Instead of someone feeling confident about an easy win they now have to face an actual challenge when it comes to the guard. People liked it better when the guard were handicapped and unbalanced. Now that we actually have options and are now formidable, they do not like it and complain. I played my first two years as guard with an 8th edition codex in ninth edition. I would like to think I have gained a lot of experience playing my army. I like to think with consistently playing only guard and Mordian glories tutelage I have become a tactical genius!

@pinoarias8601 But that's a Min-maxing meta-gaming list. A bad, out-dated codex only has a couple viable competitive lists and that was one of them. A better balanced codex should have a wide range of competitive options and viable lists.

@@Edithae No it wasn't lol, he only had about 3 lemans and was even using Legends kriegers in our friendly games. The codex wasn't OP, but it sure as shit wasn't a cakewalk to beat if you weren't running meta stuff.

Smashing a single flank with melee force concentration like you noted is really hard to react to as Guard. I had to bayonet charge a Necron Overlord last game to slow them down long enough to get reinforcements over and angles from the other side of the board for my tanks. Their general methodical nature means they aren't great at tactical flexibility.

A way to counteract the lack of mobility I've found is by putting some infantry in reserves. It helps reinforce weakened flanks, can establish a beachhead, double down on a flank to really punish enemy movement errors, or just sprinkle around for extra units to do RBD while your ordered units get to shooting. There's a lot of flexibility in the free Strategic Reserves ability and I honestly think that you should build every list with the idea in mind that you will plan on putting at least something in reserves whether it's out of the gate or with the redeploy warlord trait we have now

I've been crippled multiple times against melee heavy lists that can slam into you on their first turn (Like Ork vehicles), Guard don't have anything to hold the line against it unless you run Bullgryns on your flanks. I've found that as long as I create large enough gaps in my lines, enough to fall back and prevent consolidation, I can still annihilate the melee threat with enfilade fire though

I'd say Zerg rushing the Guard can work exceptionally well if using highly durable assault units, particularly if you throw enough units in the Guard players face that they can't deal with them all at once. Just throwing a couple at a time means the Guard player can deal with them piece meal. The games I used to lose before I changed to a heavy Mech focus tended to be ones where I was trapped in my third of the board or even trapped in my deployment zone with a ton of melee infantry not letting me out. Granted I would eventually wipe those units and have more left on the board by the end of the match than the opponent, but being locked in your own deployment for 2-3 turns means you can never catch up on all the Primary and Secondary VPs they have been scoring. Necrons with a Skorptek/Wraith focus are exceptionally good at this and CSM are also able to do this quite well too (not to the level of Crons though),. Although I don't have this issue to the same extent now I'm taking Armoured Sent blobs and 5-6 Russes. I find that the most frustrating army to play against as Guard are Tzeentch focused Daemon armies due to the 3++, Flamers, Mortal Wounds and continually respawning OS Horrors. Tzeentch Daemons counter Guard hard.

20:35 with some armies, this can work (for example with Orks, but Orks are kinda designed around spending turn 2 going all-in) or if you have flying combat units that can fly over screens (like the aforementioned Blood Angels) I do agree with you on this point but I just wanted to point out that *sometimes* an all-in can work, especially if you can figure out a way past the screen to charge the parking-lot of tanks.

What ever you do Mordy, dont encourage the enemy to use snipers. It's a dastardly ploy but just pick off an officer or two and we cant score VP on secondries or issue orders.

Only thing that needs a nerf in the guard codex is, of course, the kasrikin bomb. One of the guys in my local FLGS crusade brings it and at 500 pts it almost picks up entire armies turn one. The most unfun thing to place against, you set your models down and then pick them back up and go home.

Ironically... i think that my troll list would be devastating against guards. Rn guards rely on shooting, much like Tau (GW giving the Tau niche to another faction, again), whereas their melee is more of a last resort. My list shoots a lot and hits surprisingly accurately and HARD due to my tenets choices, so tanks or infantry aint gonna be much of a problem, due to... certain things i can pull off... lets just say that "Da jump" meme doesn't works against this list and neither keeping yourself away

I beat my friend's guard army twice with my Ultramarines. Bladeguard against infantry, Dreadnaughts and eradicators for tanks. He brought a baneblade for the 2nd match. I couldn't destroy it. especially with knight of piety and a mechanic healing it. I just ignored it and ended up with 3/4 of the board. Probably would have been tabled, but points wise it was no contest. They should remove the AP-1 from "take aim" and "affix bayonets".

I disagree about not Zerf rushing guard. Armies like Harlequins and Votann should 100% rush the guard turn 1. Harlequins jump up the board with their boats, wipe out the screening units or even all the infantry turn 1 and tag your tanks. The same thing can be done in Votann. From a balance perspective guard have a few outlier units/strats that need to be reigned in. Born soliders needs to be brought in line with other 6s to hit auto wound, leman russ should not be able to bring in groups of 9+, and kasrkin need their mortals capped properly. Overall, the codex is balanced but the skew lists are easily at a 60% win rate.

@@Tehquall Split fire 5 times with while in rapid fire range, lord solar buff, finial buff, 5s to hit auto wound and each auto wound does a mortal. This alone with max roll can do 30ish mortals in addition to damage with ap-2.

Current guard data does not reflect the new codex. Most TO’s still do not allow the codex. Guard are broken and need hit hard and fast to get balanced; internal and external.

most battlereports i have seen with Guard they won kinda easy, i would say 8/10. Astra easily scores 40-45vp primary and 2 secondarys with 15vp, like you said current data doesnt represent the new codex, most pro players say guard is dominating with the new codex. i kinda feel i will trust the dozen of high table player that say its dominating...
