Very useful lesson! Thanks. Tip1: Change the grammar - Present simple -> Past Simple When is the next meeting? -> When did you say the next meeting was? When is the conference? -> When did you say the conference was? Tip2: Use "I was hoping" We want to finalize the contract today -> We were hoping to finalize the contract today. Tip3: Use "I was wondering" Can we change the date? -> I was wondering if we could change the date? Tip4: Use the passive form to make it sound less personal He told us that we would get a 5% discount -> We were told that we could get a 5% discount. Tip5: Use "Would you mind" when asking people to do things Give Tom some help with the report, please. -> Would you mind giving Tom some help with the report, please.

Thank you very much for this video! I have 2 questions ; 1. When you use "I was wondering", do you normally put "?" at the end of the sentence? The order of the words at the beginning of the phrase is a subject (I) followed by a verb (was wondering) so I've always thought "?" is not needed. 2. Can you say "a coffee" instead of "a cup of coffee"? I don't think it's grammatically correct to say "a coffee" but is it common to use anyway among native speakers? I find your channel very useful, especially because it's hard to find actually relevant and natural English to use in a workplace. I'm looking forward to your new videos to come 🤗

Hi Yukari! 1. To be honest, using a question mark at the end of "I was wondering ..." is actually not grammatically correct - you're right. However, we don't always follow the rules and sometimes do this in writing to make it clear that we want an answer. In speech, we often use raised intonation at the end of a "I was wondering...." statement, so it kind of sounds like a question. 2. Absolutely! It's probably more common to ask for a coffee than a cup of coffee. So glad you find the channel useful! Take care, Derek

@@derekcallan-englishforpros Thanks Derek, it's nice that you speak German too! I think the best way to learn languages is to enjoy the journey of itself. Easier said than done because oftentimes frustration comes in our way but let's keep going with positivity :)
