I think it's super weird that people act like minimalism is a privlege. It's an excellent option for low income households. I agree the aesthetics are nice, but the true primary purpose is conservation. That can mean conserving the environment , money, space, all of the above. Everyone can choose to consume less, which is all it's really about
@SagaJohanna

Yes totally agree! I’m not sure either. I think people just try so hard to hold on to their desire to consume without responsibility !

I agree but I think it’s in part because it’s being touted as a new “movement” when many low income households and even other cultures have been minimal by necessity. I think the true indication of ‘privilege’ is the bloat and overconsumption as well as the industries dedicated to the maintenance of ‘stuff’
@katytown

@@mamat1213 I find that (like most problems) this is a multidimensional issue. The younger generations are brought up to "shop" as an activity, way to relieve anxiety, make themselves "prettier", etc rather than what was originally only supposed to be for necessities. And with the outsourcing of labor, all income levels are able to buy in a way that wasn't accesible before. Shopping has become an addiction and/or replaced going outdoors, connecting with others, etc. There is also overwhelm because people don't know where to start (my problem) when they have been a certain way for so long.

If you really feel the need to consume, consume a service instead of buying an object. Get a massage or a facial, hire a personal trainer, hire someone to clean your house or do your yard work.

I found your site a couple of weeks ago. Since then there have been 3 or 4 purchases I was going to make and stopped myself. I used to practice minimalism years ago but kind of fell away from it. Now I'm inspired to get back to it. I know it will take me a while to sort though my stuff and decide what to get rid of. But stopping unnecessary purchases is something I can do right now.

I've been doing this since I left the family house....I started minimalism when I started living in my place....when I had my kids I made them a lot of their clothing . Now my children are adults and have their own kids....and they respect nature so they are ecological and minimalists.

Hi. I was born and raised in a place, and time that we reuse almost everything. You said to give away the bath towels, when they are not good. I learned that we can use them as bath rug or a cleaning rag, depending on the condition of the towel 😊

Everything you say in this video is so true. For I while I tried to find my "consumerist profile" ("I will buy less of this but I will put more money into that") but I always felt weird and uncomfortable acquiring things I wanted but didn't really need. (And I have never even been a hug consumerist!) Since I decided I didn't need much, I feel much happier and calmer. And your videos reinforce that path. Thank you for expressing yourself so clearly and truthfully!

Well said and so true.❤ Unfortunately people in advertising are brilliant and usually do their job well.😢 While I was trying to find a way to “treat” my illness, FMS/CFS, I discovered I was a minimalist at my core. That happened before minimalism was a real word in the western world. My mother is Japanese and most Japanese do you live as minimalist dude. As most people know their homes are very small and they do not fill them with things that do not add value to their life. They buy things of high-quality and timeless style. That is simply their way of life. Even though I grew up poor I realized very early in life that money isn’t easy to come by. One has to be very careful of what they purchase and why they purchase it. Because I am disabled with FMS and CFS I have been trying to make my home calm, without “stuff” filling my home that adds nothing to my stresses. Unfortunately I have been trying for three years to have my kitchen remodeled. The cabinets were literally falling off the walls since they were over 30 years old and poor quality. In the western world it is difficult for a woman to get quality workmanship from any tradesmen. It’s simply a man’s world and if I didn’t have my son to speak for me I wouldn’t be able to get quality work. Even my son is finding this to be difficult because he looks much younger than his age of almost 40. My son looks like he’s in his early 20s. He hast to talk to me first before he talks to our contractors in order to sound like he knows what he’s doing and what he’s talking about. My goals are simple: *my home to be calm without clutter. *never buy anything I don’t REALLY need. *keep my home easy to clean even with my disability *when I die my home will be easy to clean out for my son and he can keep only what he finds to be valuable to him. *to keep my home calm, clean but inviting without “stuff”. *to keep my home that will give me no stress, help my physical, mental and emotional well-being. Right now my home looks like a storage unit filled with boxes from my kitchen and dining room. As well as cleaning out the bedrooms during this time of remodeling. That’s a slow process due to my illness but I will get there, God willing. 🙏🏻💖🎉 Thank you for your videos!❤❤❤

