I watched a few videos on the movie, but I think you're the first person who mentions how Mia had horrible friends and no support system, which is partially why she makes such irrational choices. She isn't smart, but having a support system or getting therapy after her mother's passing would have helped her. It's really nice that you mentioned it. People who don't have a good support system tend to turn to harmful substances, but can eventually recover with proper help.

I understand the situation Mia was in but there's a point. Initially she wants to believe she can fix things, I get that. Then you have her thinking she's connecting with someone important to her. I'm still with her to that extent. It was when she was given the solution to it all to just stop that my sympathy runs dry. She knows if she just leaves it well enough alone that's it, it's done. After her previous failures with the ghost hand, she should have known there was no quick fix with it. In fact, it continually kept making things worse.

I think if Mia had gone to therapy in the first place this whole situation could have been beaten. When her mother had unalived herself, especially if her caring father had brought the note, she could have processed that trama with a trained professional and there would have been no open “doors” for the ghost/demon to latch on to. I’m not exactly sure why no one in her life, no counselors at school, no one thought this girl would need some therapy? A lot of times this is why addiction take hold in the first place. She should have gotten help from the get go.

I had problem to sympathise with the MC, from the moment her dad show her the letter i completly cut all empathy i had, when everyone told her the ghost could imitate she refuse the truth and hell they let the ghost in their body so they have access to everything that just logic, she never listened anything, freaking pissed me off. That the case for all the character, when Mia got possessed the first time the ghost was clearly hostile toward the kid for some reason and constantly told him to run, yeah such a great idea to make the kid who was threaten by the ghost do this shit, such genius move.

I’m pretty familiar with grief from loss, and while I definitely want to feel sympathetic for Mia, my sympathy stops when she actively puts an innocent kid in danger for her own reasons, and then exhibits mostly an attitude of “why does everyone hate me” when she endangered someone else’s family. For the same reasons she acted irrationally, so could Riley’s family when they discover that Mia pressured him into putting himself in danger. I’d feel pretty pissed and betrayed by that, especially if it resulted in something so horrific. Mia gets tunnel vision for her mom, instead of even remotely caring about the very alive people all around her except Riley, who she kind of wants to save for her own reasons and kind of wants to save because it’s the right thing to do. She also doesn’t even question the idea of killing Riley, and takes advantage of the forgiveness shown to her to traumatize the family even further. Mia needed help. But Mia wasn’t letting people in for there to BE help. I think her support systems could have been better (by god she needed therapy) but a lot of her mentality is this sort of passive thought that things need to come to her instead of trying for them herself. By the time Riley is put in harm’s way, her biggest support system is feeling hurt, scared, and betrayed, and acting quite irrational out of grief themselves. At most, Mia’s father needed to be WAY more involved. But he was dealing with grief too, and he most certainly cared about his family. I don’t think vilifying the other characters is the right method to being sympathetic to Mia. Mia was in an awful situation, but she certainly had her own agency in the matter.

This is by far my favorite breakdown of this film. Mia was first and foremost a victim, she was already a ghost inside her own body craving any chance she could find to feel something other than the pain she was growing accustomed to and saw the hand as that outlet. It immediately became addictive once she saw it as the only outlet she'd have and that wouldn't have been the case had anyone actually paid her any attention.

9:27 That’s not being family of convenience, that’s protecting family from other family. If you had a family member who was a druggie and then had a little brother living with you guys and the little brother ODed would you not kick the druggie out of the house for the safety of the little brother?

Mia was just so isolated, to the point where she was trying to find connection with Jade and her family. Mia was at her own mother’s funeral and was sitting excluded from everyone else. And as well intentioned as Mia’s dad was to hide the truth of her mothers death, it just lessened her trust in him. She was a vulnerable kid who was going through a lot, it’s no wonder she was susceptible to the hand spirits.

