I never thought that buying less and reducing clutter could change my life in so many ways, even for my mental health and regular day to day life.

I loved seeing your beautiful surroundings. Thank you for sharing them and yourself with us. There's a chance our materialism and fast paced life is leading to so much mental health disorder and crisis. Seeing someone as young as you are, finding a way out is fabulous. I really appreciate your videos.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE this video. Thank you, Saga, for sharing your ideas here. Your earlier suggestion to stop buying has been one of the most influential things for me in the last year. Thanks to you, I started a no-buy-year one year ago and have just completed it. Though I was already aiming for minimalism before that, it was too easy to fall into what I call the "spark joy trap": looking at what I own, wondering if it "sparks joy" and then 'decluttering' it and getting a "better" equivalent! A vicious cycle. Not buying, wherever possible, is a much more peaceful way to live! Some of my favourite ideas from this video: (a) when we're minimalist, we can't rely on things to tell the story of who we are; (b) there's a deep sense of freedom in owning less; it allows us to change and move more freely; (c) getting rid of things is easy; not replacing things is where it becomes more difficult. So true. Thank you, Saga!

Oh wow, thank you so much! And that makes me so extremely happy to hear!!! I completely agree with you, and I love the “spark joy trap”! That’s exactly how I felt in the beginning of my journey. Thinking if I “declutter” some random items I can buy a new “better” item!

So wise and gentle! Your words reflect well who you are, from all the videos I've watched of you. The life with less stuff is a clear win-win situation. A win for us personally, in lots of ways, as you describe here, but also for the world and all the living things in it, as you also explain. The only loss is to the unsustainable capitalist worldview that only through 'growth' can we stay functional, where growth ultimately leads to our own destruction. You change the world by expressing your wisdom. Thanks for that!

Thank you for this beautiful video. It made me smile and laugh, especially when you fed the fruit to the animals. I am currently re-reading a book, How the News Makes Us Dumb. You described something mentioned in this book, and that is the pressure the News puts on us to try to be a certain kind of person, to find satisfaction in buying things, to worry, and to be unsatisfied with ourselves and our surroundings. That is not the fault of the News - it is out fault. They are just trying to sell us a product. We don't have to buy or consume it. We need to take the steps you mentioned, and that should apply to what we read, watch, and listen to. Also, you gave some excellent positive steps to take. Just being still and quiet is one that I have been practicing lately.

0:46 How interesting, those are tulip poplar leaves (Liriodendron tulipifera) you're walking through on the ground. And that is a nice-sized tulip poplar tree at 4:28 . Tulip poplars are native to eastern North America, they're one of my favorite trees. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised to see one, since the Kiwis are known to have brought a lot of different plants and animals with them to New Zealand, but it was just fun to see one like that all of a sudden in your video! 😊 🌳

I liked this video a lot-thank you - I want to comment on the word minimalism (firstly it's really just an awareness and response to too much maximalism in our lives) as you're showing hear it fosters perhaps a more gentle life-and circles back to you/me/us without the constant distractions- "what do we need to make us happy?" what is the correct amount? -when buying things there will always be the next thing needed

@@SagaJohanna that's probably the first time in my life I heard that clothes do not define us or express much about us and I'm still pondering it... It's so true. The body positivity movement is out there, but it still much within the consumerist current (and often misused by the large corporations). The fashion industry is too strong to allow the messages of not caring about what you're wearing to be widespread.
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna Жыл бұрын
@@NataliaCopeland Yes, I completely agree. It's something recent for me to, but something that feels very true to me. Although I love beauty in all aspects of my life, I don't want beauty to come at the price of consumerism. And completely agree on the fashion industry. I read a great article re "plus size" and why overweightness is becoming just as popular as super skinny models. The writer spoke about how it was extreme and that is great marketing, despite the average woman being size 10. Why don't we see size 10 models? Because it doesn't sell! So important to remember that they're just trying to sell products.

You have such a wonderful way with the words of your thoughts. Truly a beautiful way to look at your life. ❤ The way that minimalism has supported your mental and physical health, and well-being. We are going into summer here. 92° F today, so it was very quieting to see your fall colors, fruits and puppy. I will be cooking up the last of my last season apples tomorrow. I think apple butter, a thick cooked apple sauce with cinnamon, cloves and nutmeg used like a jam. My grandmother used a lot of sugar making her apple butter, but I like the simpler way leaving the sweetness and tartness of the apples to shine. Thank you for a lovely visit with you my dearest. Your 🇺🇲Grandma. ❤

@@SagaJohanna Yes, it is used like jam, putting it on bread, toast, English muffin, ect. It is simple to make, but requires a ton of "stirring" as it scorches to the pan easily as it becomes thick. I'm sure there are a number of recipes on KZbin or on internet. If not, let me know and I will send one.

You are very fortunate to be able to live in such a beautiful place. Being able to enjoy the good things in life is, sadly, a luxury. Where I am, to purchase land, to care for animals, to own a home, are all painfully out of reach - would require a great deal of wealth to acquire.
@SagaJohanna

I feel like this persepctive is left out too much in the minimalist conversation. it becomes too much about "you will spend all your time cleaning and fixing things if you are not a minimalist so you should have a 10 item wardrobe" which doesn't apply to all anyway - you can have alot of stuff and not necessarily clean more or break your things more often, so it's not really a motivating reason to be minimalist in my mind. I like how you spoke more about what living in a constant state of desire is doing to our mental health. how it goes against the free and fluid way we could be living.
@SagaJohanna
@SagaJohanna Жыл бұрын
I agree. I think we can be minimalist maximalists. A lot of people can curate beautiful homes , and I've visited many of them, and be the most ethical by being responsible, using second hand and being thrifty. I like how you said it, yes, the desire I find one of the main things that has helped me with my mental health. Minimalism, or rather not shopping - not reaching, is helping me find space to soothe myself instead of shopping.
