Great video, I thought I was the only one that couldn't get my pin up to the target. Your analogy of the bow weighing a hundred pounds is spot on.

Great video Levi! Something I see in so many archers and bowhunters as well is acquiring the target as you described. Most people start holding off of the target because they simply never are taught the way you describe it. Just another tidbit of info for those that may struggle with the execution when using this aiming technique, I see it often with people that have releases with trigger travel that they will feel that movement and force the release to go off. If having movement in the trigger gives you the anxiety, do the exact opposite and eliminate all trigger travel and just build the trigger tension in the release. Both methods work, you just have to try them both and see what works best! Great video Levi!

Man this video & the last one, THANK YOU! No one described it like you did, I felt like I was playing a video game with the sniper & just wait... wait.... wait.... NOW!! (Terrible shot half the time), makes sighting in a bow as a noob a fing nightmare. I'm just in awe of how hard it is mentally to pull the dot on the target, I can move the dot anywhere smooth but the second it get's next to the target I release half the time. Been drawing a line around the bottom edge of my deer lung target. Cheers for the help

That is exactly what I've been dealing with. I couldn't raise my bow and I'd get all nervous when my pin was in the middle. So I would wank the trigger so bad that sometimes I would miss the whole target. I have helped myself from watching John Duddley and working on some flaws in my form. I feel more comfortable in the middle now and it helps, but I'm going to try your techniques to really get my target panic under control. It's good to know I'm not the only one dealing with this. Whenever I try to explain it to someone they look at me like I'm crazy. Thank you for your videos about this.

Wow! This is by far my greatest obstacle in shooting a bow. I thought I was the only one that would slowly move toward point of aim and then have the pin get stuck on the left side of the dot. The closer I get to the dot the more the bow seems to weigh. And then when the pin crosses the middle just ripping that release to try and time the shot. Very poor fundamentals. Looking forward to getting better!

Good tips. Worth pointing out that no archer, no matter how good, hits 100% dead center of the bullseye every single time. Watch some competitions. They might have good or even great shots. But nobody's perfect. Don't put unrealistic expectations on yourself.

learn to breathe ! , even as a martial artist breathing IT IS first and foremost , everything ! . i suggest everyone take a QI-GONG course for at least 6 months , then start taking the very mellow form of TAI-CHI . imagine how hard it was for archers to learn how to shoot without our modern sights we have now , OMG !!!!!! breathing is the most important thing to the body ,second being water ,so take a breath ,stay hydrated because there is oxygen in water also lol ! AWESOME SERIES AND ADVIVE LEVI , THANKS BRO !

I did this in the Marines. Up downs. Up on target. Locked. Down. When my friend finally got to take me hunting he finally understood me. Can I see the deer? Not really. Lol But when I did I shot it so fast he fell over. Haha. That came from my up downs. Levi. When you do this how long should it be in the middle for archery practice? Like 3 seconds. Or as long as I can? Thanks. Also what is this spring pull stuff. I'm new to the bow.

Fantastic video👍 I am curious though, some of the archers i know don't go with the flow when attaching fletchings to encourage the arrow to spin in it's preferred direction. They do right helical regardless and comment that encouraging the spin creates issues, primarily arrow heads might spin off. Is that right, or are they off in their reasoning?

Ballistic Sam it will happen! Just trust the process and work through it. I locked above for literally years when I was a teenager. Could not move my pin if you held a gun to my head. But 100s of arrows of just holding on a dot without my finger on the trigger led to me being able to do the same but with my finger on the trigger which led to hundreds of complete and correct releases at 5 yards with my eyes closed. Like Levi said, it never goes away and every good archer deals with it but you will eventually learn how to deal with it. Just takes time, I don’t know anyway around that. Keep at it, the light is at the end of the tunnel!

I just went and shot a outdoor course and it was a lot diff than the back yard. And i kinda new I was doing this in tye back yard but it really showed up there, I shot horrible and no matter what I just get stuck low and I try to swoop it up and fire. And it sucks because you no your doing it but can’t help it, so now that I no this is a thing and it’s not just me that this has happened to. I feel a little better, but I need to work on just getting the pin center immediately, not start out low. And if that doesn’t work I’m going to have to just pull back and aim and let down, and try to completely reset.

I deal with this every year. One thing that helps is to go out to 20 yards, draw your bow and just hold. Do not shoot an arrow, put your finger behind the trigger and just hold then let down. Focus on aiming

I suffered from target panic much of my life. Along came the clicker and cured me for tournament archery. My hunting bow was still an issue with no clicker. I came across a Carter Like Mike trigger release. Setting it so my trigger is in my second groove of my index finger kept me from punching the trigger. It won’t go off until my back muscles come together forcing me to pull through the shot setting off the trigger. I’ve seen most trigger shooters with the tip of their index finger on the trigger under a great amount of tension. There are two kinds of archers. Those with no target panic and those that about to. Thanks for addressing this common fault!

