I took early retirement and have never regretted it. I live happily on a low income. I count my blessings. I live in a beautiful place. The beach is a 40 minute walk away though beautiful woods. I get up at dawn and walk around my local park for 40 minutes every day. I am an introvert happily living alone. I have three important close friendships and regularly talk on Whatsapp and very occasionally go out for coffee. I have a friend who visits me every weekend morning and brings coffee and pastries. The rest of the time I read on my kindle and do creative writing. I am waiting for the artist bots to improve so that I can turn my writing into a graphic novel. I eat a simple largely vegan diet. As time goes by I find I need less and less material stuff. I am spiritual and meditate - I am not afraid of death. I suppose I am lucky to have such a vivid imagination and I really enjoy my own company. I donate to charity rather than volunteer as I am not a people person. According to the experts I am doing everything wrong because I am not very social. But I am happy.

@@NeilPasricha1 I was raised Catholic and have always believed in life after death. I have always been fascinated by the spirit world. I am no longer Catholic - I left as a teenager when the pope condemned birth control. I have often visited psychics and although some are definitely charlatans others definitely are not. And so I have had pretty convincing evidence that we all survive our physical deaths. I have also had one very impressive spiritual experience when attending a meditation circle and channelling session. What has really made the difference has been meditation. The moment I enter the meditative state I am flooded with a feeling of perfect peace, love and joy and know that nothing down here really matters because it is all a temporary learning experience and that I am greatly loved unconditionally.

I was a teacher before forced retirement since education is ageist. I missed many of my kid’s activities because I couldn’t get time off. Classes during the summer and grading papers or prepping took my “free” time. Teaching is not just class time. Teachers are the hardest working under paid and under appreciated professionals. Yet without them, CEOs and professionals wouldn’t be able to do their jobs.
@NeilPasricha1

Totally agree. When my dad was deciding to become a teacher or a doctor (rural India, 1950s) he says teachers and doctors got paid the same -- the culture valuing education and health somewhat equally? My wife Leslie is an inner city elementary school teacher in the Toronto district school board. "Hardest working professional" -- for sure. Thanks, dreambuilder.

Have just heard the first 10 minutes but just wanted to come here and say that, wow. My mother's side of the family was from Taran Tarn too. Mom's mom being born there in the 1920's. So weird yet heart-warming to hear 'Taran Tarn' , a small village in Punjab, India, on the Rich Roll Podcast. Also father's side of the family was from areas that are now in Pakistan and they lost all their wealth too due to having to migrate to main India during partition. My Mom Dad have worked hard though and have managed to help my brother move to Oshawa, Toronto. Its amazing how experiences of our ancestors continue to in some or the other way influence lives of future generations. Some of the similarities between Neil and my background make me all the more excited to listen to this! Thanks for sharing!

You can be sad and lonely and live to a ripe old age. My mother died age 96. She lived with my sister and was well cared for but my sister said she was very lonely. A naturally shy introvert she did not make friends easily. We both agreed recently that she would have been better off without her final decade as it was a litany of physical deterioration. I think it is better to focus on quality rather than quantity. A long life is not necessarily a good one.

@@NeilPasricha1 Yes they were sad because gradually she could no longer do the things she enjoyed. She became deaf and even with a hearing aid could no longer listen to the radio or join in conversations. She could still watch TV and read the subtitles but then her eyesight became really quite poor and she could no longer do that or read - she had been a voracious reader - and even reading aloud to her became difficult because she was deaf. She had loved sewing and knitting and was very good at them but arthritis in her hands made that impossible. She used to love going for long walks but grew increasingly frail and eventually suffered from mild incontinence so long walks were no longer possible. She was greatly loved and knew it but felt 'surplus to requirements' as she put it having been raised by nuns to always be busy and make herself useful.

