Stuff we use:
CAMERA - This is the camera we have used to film 90+% of our interviews (over 200 interviews and counting) It continues to be our workhorse - amzn.to/2u66V1J
LENS - Most people ask us what camera we use, no one ever asks about the lens which filmmakers always tell us is more important. This lens was a big investment for us and one we wish we could have made sooner. Started using this lens at the end of 2013 - amzn.to/2tbtmOq
AUDIO
Rode VideoMic Pro - The Rode mic helps us capture our backup audio. It also helps us sync up our audio in post amzn.to/2t1n2hx
Audio Recorder - If we had to do it all over again, this is probably the first item we would have bought - amzn.to/2tbFlM9
LIGHTS - Although we like to use as much natural light as we can, we often enhance the lighting with this small portable light. We have two of them and they have saved us a number of times - amzn.to/2u5UnHv
COMPUTER - Our favorite computer, we each have one and have used various models since 2010 - amzn.to/2t1M67Z
EDITING - We upgraded our editing suite this year and we’re glad we did! This has improved our workflow and the quality of our work. Having new software also helps when we have a problem, it’s easy to search and find a solution - goo.gl/56LnpM

I really don't think anyone should go the AD route to becoming a director. It has to be clearly stated that becoming an assistant director does not lead to becoming a director. Does it happen? Yes. Of course, it happens but very very rarely. Being an AD is a communicative, logistical, even administrative job, an AD does everything a Director doesn't do and doesn't want to even think about. It uses a different part of your brain. A 4th AD or trailer AD, a 3rd AD, a 2nd AD....none of them work close to set, they don't even get a chance to observe a director working. A 3rd sometimes gets close and certainly can direct background performers but most of the time they're wrangling cast, 3rd ADs feel like babysitters half the time. Honestly, a 1st AD is the only one on set in the action. It's a long gruelling road that no one should aspire to take if they want to be a director. Be a - camera assistant, a script supervisor, a grip or electric...even set decorator. Work on set. Not locking up a street corner or on a laptop at basecamp. Work in departments that revolve around the craft of filmmaking - camera, art, G&E. Work in post -learn to edit. But most importantly make films. I know this is just one guy's journey but I'm telling you, I worked as an AD for years it's a brutal job for creatives. Your right brain sleeps while your left brain works overtime on 4hrs sleep. So if you start the journey of set PA to Director in 2021 ...good luck.

Thank you so much for your comment. I am at a roadblock in my career as a filmmaker/director/writer. I was led to believe that going the AD route was the way to becoming a TV Director. However, this year when I was on sets working as background, I spoke with a 2nd 2nd and he said going the AD is not the way to go. I started asking others in the industry and they said the same thing. Tonight I see your comment and it is crystal clear. I’m a creative. Yes I know the logistics of filmmaking because I produce my own short films but I am at a point in my career where I just want to direct. One of my short films I was able to hire a FULL TEAM and it was the first and only time I got to experience being JUST a director. As an independent filmmaker, I wear all the hats during pre-production, filming, and post. That particular time I had a team, it was pure bliss. I was more focused on just directing. I applied to the NBC Launch TV Director program this year and didn’t get in so I’m back to trying to figure out and network how to get to the next step. I’m still going the film festival route and I will keep pushing until I get my break. Thanks again for your input. I truly appreciate it. 🙏🏾🥹

What does Brendan's journey to being a director teach you? Well, you've got to break a few eggs to make an omelet...plus the dirty dishes just don't wash themselves.

Something I found consistent with most directors (and writers) that are interviewed on this channel and that’s that you HAVE to create something good and get it seen in festivals (it’s not enough to just work up the ladder)

I’m thinking of making a short series type show, mostly high fantasy. But I have no idea where I would get the contacts for any of this, since I want it to be live action, I have almost everything written down though, still working out the kinks in the rough draft. Also who would I have to talk to in FIU so I could have this as a minor, I’m thinking of having as my second major.