Thank you for another insightful video. The donate with respect tip is so important. I spent many years helping newcomers to my country. These newcomers were mostly refugees, international students and temporary foreign workers. Part of what I did was to accept donations of clothing, furniture, household items, school supplies, etc. that could be offered to these newcomers. There were very few people who donated respectfully. I feel like I could write a book on people and their stuff. There were a few people who made sure that their donated items were clean and useable but most people did not do this. I spent hundreds of hours laundering and cleaning donated items as well as sifting through to dispose of items that were truly garbage. There were things that were broken, things that were heavily soiled, very outdated technology and on and on it went. I think that the prevailing attitude was that those who were donating just wanted their stuff out of their space and at the same time wanted to feel good about themselves by donating to people in need.

thank you for this video it help me clarify some stuff , I am a compulsive declutterer and just throw things then buy things without even thinkinb minimalism or anything it just got to the point thag Im disguisted with the cycle of waste time and money and also bothers me having stuff I dont need and I am learning more about my self that expirienced based life is the best wah than focusing on the material things Im also slowly going through low waste life not kinda zero waste but in a realistic way , I would like to suggest minimalism with colors !

Hi! Do you have any recommendations for dealing with others (negative) opinions in regards to a minimalist home? I have had people call my home "sterile", tell me to get more rugs and hang more paintings on the wall. What are your thoughts on people not finding my home "cozy"? Thanks! I love your videos.

Haven't seen The True Cost but now I'm really curious so I'm going to see where I can find it. I don't exactly have any rules, but I just buy if I really need something. For example: I needed really soft and comfortable bras last summer after I removed my breast implants. The bras I now have are of good quality and they'll last a very long time. What I do need though is a pair of nice shoes if going to a nice restaurant. I did have a pair before but my feet has changed (an age thing I do believe), but I can't wear them anymore. So I've sold them. But finding nice shoes that are comfortable and versatile isn't easy. I've been looking since early spring. Lol! Great tips and points! 👍👍👍💗🌹

Yes, I think you’re gonna love it. It’s the best documentary I’ve ever seen. I’m not sure where one can find it though… maybe Netflix? Yes, I do that too. I bought 10 pairs of underwear and decided to buy really good quality since all mine were breaking haha. Oh nice shoes are hard to find. I quite like “clogs” and ballerina shoes. But what I find annoying about shoes is that they break so quickly! Even when buying good quality ones… if you find some you’ll have to let me know what brand you went with!

I applaud your commitment to sustainable living. I also agree with many of your philosophies. However, there is one rule that you set that I do not agree with. That is regarding the line you have drawn between companies that you believe to be fast fashion and those companies that you believe are not fast fashion. I have worked in retail for more than 33 years. Almost 13 of those years, I worked with sustainability for a large retail company. The one thing that I can assure you of, regardless of where you believe they fall on your spectrum is that all companies have a goal to sell products. They also have a goal to sell more products each year than they did the previous year. Some of them are just better at marketing their sustainability achievements. All of the companies you mentioned as fast fashion have very aggressive sustainability goals. Most have been working towards those goals before many of the companies you believe are not fashion fashion existed. I am not saying that they are perfect by any means. What I am saying is that no company is all good or all bad and you should not be so quick to draw a line in the sand. Actually, based on what I know many of the "fast fashion" companies you refer to are probably actually further ahead in their sustainability actions than the ones who advertise what they do really well. One day, I will have to conduct that study and publish it. Anyway, all I can do is to encourage you to do more research as you have in other areas before you direct your spending power.

Thank you for these tips. What do you mean by saying minimalism enriches you spiritually please? For example, an atheist can pare down all their belongings as much as possible and yet have no spiritual change.
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna Жыл бұрын
Thank you! Well, I have a lot of thoughts on this so I hope I can cover it all ✨ An atheist can still be spiritual. But that doesn’t really matter. But the act of living with less means less distractions. Less distractions means more time to discern between absolute truth vs. conceptual reality. Less possessions mean less ego, less attachment, less being stuck in concepts and norms. As we move outside of what everyone else is doing and realize that there is no value in our stuff, that we can’t take it with us when we die, ultimately this should help our spirituality. However, many people do things out of ego, or status or attachments . And for them, minimalism might just be another belief. But if one keeps examining their questions and beliefs, and doesn’t get lost in their stuff, then I think minimalism really fast tracks one’s spirituality 🤍
