Father Merrin takes nitroglycerin pills because he has heart problems, not anxiety. That's how he dies later in the film, from heart attack because the exorcism was too much on him. He was taking more pills than usual during the exorcism because of how bad his chest was hurting which in turn accelerated his heart attack.

@@Tomy_Yon I didn't see the other films, only the first. I'm sure Pazuzu played a big role in Merrin's death, likely using his power to give him chest pains causing him to take more pills and thus causing his heart attack. Demons are smart like that.

Drag the deer back over the 49 acres and skin the deer. Pack the meat in the freezer and mop the area. We have to remember, mentalities were very different back then. People had never been exposed to such a thing. People fainted, threw up, went to shrinks, lost sleep at night. Today, people laugh, especially at the worst possible scenes. You are young and did not get to live the transition from then to now, I did. Take it from me, what is obvious to us now, was not then. Just appreciate the history that this movie and true story created. I live very close to where it actually happened, born and raised and we locals heard that this book and movie were not far off from the actual events. But people kept silent then because people couldn't comprehend such a thing.

Gotta defend the mom in the story here. We recognize signs of possession because of this movie and the ones that came after it. It's part of pop culture and therefore our culture. Chris wouldn't have these cultural touch stones and as a regular person there's no real reason for her to put this together.

@@fightvale57not entirely fair because the film doesn’t follow the mom’s inner world, but i think in the book she suspects reagan uses a magnet or another trick just to mess with her. Additionally, reagan expresses missing her dad (who ignores them), and since her dad’s called howard, chris feels that captain “howdy” might be reagan creating a friend to replace her absent father. For someone to get an appointment with a psychiatrist, you only need a referral if you're using insurance. You can directly get an appointment if you pay out of pocket. I know it costs a lot, but depending on your circumstances, it might be worth it. Unlike therapy, which works with frequent recurring appointments, psychiatrists prescribes medication, and you do not see them again until a later check up. Research says it's faster and better to treat mental health issues with psychiatric medication in conjunction with therapy, which makes sense. But that also means you can choose to try just one, and see how it goes. Getting medication could work faster and end up being cheaper than therapy, assuming that the psychiatrist did a good job diagnosing the patient and choosing a medication that fits the patient's needs.

Playing devil's advocate here (ironically), the reason most audiences know how demonic possession works through cinema. In Chris's defense, this movie was one of the first of its kind. She therefore had no movie to learn about the signs to look for. Possession movies that taught modern audiences the rules/warning signs behind it became as popular as they are now because of the exorcist. Therefore, the only possible way she could have the knowledge we do is if she could see into the future.
