge skill ceiling!
@zCrabOG
@zCrabOG 5 жыл бұрын
I think you can add Awareness to that list. It kind of comes in with decision making. but from what I see is that a lot of players don't know where everybody is at all times on the pitch. If you know without looking where all your teammates are at all times you know when you should be going for the ball or not.