I believe my problem is my bows minimum DL is 27" and I am 26"ish at best. The extra effort/strain of pulling back is creating "extra" unwanted movement which adds to target panic, trying to get the shot off. The other problem is I am target shooting. I could easily hit the "deer zone" but when self competing/defeating you are always looking for the perfect shot to achieve the elusive spider/10.

I've been doing this drill + blind bale for 2 weeks and it's WORKING. I've had target panic pretty bad for a few years and have half assed these drills in the past. Put in the reps and no cheating! I would always lock low 100lb bow like Levi mentioned. I could always hold center with my finger off the trigger so that had to be slowly introduced with this drill but is no problem now. Shooting without aiming and aiming without shooting is working. I did CHEAT and combined the two today and wow

After leaving archery for over 3 decades because of severe TP, I was fortunate enough to discover the tension release. Like Mr. Osborne stated the set hinge worked for him, the tension release worked for me. I never thought I'd ever get to shoot again. Your suggestion of adding movement into the release, adding a spring, or what ever else, these all add the element of not knowing exactly when the release is going to.....well release! Adding this uncertainty leaves me with no other option than to keep the pin on the dot until it decides to go off. When I first started with the tension release, I DID try (unconsciously) to make the release break, but never could (believe me, I really fought that thing). After a bunch of arrows, my body/mind battle finally just gave up and I quit trying to force it. One thing I did do, early on was, at full draw, to slowly release breath using a bit of a hisssing sound. I did this as a means to "connect" my hissing with the increase in back tension, until the release broke. In this initial stage, I was only concentrating on the draw, hold, increase back tension, break mechanism. I was not concerned with any accuracy, save just hitting the butt! Before long, I gave up the breathing/hissing component, and now I draw, set the pin immediately, and I swear the increasing back tension begins as soon as the pin gets on, and as Levi said, within 4-8 sec. is when the release breaks, and I don't know exactly when this will occur. In fact I no longer even pay attention to the release break, I just know it is coming. Believe it or not, I use my tension release hunting as well! Last year, a buck walked out in front of me while I was in my tree stand. Just as I drew back, he turned directly away from me. Well, you might think that having to wait for him to turn would really throw off my 4-8 second window. But nope, I just pressed down on the "brake" thumb lever to "freeze" the release from going off, and I just kept the pin on the buck. Finally, after some time, the buck finally turned, I settled the pin on his heart, started increasing my back tension and because I HAD to keep the pin on target because I don't know when the release will break, the arrow went exactly where the pin was when if finally did! I know this is long winded, but if anyone reading this is suffering as I did for so long, this is what worked for me, and if it lets someone else get back into, and love shooting their bow as much as me, this was worth it. Good luck to you all!

So I have dealt with what you describe and it is always good while practicing but when I’m in a stressed situation it appears two fold. I usually draw above the target or spot and come to my click and then put my pin or dot on the spot I’m shooting. Will have to try acquiring the spot then coming to click and then aiming to see how that helps.

I seem to be able to acquire the target pretty good when i draw back and accepting the movement helped. When i move my finger to the trigger is when things fall apart, the anticipation of the release and forgetting the aim. Going to work on the drill and breathing and expect that can help a lot with the mental game.

Just a good example of how peoples minds operate differently. For me, a light trigger with no travel, is all but unusable for me, after a few misfires, ill suddenly find myself unable to even touch the trigger, but crank up the spring, and five it a few mm travel, and I'm back to just having aiming troubles like what Levi described. I feel that's more manageable than not being able to execute a shot.

Good stuff. I have a point to bring up. On a target I drift, take too long, a lot of the things you mention. On the other hand, when I'm hunting and finally the moment comes, I find myself up, drawn, centered on the scope and level, on target, steady as a rock, in what seems milliseconds. Actually telling myself, "your perfect, shoot, what are you waiting for?" and they hit exactly where I was aiming. I think it's because your mind is occupied for that moment to the max and you don't think too much about every single step, it just happens and done. As you were saying, up on center, begin the release.

I don't want to sound snobbish or anything, but he totally lost me at "fire". Come on, man, there's no fire involved. You fire a pistol. With a bow and arrow, you "shoot" or "loose".

Sorry, but you're way too picky. Whether you consider it correct or not, the term "fire" for a release aid is often used in archery terminology - in fact, a company has named its release aid "Tru-FIRE". Also, a quick search will find even Wikipedia using the term "fire" to describe the release of an arrow from a bow. Finally, I'm sure you know what term is used to describe releasing a drawn bowstring without an arrow? A dry-"FIRE".
