A year ago this month I was at the end of my rope, stuck in a nihilistic gutter. I reached out to God and literally prayed "God, I don't believe in you, but help my unbelief." I was filled with an other-worldly peace. My heart started to slowly change. This last year has been a challenge, but God continues to draw me closer to him and his church. I pray to St. Thomas a lot to help me with doubts and he has helped me many times. These videos also help a lot!

I remember a couple weeks before I became a Christian, I tried to pray to God to alleviate some extreme OCD I was going through. It was a truly supernatural experience because my tongue got super tied as I tried to think of a mundane trade with God for Him to have mercy on me. I at that moment realized I’m undeserving and would need to give myself for such a thing. It’s kind of amazing the things you will find if you turn to God even if you don’t believe.

I heard that when you wanna come towards The Light or God trials will start happening as a tests. The bible says that for gold to be purified has to go through the oven. A more easter way if seeing it is that when you wanna start your work on your illumination or eliberation you will start paying for you karma ( actions ) or maybe realise that. It's important to understand the point of Christianity, and yes we all live in modern day times so we all had a more epicurian or materialistic view of reality. As we see the negatives from religions we should also see the negatives from a secular worldview. It annoys me when judgement goes biasedly only towards one way.

My beloved brother in Christ, this is sign that you are in a good path. I was exactly in the same situation. Since one month I had a lot of thoughts of doubt just before becoming novice in Mont Athos. It’s been two weeks I’m there. And when you realize it comes from the devil and not from you, just laugh at him and simply pay no attention. The more you give attention, the more you have and vice versa. It’s been one week I don’t have any. But even when I had these thoughts, I literally felt the love of Christ in my heart. It is a trial from God to strengthen your faith and to learn that spiritual things happen in the heart, not in the mind who is corrupted and sick. To do this require some violence to your mind because you are acting against what you believe your own self, but this is illusion from devil. And little by little, it will disappear and you will have a stronger faith than before as well as a deeper love for Christ ! I hope this will help you, may God help you

To keep in mind as well, is that even most believers have at least a mustard seed of unbelief in them. A little voice that mocks and says "What if you've spent all this time for nothing!" I have been lucky enough in my life to have had experiences I can't ignore and I can't turn away from, but I'd very much like my belief to be centered around the seemingly mundane day to day goings on rather than anything super natural I have no worldly explanation for. These doubts must not be shied away from but opened up and examined as to not repress them and let them out explosively. I do feel bad for atheists who want to believe in God, if there are any. To them I agree with you, they should first and foremost humble themselves and pray. They're atheists after all, if they pray every day for 15 seconds just to ask for some faith, how would this harm them to begin with? It is most definitely worth a try.

I realize that this is tangential to the subject of this video but I think the one criticism of Christianity that's endured the test of time pertains to Christ's prophecy about his own Second Coming and the events surrounding it in Matthew 24:1-34, where he concludes his sermon by saying, "this generation will not pass away until all these things take place." I realize that the church has offered various interpretations of this passage, intending to explain why this has yet to happen but the fact that it's been over 2,000 years is not something that can be easily dismissed, particularly when you consider that each generation subsequent to Christ's sojourn on Earth has considered itself to be the last, ours being no exception. Your thoughts on this would be appreciated.

If you believe that Christ meant a Second Coming with fire and brimstone and all that jazz, then you are right; Revelations has more details on that fun. However, he meant here that the Kingdom of God would be established with the very generation of men and women who walked alongside him; that is, all the events after his Resurrection up to Pentecost, or the Spirit descending as tongues of fire on the believers. See, even the Jews believed the Messiah's eternal kingdom was going to be an Earthly one, destroy the Romans and establish Israel forever. As God so loves to do, he never said it would be a *physical* Kingdom. "The Kingdom of God is within you." You already live in the Messianic Age, in the age of the Kingdom of God on Earth. It is not a place; it is a people. It is the Church of believers. As a fun aside, the concept of a Rapture or a Time of Tribulation is...very recent, in terms of heterodoxy. Orthodoxy does not really put much emphasis on end-times theology, since that does not lead to salvation to think of a physical reckoning. Your actions today are far more important than any eschatology, and if you remember your sins and repent with true contrition matter far more to your soul then theories. Read the Philokalia; the collected wisdom of many of the Orthodox fathers. See what they focused on instead, and ponder on it.

