Honestly, solid song, I'd listen to it if it were on the radio. Not an Imagine Dragons fan, but there isn't necessarily anything wrong with music that's formulaic. All music is to a degree. Even classical music, which we consider so complicated now, was formulaic to a degree. For example, a concerto. It is a composition focused on bringing out the qualities of a solo instrument, but with accompaniment. It's usually made up of three movements, a lento or adagio, and then a presto or allegro. It's generally in a single key. Thing is, music needs some kind of structure to be really enjoyable. You could just throw a bunch of random chromatic notes together and that would be very "avant garde". But it wouldn't be pleasant to listen to. It's the formulaicness that makes music pleasing. That said, i do prefer more complex and adventurous music. The key with that is to have a structure, but push the limits of that structure as far as possible, but without breaking it entirely. Like when you're improvising. If you only play the blues scale of whatever chord it is, its going to sound correct, but be a bit boring (to me at least). You have to throw in a few well placed notes which are outside the current blues scale. Maybe one which can be used to transition into the next. Or one which can be used to create a bit of discord which is quickly resolved in order to accent a certain chord progression. Or idk, the possibilities are endless, but if you play too many notes outside the blues scale, it will begin to sound wrong. Where that line is, youll have to find for yourself. TLDR What makes music different from random notes IS THE FORMULA. But to be exciting, music should use a formula, and then break the rules of it just enough to titillate the listener, but not too much to where the formula has been discarded entirely.

@@kbottrill1 not really much these days. In early 2000s, rapping was fast and usually inaudible. Nowadays, it’s less ‘flippity floppity” and has a bit of melody to it. I think what you’re describing is Eminem and whiz Khalifa. But it’s getting slower now, I guess there’s a bit more of a pop element added to them, still sucks to me tho
