I like that you pointed out how great the map is. I think there needs to be more built in this style. I was trying to think of what makes it so good. - Lots of bonuses that are enough to make a difference, but not crazy like Pirates Bay - Small bonuses in the middle with larger ones in the periphery. All bonuses can be viable on this map depending on "how the cookie crumbles". Many maps the middle position is just a battleground and no man's land. - Choke points create semi isolated battle zones. This is hard to describe, but I have learned the same thing applies to COD maps. You can have a battle in the noob corner completely unrelated to a battle in North Africa, even though they are only a few territories apart. This allows for mini 1v1s within a larger FFA map.

Certainly there's a point where it could cross over into toxicity but I think most people in the audience are intelligent enough to know that when you're referring to anonymous random color player as a bitch or saying 'fuck that guy' you're not talking about the individual per se, just the avatar and their actions in game.

Pete, I've seen you make several comments about capital rolls being "broken" and wanted to share some insights from coding up a quick battle simulator and running it 100,000 times under various settings. This simulates "true random" but looking just at the middle 90% of outcomes should be pretty similar to what balanced blitz samples. On average (for large stacks), the attacker loses 1.68 troops for every defender (compare to 0.84 troops per defender off cap). However, the variance is quite wide, especially for the medium troop counts we often see rolled. For example, against a 10 cap, 90% of the time the attacker loses from 5 to 31 troops. That's a huge range. There are similarly wide ranges against 20 caps (15 to 54), 30 caps (28 to 76), and 40 caps (41 to 97), then gets tighter as the law of large numbers has its way before a 100 cap (127 to 216). Basically, if anything under about a ~40 cap is being rolled, you shouldn't really be that surprised to see a negative cap roll. And especially against a cap with
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 10 ай бұрын
What is the cause of the variance being so high?
@wibufisika9606
@wibufisika9606 10 ай бұрын
The high variance is probably attributed to how dice probability works. It's considered to be a discrete distribution. On a discrete distribution, we can calculate the variance of an event. But, the smaller the data (Low number of troops), the higher the variance gets. The rolls is just that volatile in low numbers. While the bigger number of troops will make discrete distribution to behave similar as a continuous one..
@SuchBigglesworthy
@SuchBigglesworthy 10 ай бұрын
@@TheKillPeteStrategy It's just the nature of randomness. With only a few trials, probabilities don't have as much of a "chance" to make results conform to expected outcome. Think of flipping a coin. If you only flip it three times, getting all heads is not that surprising. If you flip it ten times, getting all heads is much more surprising. Or how anyone can win one round of any game at a casino, but in the long run, the house always wins. Same idea at play here. This is an important concept in statistics that underlies probability theory and is called the Law of Large Numbers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Law_of_large_numbers
@TheKillPeteStrategy
@TheKillPeteStrategy 10 ай бұрын
@@SuchBigglesworthy sorry if my question wasn't clear or specific enough. I completely understand how the results behave with a ton of volatility at lower numbers. My question is why do we continue to see this volatility with stacks in the 100's and 1000's with any kind of regularity? A positive cap roll of a 2000 stack into a 1000 cap 'should be' exceptionally rare. Or am I mistaken about this?
@SuchBigglesworthy
@SuchBigglesworthy 10 ай бұрын
@@TheKillPeteStrategy We should not see this volatility with any regularity with stacks in the 100s. On a 100 cap, we should basically always see the attacker lose 127-216 troops (1.2x-2.2x), and on a 1000 cap lose 1568-1854 troops (1.5-1.9x). Do we actually see rolls outside these ranges at these scales? I don't actually think I've seen a positive roll on a 100+ cap, only on smaller ones. Do you remember a particular game or video where this happened? I'd be very interested in doing some stats/simulations on it to try and figure out what could be going on.

This would be my tips/strategy for these settings 1. at least 1 bonus before the end of the first 3 rounds. 2. at least 2 territories in different "zones" that have decent size stacks to help avoid card blocking. 3. make sure you have enough troups on your cap(s) 4. Play good neighbour early on, until you can kill them. beat a GM this way yesterday - probably won't work today!!!

This must be so helpful to a large portion of your viewers! Returning to the game after a 3-year break and theres this huge map with a game mode I was too intimidated to even play on? (I used to play exclusively classic fixed) So most of the strategies and late-game caps 1v1 stuff I know today were just from watching your 50+ videos on the settings and go: “Ah doing that is good, doing this is bad”. Hopefully all the newbies watching this can get to absorb the knowledge more directly than just recognizing play patterns!

Years ago, I used to play Risk on PlayStation. One of the game modes had blizzards, but they moved throughout the map. Hey Pete, I've been hovering around Master for a while now, just hard breaking into GM. How do you break stalemates when players refuse to card block? Despite using emotes the best I can to convey teamwork, they usually work 50% of the time. I hate letting games run into 1k+ troops caps. I tend to suicide to progress the game in favor of the best player when we stalemate so I don't play a 2 hour game.

well blue proved to me why just a little later in the video. Some1 just cant yolo a minor troop advantage on ur big stack. There was no reason to take that cap besides greed and poor decision making he already had UK/Iceland/Scandi with a massive pressure point on central EU. Fighting you was never a good play for blue that turn. You set the boarder at scandi, and he panic'ed with the 13 troops on the boarder and went around you. Instead he should have kept his 3 territory bonuses, focusing on central EU. Even if he was worried about you coming into scandi he coulda fortified his boarder and slowed his advance by one turn into central eu.