I won't lie I was wondering how you'd manage to beat it, I mean Mia was screwed the second she caught wind of the hands special ability. Grief + feel good + isolation = easy target for manipulation. I think the ghosts will target people suffering, I mean the guy in the beginning had lost his dad, and they had made him target the only column of support he had. Same goes for Mia... In a way that is, I think it's main goal was to purposely take care of the kid (I'm really bad with names ngl) so it'd leave Mia practically alone. The game was rigged from the very second she touched that hand, just like a lot of other addicts escaping their trauma with artificial dopamine.

@kaynhuros2050 Жыл бұрын
When you look at it that way, it's both at the same time. Mia is selfish for getting ghosts inside her ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) but she is doing it because she is desperate and sad with no friends to help her, thus she turns to the only thing that can help her. She is selfish for getting hooked on demons, but she is desperate and sad so its both
@remigal899 Жыл бұрын
Lol because she is to blame and is selfish.
@kaynhuros2050 Жыл бұрын
@remigal899 what about if a person is suffering through grief and is vulnerable to MANY things, take midsommar, for example, dani was manipulated by the hårga because of her grief and her relationship with Christian straining and dying, is she selfish for letting herself being manipulated, or was she vulnerable to it. Mia is basically the same. She experienced grief, and whilst she didn't get manipulated by a cult, she was vulnerable to demonic possessions and had friends who were like Christian, unreliable, and oblivious to how she feels. I said she was selfish in my argument because she could have reached out to sue or her dad or anyone, but then again, i guess they wouldn't really care Conclusion: You are going to need a better argument besides using "lol shes sElfIsh lol"

You’d think that even after being informed that the spirits can imitate people, that Mia would become suspicious about her dead “mom”. She should’ve picked up that it wasn’t really her when it wouldn’t protect her from her “dad”. There wasn’t even hesitation on who to help. Assuming that the ghost could access her memories, Mia should’ve asked the ghost to confirm information that only her mom’s friends and that her dad would know. This way Mia wouldn’t have the details and the ghost would have to make up information on the spot. Then, after confirming with said people and realizing that the “ghost” didn’t provide the right answers, Mia would’ve know that she can’t trust the ghost of who appears to be her mom. Seeing as to that Mia is hallucinating and needs to spend time away from the hand, I’d suggest she signs up to be in a psych ward where, even if she begins to hallucinate, the staff can help snap her out of the trance. Plus, she would be forced to speak with a series of doctors regarding the hallucinations after they happen and after she’s calmed down. As well as about her dead mom, which would enforce Mia to cope in other manners, as well as the fact that she would be away from the hand.

Hopefully someone can explain this because i didnt get it when i saw this. Mia went over her time meaning she was possessed. Just like the dead guy from the start of the movie. Riley went over too. But riley is the only one who went instantly crazy. Why? Was Mia's end only supposed to take her out or was the ghost trying to get a 2 for 1 and take Riley too bc it wasnt working through his own means as ppl were intervening? Or was it just to take riley and got mia by accident? Do they get possessed by a ghost thats holding all the dead captive and thats why she sees multiple of them and it pretends to be her mom or do they just get possessed by who they saw across the table if they go over time and all of them are evil and manipulate whoever they are possessing?

It pmo that people blame the whole thing on mia, but doesn't look at it from her pov, like how she was trying to cope her mother's death the whole time. Or how none of those people were actually her true friends. As for Jade, why wasn't she downstairs willingly knowing that her brother and her friends are in YOUR house talking to spirits. I swear if she was attentive to her brother the whole time instead of making out with her bf, this whole thing wouldn't have happened. And instead of preventing Rileys torture with a pillow, ignoring mias response to talk to a random spirit and ending the "game" anyways, they all did nothing. I blame the whole thing on Jade though, how do you let this go down in your own home, without hearing any screams till the last moment.

As a certified addict and addiction specialist, you can't force anyone to do anything. They need to want to do it themselves. That's the key. All the incentives from family/friends are secondary.... And that meth stuff sound like just jokes. Im not as familiar with meth as i am things with more physical addiction, buuut I'm pretty sure she was just high and the separation in her brain told her to drink her own pee...Its literally close to schizophrenia and they do go hand in hand.