I think to look at the English translation is a fools errand to understand much of the Holy Bible. To answer your question, the word used in Matthew 24:34 for "this generation" is genea (γενεὰ).Who is this generation? Briefly stated, the tradition more or less equates the word genea with English ‘generation’. This may work in a few places, especially when the word occurs in the plural form, but in the phrase “this genea” it is misleading to use “generation.” It does not seem to agree with the meaning of the Greek phrase or the Hebrew behind it, and it does not make good sense in most places where the word occurs in the New Testament. Rather, genea means ‘a class of people bound together through a common origin or with a common bond.’ In certain contexts genea does have the very restricted sense of the English “generation,” but in most contexts it does not have this narrow sense. The English word “generation” has undergone a semantic shift so that the meaning today is very much narrowed down as compared to the Greek genea, the Latin generatio and “generation” in the English language as spoken when the King James translation was first made. Even the Vulgate translation used four different Latin words to translate genea, one of which is generatio. But the word generatio is used to translate other Greek words as well, for example, Matt 1:1 genesis (GNB: family record) and Luke 22:18 genēma (fruit). In Danish we have the word “generation” as a modern adopted word. It has the same area of meaning as the corresponding English word, but it is never used to translate genea in the New Testament. In English there is evidence that the area of meaning of “generation” has narrowed down considerably since the time of the KJV translation. The evidence is that the word gennēma ‘brood’ in Matt 3:7 is translated by “generation” in KJV as well as the word genos ‘race, people’ in 1 Pet 2:9. The Oxford Universal Dictionary gives the following, now obsolete (latest attested use 1727) sense of “generation”: “class, kind or set of persons.” The purpose of the above remarks was to show that the meaning of the Greek word genea is not at all equivalent to the modern English word “generation.” We shall now proceed to discuss what genea actually means. 1. The primary sense is ‘descendants, family, clan, that is, a group of people with a common ancestor’ (see for instance: New International Dictionary of New Testament Theology, 2.35). This primary sense occurs rarely in the New Testament. With the word in singular it occurs in Acts 8:33: “Who can describe his genea? For his life is taken up from the earth.” Both GNB (Good News Bible), JB (Jerusalem Bible) and NIV translate genea here by ‘descendants.’ The word occurs in plural in Matt 1:17 with a closely related sense of ‘succeeding sets of descendants, stages in a genealogy’ and is probably best translated generations: Matt 1:17 “So all the geneai from Abraham to David were fourteen geneai.” (1/2)
@LaudeturIesusChristos Жыл бұрын
(2/2) 2. The secondary sense is a natural extension of the first sense and can be stated thus: ‘a group of people with a common bond or characteristic; a certain class or type of people’. This sense is common in the New Testament. The Good News Bible (GNB) often translates it simply as “people.” The characteristic feature of the people referred to is in all cases drawn out from the context. I shall go through all New Testament occurrences of genea below (references in parentheses are to parallel passages). Luke 16:8: “The sons of this world are more shrewd in dealing with their own genea than the sons of light.” The important contextual clue to the characteristic of the group of people referred to is the word “own” which qualifies genea. Therefore, NIV, NEB (New English Bible) and JB have translated it as “dealing with [people of] their own kind.” The sense is “people like themselves in their worldliness” and not as J.B.Phillips puts it: “contemporaries.” Acts 2:40: “For he [Peter] testified with many other words and exhorted them, saying, “‘Save yourselves from this crooked genea’.” Here the contextual clue is “crooked.” GNB translates it reasonably well as “save yourselves from this wicked people.” The demonstrative “this” is anaphoric, referring back to the preceding context about the people who rejected the Messiah and nailed him to the cross (v. 36). A more meaning-based (idiomatic) translation of this verse might be: “Disassociate yourselves from those wicked people” or “Turn away from that kind of people, and be saved.” Phil 2:15: “that you may be...without blemish in the midst of a crooked and perverse genea.” The contextual clue to the characteristic feature of the group of people referred to is “crooked and perverse.” GNB translates: “in a world of corrupt and sinful people.” NLT (New Living Translation) has “a dark world full of crooked and perverse people.” Matt 17:17: (Mark 9:19; Luke 9:41) “O, faithless and perverse genea how long shall I stay with you?” Again the characteristic feature of the people referred to is shown by the qualifiers: faithless and perverse. Many commentators claim that the word genea has a pejorative character. This is reading the meaning of the contexts into the meaning of the word. This is what James Barr called “illegitimate totality transfer” (1961:218). Rather, the word genea in itself is neutral. The pejorative part of the overall meaning is supplied solely by the connotations of the context. GNB translates this verse as “How unbelieving and wrong you people are.” J.B.Phillips has: “You really are an unbelieving and difficult people.” NLT has “You stubborn, faithless people!” The actual reference is mainly to the disciples. Matt 12:39: (Mark 8:12; Matt 16:4; Luke 11:29) “Some of the scribes and Pharisees said to him, ‘Teacher, we wish to see a sign from you.’ But he answered them [scribes and Pharisees], ‘An evil and adulterous genea seeks for a sign...’ “ As usual, the characteristics of the people referred to is shown by the qualifiers: “evil and (spiritually) adulterous.” The actual reference is to those scribes and Pharisees who demanded signs but did not want to accept Jesus. In translating this passage, the GNB deviates from the pattern set by the examples quoted above. It says: “How evil and godless are the people of this day.” Nothing in the Greek text can justify the addition of the words “of this day.” Maybe the GNB translators had not realised at this point that genea is not the same as “generation”? Or maybe they were influenced by Matt 23:36 discussed below? CEV (Contemporary English Version) is better: “You want a sign because you are evil and won't believe!” Matt 23:36 (Luke 11:50): “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! (See v.23,25,27,29) Truly, I say to you, all this will come upon this genea.” Having seen the pattern from the examples above where genea in itself refers to a class or type of people and the qualifying word(s) and the context describe the characteristic feature of the people, it is natural to expect the qualifying word “this” to point to the characteristics of the group of people referred to. The first instance of “this” refers back to the punishment mentioned in verses 33 and 35 (judgment of hell and the blood of all the righteous). It seems most likely that the phrase “this genea” refers back to the group of people he has just been speaking about. Since this is probably a new thought to many people, I shall spell out some of the arguments in more detail. There are basically two possible interpretations of the meaning of the demonstrative in the phrase “this genea.” (1) Either it refers to the “people living now” in contrast to people living at another time in history or (2) it refers to something mentioned in the preceding linguistic context. Interpretation (1) is very difficult to reconcile with the basic meaning of the phrase tēn genean tautēn and it also does not fit well with the context. First, there is nothing in the context which supports an idea of temporal contrast. Second, nowhere else can the word “this” possibly be understood as meaning “living now.” Third, and most important, in ALL instances of the phrase “this genea,” the demonstrative follows the noun. As mentioned in section 1 of the full article referenced below, this means that the focus is on genea, not on “this.” If the expression had included a contrast between the generation of that time and any other generation, the word houtos should have preceded genea instead of following it. The second interpretation makes much better sense and is in accordance with the meaning attested to the words “this” and genea elsewhere, that is, “this” is a reference to something in the preceding linguistic context, and genea is a certain type of people. Now let us look at the context of Matt 23:36. The relevant context is 23:1-39. The whole chapter is one long description and denunciation of the practices of certain hypocritical “scribes and Pharisees” and their like. In verse 35 the reference is broadened to similar people in the past who killed the righteous people (with an obvious sting to the self-righteous Pharisees who would soon kill the righteous Jesus). In verse 37 it is broadened to the people of Jerusalem as representing those people who kill the prophets. Upon SUCH PEOPLE (‘this genea’) will come a great punishment (‘all these things’). A possible, more faithful translation of tēn genean tautēn in v. 36 might be “you and people like you.” Matt 24:34: (Mark 13:30, Luke 21:32) “Truly, I say to you [disciples], this genea will not pass away till all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.” This is one of the most difficult verses to interpret. Some have argued that the phrase “passing away” suggests that a temporal element is present in the sense of genea here. This does not sound convincing. The next verse says that “heaven and earth” will pass away, while “my words” will not pass away, but no one would suggest that “heaven,” “earth” and “my words” thereby acquire a temporal sense. The word “pass away” does not mean ‘to die’ as GNB suggests. The meaning is much broader and there is no restriction that the subject must be animate as there is in the word “to die.” It simply means “come to an end, cease to exist.” The most obvious meaning of the verse is that certain “things” will continue to exist, while other “things” will cease to exist. Heaven and earth will cease to exist (at least in the present form), but both “my words” and “this class of people” will continue to exist in spite of opposition and tribulation. It has been suggested that the phrase might refer to the Jewish people as a whole. This, too, I find rather unconvincing. Although the other instances of “this genea” do seem to refer to a group of the Jews, namely those who rejected Jesus as Messiah, this does not necessarily mean that “this genea” always has to refer to Jews. One important difference is that where it refers to the Jews who rejected Jesus, the context has very negative and judgmental connotations. But in this context, the connotations are positive. Whatever the reference is, that class of people will endure through tribulations. By parallelism, the phrase is closely connected to “my words” which is also positive and has endurance. Who would ensure that the words of Jesus were kept in existence through difficult times? It seems to me that “this genea” in this verse most naturally refers to the class of Christians keeping the word of God throughout the ages until the end of heaven and earth. This ties in well with the whole discourse of Matt 24 being directed to the disciples in private (v. 3) and the frequent use of the word “elect” to signify an important thematic participant in the discourse (v. 22,24,31). For a more complete answer, I'd suggest reading Dr. Ivar Larsens "Generation is a wrong translation choice for Greek genea" found here: www.academia.edu/37043228/Generation_is_a_wrong_translation_choice_for_Greek_genea Thanks for your comment, Praise be to Jesus Christ!