I believe the narrative on "social aspect" as a source of happiness needs amendment of sorts, as it varies from person to person. Drawing from my personal experience, observations and studying of gurus works, and other knowledgeable individuals, including yourself (I doubt you are social? Are you?), it becomes evident that as and when, one begins to grasp the true meaning of happiness, they tend to drift away from social life. They may have only a few close friends, rarely engage in social activities, and find little value in laughter at parties. Interestingly, this transformation occurs naturally. At least in my case! Consequently, the overarching message is to seek happiness from within, and although it may sound philosophical, it is an undeniable truth. The external world may or may not be genuine, but its relevance to our happiness is in fact negligible. Those who feel intimitated by their social circles are not the same people at home. While it is indeed wonderful to have good people around us, their presence does not appear to be a necessity. Otherwise, why would we tend to become more solitary as we grow wiser? Why do we shift our perspective to see others through their own lens instead of our own? Paradoxically, the understanding of happiness often emerges from detaching oneself from societal expectations and norms. Sorry to bore you...I get such thoughts on my birthday :) www.umeshchhikara.com is me

Not boring at all! Loved reading your thoughts. Interesting. Hmm. I am pretty social. And I hear and nod at a lot of what you said ... but I'm not sure I agree with this phrase: "more solitary as we grow wiser" .... is that true? Maybe. I don't know! I plan / hope to have lots of friends / family / social around me as I age. Then, I guess, if it is true, there are somewhat obvious reasons ... the challenges of losing parents, siblings, friends, etc. My wife's grandparents are 91 now and her grandmother recently said -- half-joking but not really -- "All our friends are dying!" Buuuuuut I also think everyone's own experience is 100% valid etc etc. So, you know, for me, for you, for others, I think the "take what works, ignore what doesn't" definitely applies here. Again, appreciate the thoughtful comment!

Gotta say something abut the "40-hour-pr week with summers off" that teachers get. After having taught in a public school setting for 20 years, I never met a teacher who could complete all of the administrative tasks PLUS teach in 40 hours a week. (I used to put in 50-60 hours a week, except when there was a block of standardized testing coming up, but let's not go there.) Nor have I met a public school teacher that didn't have to go to mandatory summer trainings to stay certified. Many of us also taught summer school in order to make enough money to have a decent life style. This is not hate mail. It's a reality check. No actual teacher would identify with that cushy job description.

Yeah, a lot of the research on reading fiction is about the fact that you're immersing in another world, another gender, another religion, another time in history, etc. Maybe this happens with some non-fiction? Biography? A really transporting memoir? But the "seven laws of whatever" style of non-fiction likely doesn't hit this... no offense to Peter Attia! (whose book I also bought and am enjoying..)

@@NeilPasricha1 I took four pages of notes. The condensed version: 2x2 Time vs. Importance matrix, two questions for career decisions, e,c,u from reading fiction from real books, four S's instead of traditional retirement, the rock clock, the monthly dashboard system, and the three books podcast. Two favorite quotes: "Tools enable but do not force outcomes or trajectories," and "Systems can light up the brains of people who have an unhealthy relationship with control." Quotes may be from Rich, but altogether it was totally worth the time. Thank you.

Good conversation, however, the reality for lots of Americans at this time is survival, putting food in the table when eggs are $8.69/dozen. Let’s talk about Real life as it is in 2023! Social Community, can you still take a class in a College classroom as before or the majority of courses are online. Life is way more complex now than just your guest 3 or 4 S’s .

Amen, absolutely, totally agree -- "survival, putting food on the table" are massive issues for many. My models are definitely oversimplified and I offer them as guiding forces -- little paths, little lights -- versus any kind of step-by-step through individual realities. I am blind to much. For sure. Take what works. Chuck what doesn't. Sending you energy for your journey.

@NeilPasricha1 Жыл бұрын
3 S's of Success? Sales (commercial love!), Social (critical love!), Self (self love!) ... In The Happiness Equation I argue that it's impossible to have all 3 at once so when beginning a new project you should aim for the one you want. I think with Rich I'd shared that my podcast (3 Books) is around Self success ... so I don't put ads / sponsors etc on it... whereas other things I do or have done (i.e., books) I've aimed for Sales success... etc.

There has never been a case where we saw Rich flaying himself and rolling and roiling as if ants were crawling all over his body while opening a conversation with a guest. At the climax of this disturbing display, he even called himself a douchebag. I exploded with clarity over this weird behavior. I believe because it has something to do with me coming from a former British colony with 11% Indians, 26% Chinese, and 63% locals. This kinda mirrorred Kenya, where Neil's family resided. However, I'll need quite a bit of space to elaborate.

