Shawn, good question. Obviously we would all like to graduate from an Ivy League school like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc. But unfortunately that plan does not work out for most people. So I think you have to take a look at your situation in life, weigh your strengths and weaknesses (be honest about it, we all have both). You should also weigh out all your realistic opportunities in life (Will you end up in sales? Will you wind up in hospitality? Are you able to become a different type of professional (ex. accountant, doctor, psychologist, etc.)? You have to weigh everything out and try to decide what you think you would be BETTER AT THAN ANYBODY ELSE. The cream always rises to the the top no matter what school you went to. For example, I played professional baseball with players FROM ALL DIFFERENT COLLEGES (hi ranking, low ranking, no ranking etc.). The school rarely matters and the best players make it to the top. That being said, if you decide becoming a lawyer is what you want to do, and you have an initial passion for a particular area of law (for example, for me it was business, intellectual property and real estate) and I just decided to GO FOR IT realizing I did not like all the other directions I saw my life possible going. To be honest, I felt like I was on a very HIGH DIVE diving board, and I said you know what, I am just going to jump and I will make it. I never doubted my choice and worked as hard as I could, interned for several lawyers, learned everything I possibly could. I have never looked back since and keep pushing myself everyday. For me, it was the PERFECT CHOICE and regardless that I did not end up in Ivy League schools, I never let that hold me back. I look at things differently, I don't really want to work for someone unless I am working with great people. So I hung out my shingle early on and worked with getting real estate brokers licensed. With hustle, it built from there and is still building every day. So me personally (this is not advice telling you to do or not do it - as everyone has to make their own decisions in life) the school itself should not hold you back. I went to Whittier Law School, and frankly this was not a TOP SCHOOL. But I enjoyed it all, worked my butt off and do everything I can to be the best lawyer possible. I help people, enjoy what I do, and make a difference. I hope this helps a bit!!! Think about who you are and where you see yourself in 5 or 10 years. Good luck.

Abraham Lincoln - “He who represents himself has a fool for a client”even though Abraham Lincoln basically taught himself how to read and do math living in a log cabin and then eventually taught himself the law and became a lawyer. I truly believe he may have considered self-representation a good thing however I think he is partially right in this quote for example, representing yourself and defending yourself are not synonymous of each other. If you're in a criminal case and you are defending the state's allegations pro se, you will expose your emotions, however if you're representing yourself as a plaintiff pro se in a civil tort or contract dispute you may be able to be more level-headed and stay on point and let the facts and evidence present themselves in trial or through litigation. Abe is one of my all time favorite Americans

Ideally, yes, you would get paid. You learn, do things of value to the firm. But every situation is different. Keep in mind the sponsor has a tremendous amount of requirements (testing, reports, etc.), so this is not an easy question to answer.

how do I go about finding a office that will allow me to go through the apprenticeship?
@attorneysteve5 жыл бұрын
Well that is the million dollar question. Best I can say is to prepare a detailed application/resume/portfolio for example, and send a proposal to law firms in your local area, and in your area of legal interest. For example, to a business lawyer in San Francisco, or a family lawyer in Los Angeles for example. Set forth what you are willing to do, and maybe some information about the program (trust me, most lawyers and law firms will not know about this). But, if you can provide enough value, and show commitment, maybe they will be willing to meet with you. The tough part is this LSOP program puts a lot of work on the shoulder of the law firms who agree to do this. So, in my opinion, you need to make a very strong value proposition. Good luck.

would applying to a paralegal position and adding this proposition be a good tactic?

Hi I am not aware of a way to become a lawyer in Canada without going to law school. I think California is a very unique state that comes up with novel ideas regarding law practice. So I would say call whatever Canadian State Bar there might be. Best of luck to you. Practicing law is a great profession!

i live in Orange County,CA and i'm attending community college majoring in Political Science and we have a few law school's in California that allow you to be admitted without having a bachelors degree you just need 60 units Trinity law school is one of them and West Los Angeles seems to good to be true they are obviously not ABA approved but they are accredited by the committee of bar examiners you can sit for the bar but the bar passage rates are really low i think like 26% lol and i highly doubt any law firm would hire me i would have to open up a private practice how can you jump from a AA degree to JD it's very tempting but i feel long term it will come to bite me in the ass and really limit myself what are your thoughts?

@@artemarut It is not a scam. My sister in law completed this in Virginia. Was it easy to find an attorney?absolutely not, and you still have to do A LOT of work, take tests etc. It's like law school just not as expensive. So again, it is not a scam. However it does limit what you can do. Whereas, if you get your JD then you can just take the bar in any state that you wish to obtain a license.. but using the LOSP, you will only be able to practice in the state that you obtained the license.
