How do I convince my parents that the acting industry isn’t as dangerous as they think it is?
@TheActorsAcademy
@TheActorsAcademy 14 күн бұрын
Well there are pros and cons to any industry. Some lean more one way than others and some may not. My first question that I’d ask to answer this question specifically, is which dangers do you believe exists and which’s do not?

The mains concerns are harassment, if it’ll affect my academics, and too much pressure since the industry is very competitive.

If these are the concerns of your parents (are there more?) and you disagree (meaning if you agreed there wouldn’t be any need to convince). Can you explain why harassment is not an issue, how it does not effect academic work, and how there is not too much pressure?

@@camivilla-esquer2823 parents care about their children, which is why they of course have hesitant about the entertainment industry. First we must know the facts: 1. Harassment -One in five entertainment industry women reported that they were sexually harassed at some point during their careers. -Children in the entertainment industry do experience sexual harassment or assault as well. Studies have shown that 1 in 5 young girls and 1 in 20 young boys are the victim of child sexual harassment and abuse. RESOURCE LINK: www.redbanklegal.com/practice-areas/sexual-harassment-in-the-workplace/sexual-harassment-in-the-entertainment-industry/#:~:text=Sexual%20Harassment%20Statistics&text=One%20in%20five%20entertainment%20industry,sexual%20harassment%20in%20their%20lives. 2. Academic -Even when the work schedule allows child performers to attend traditional schools on a somewhat regular basis, they often feel isolated or even get bullied due to their different social status (Sharf, 2023). In combination with frequent and prolonged absence and exhaustion due to physically and emotionally demanding jobs, this makes traditional education a serious challenge for child performers. RESOURCE LINK: www.humanium.org/en/realities-of-the-entertainment-industry-in-the-usa-child-performers-and-their-right-to-education/ 3. Industry Competitive -two-thirds of actors wash out after their first year of acting. -If rejected, many experience self-doubt, a low sense of self-esteem, and a lack of confidence. It is also common for entertainers to feel overwhelmed. When they do find work, they are required to spend long hours on set, they do not work a 9 to 5 schedule, and they miss out on spending time with family and other important relationships. RESOURCE LINK: www.backstage.com/magazine/article/what-percentage-of-actors-make-it-76897/# harbormentalhealth.com/2022/06/10/mental-health-and-the-entertainment-industry/ Now if these are yours/your parents concerns it’s very important to know all the facts. Your parents are not wrong for having worries. They’re job is to look after their children and these factors exist within the entertainment industry. People don’t speak about it enough though, so no one ever truly knows. So what does this mean for someone pursuing this industry. It means you should be completely aware of the facts and acknowledge how you will deal with them: For #1 in terms of harassment; always have a parent around. Do not be alone on set or in a closed room with another adult unless the parent is with you. Many of these situations can be avoided with your guardian by your side. It also requires the actor to speak up and make clear what is not okay. It’s not always easy to do, but that’s the kind of personality one needs. 2. For your education. It can really depend. Sometimes individuals will have more issues than other. Getting tutors and have a strong support group can be very helpful in these situations. 3. Extreme pressure in this industry. Most actors do not make it. This doesn’t mean one can’t give it a go, but if you look at auditions as something to do for fun rather than I need to book this and make it as a big actor, you end up putting yourself in a much better position and you don’t come across as needy during your auditions. So did you see what I did through all this? I identified what the issues I have are (that being the examples you gave) and then I worked out possible solutions. Actors parents are not bad people, they just happen to know more about what this industry brings. So again in short, I don’t tell people to just give up or pursue acting, rather I give the facts, then possible solutions to the issue, than it is ultimately up to the individual to make the final the decision and choices for their path. Wishing the best! 👍🏼👍🏼 hope this was insightful/helpful…