I guess I’m kind of an ignorant hard ass. Maybe I’m not? After having become vegan in my early 60s, and thoroughly embarrassed about not having that Epiphany previously in my life, I cannot help but wonder why people who proclaim themselves to be teachers, gurus, influencers, instructors of life …That have not had that most important of Epiphany‘s before they began promoting themselves as such. The story of his father and the two hamburgers just makes me think that his father and his mother were completely clueless on a certain level…as I was before my 60s. I’ve googled whether or not this gentleman is a vegan himself and I cannot find that information. I just have a hard time taking advice from somebody about living my life who has not had that Epiphany, how important it is to treat animals humanely, and to care about the planet. Perhaps I am throwing the baby out with the bathwater?
@NeilPasricha1

Totally fair, Evan. I don't proclaim myself to be a guru. I'm simply trying to live a life of purpose and intention -- and I just do so publicly in an attempt to constantly learn and share. I'm not vegan. I eat meat. I eat vegetarian often and my current practice is to go "meat free" each day until the seal is broken. So, pretty intentional anyway. The seal usually gets broken midday or end of day sometimes and I make it through a full day veg like 1-3 days a week maybe? Anyway, that's just where I am -- since you asked. Sorry to hear you're feeling embarrassed about your "pre-Epiphany" life... go easy on yourself! We're all just moving our own, going our own way, doing our best. You and me both! Thanks for listening.

I appreciate you getting back to me and your honesty. But I am even more perplexed how someone of your intelligence and compassion cannot see the hypocrisy in your words. No one is asking anyone to stand on a soapbox and proselytize veganism. But if Someone with a public persona, such as yourself, simply mentions it in such an interview as you had with Rich roll, that brings a whole new aura of compassion, understanding and caring to your being and your message and affects people in a very positive fashion You say you are not a guru, but you are trying to help people to live their life in a certain fashion. That’s what gurus do, or teachers or influencers, etc.. The information is out there especially to someone as in touch as you are. I hope you have that Epiphany soon and that you join the throngs of voices to promote humane treatment of animals, humane treatment of yourself, and a love of the planet and the environment that we are going to leave our children and grandchildren. Being a father of a young child, as you are, and knowing the consequences of animal production on global warming, you more than anyone else should be concerned, and promoting a vegan lifestyle, for the sake of your children and your grandchildren The best of luck to you.

Aw, I'm sorry Shannon. "Frantic used care salesman." LOL. I know my energy can be off-putting to some. Story of my life! Never had a coffee or tea, if you can believe it. ("You wouldn't want to see Neil on caffeine," my friends used to say in college.) Good call on too many studies. I think I was nervous -- sometimes I reach for "proof points" when that happens. Whipping them out like ninja stars. As for me and Leslie, we're actually happy. We have four little boys. For the past 9 years since the first was born our system has been: I do mornings solo (630-830), she does days (baby at home, now on call for school, etc), she does afternoons solo (3-5), and then we do evenings together. We don't have any nanny / babysitter. It works for us. Everyone is different, of course. Part of it, I think, is that the 10-rock visualization I talked about enables me / us to lean into the "kid decade" -- the one rock where they are very young, etc. Of course, these things may change -- which is why being intentional about a quarterly marriage check-in helps. Again, with the big caveat: for us. As always, for anyone, take what works, chuck what doesn't! Appreciate you taking the time to drop a note.

From what I've read, his wife is no longer a teacher and her job is taking care of the kids during the day. So him going 50/50 with her after 4pm takes him to 25%. 50/50 in the evenings is how most parents do it, so it doesn't seem like there is anything unreasonable here.

You know, I've looked into my energy levels. They've always been high. (I've never had a tea or coffee.) I think, if I go, like, *really* deep, they may be a function of the fact that the first 6 weeks of my life were spent screaming until doctors noticed I had an undescended testicle and a painful hernia. I was brought in for emergency surgery. And, you know, I lived. But, I do sometimes wonder if those first six weeks of some kind of almost blinding-level striving ... kind of revved some internal engine that's never stopped since. (I write about this in one of my books.) Certainly, my mom, and others, have told me that I need to work on being easy on myself -- or, maybe in other words, chilling out a bit more. Anyway, thanks for the comment. Sorry it turned into a therapy session LOL. I love Rich's style too -- an almost languid west coast drawl that smooths over the piercing intelligence and word-juggling mastery that might otherwise intimidate.