Great as always ❤ I have a question. What counts as apostasy, truly? Are there lesser forms of it? Aren’t I rejecting Christ whenever I sin? I ask this as a baptised person inquiring into Orthodoxy, worried that I have turned my back on Christ by sinning and by taking so long to join the Orthodox church after knowing about it and believing in Him. Any help is appreciated 😊

You can't apostasise until you willingly decide to leave and renounce Orthodoxy, so you can't do that one yet! Sin is a movement away from God and is basically spiritual illness, some is more dramatic and serious than others. You can't be moving towards and away from God simultaneously, look at the positives! That is why we are on a constant journey of repentance, which means moving towards God and becoming spiritually healthy. Confession is the start and continual means of repentance...... find a Priest and start your journey :)

You can still pray. Your desire for God that is naturally present in the heart of man will push your prayer. In the Bible passage you mentioned the man who called upon Our Lord didn’t believe, (as St John Chrysostom mentioned ) he says to Jesus “if you can do this then… » and that’s why Jesus said that anything is possible to him who believe. So You can still pray and fast even if you disbelieve just because you long to see God and then you will truly see him by the eyes of your heart the same way Thomas did when he touched Jesus’s Wounds. « Search and you will find, knock and the door will be opened to you ».

I personally have a bit of a problem with the idea of praying "lord I believe" when I as a matter of fact don't believe. It seems to me God would not reward such dishonesty.

Lord, I believe in You. Help my unbelief that you will do this. Once again, it is doubt that God really loves you as much as He says He does.
@gillianc6514 Жыл бұрын
As I see it you have 4 choices: (1) no prayer to no-god (logical), (2) prayer to no-god (absurd), (3) no prayer to God (what is the point in this if God is love and prayer is our relationship with the God of love), and (4) prayer to God (makes sense logically and in the heart). Of which only (1) and (4) make any sense at all. But is 'no-god' actually a god? Atheists have to keep professing their faith in no-god. My guess is no-god is actually a god, who demands loyalty, professions of faith, modes of behaviour etc. But love exists, beauty exists, courage, heroism and humility exist and there is absolutely no need for them. Is in not better to believe in the absurdity of a loving God in whose orbit these things are real and who is a friend of man, and to whom you can admit your dishonesty and still be loved and cherished?

Compare: John 5 Names of God Bible 37 The Father who sent me testifies on my behalf. *You have never heard his voice, and you have never seen his form.* with: Numbers 12 Names of God Bible 4 Suddenly, Yahweh said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “All three of you come to the tent of meeting.” So all three of them came. 5 Then Yahweh came down in the column of smoke and stood at the entrance to the tent. He called to Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 He said, “Listen to my words: When there are prophets of Yahweh among you, I make myself known to them in visions or speak to them in dreams. 7 But this is not the way I treat my servant Moses. He is the most faithful person in my household. *8 I speak with him face to face, plainly and not in riddles. He even sees the form of Yahweh.* Why weren’t you afraid to criticize my servant Moses?” 9 Yahweh was angry with them, so he left.

You're misunderstanding the Trinity. When YHWH speaks to humans, he does so through the Son Jesus Christ. Noone has seen or heard the Father because he is not abiding by the dimensions we live in. Remember, God the Father is above all dimensions because he commanded them into creation, but with YHWH's essence of the Son, he makes himself tangible dimensionally. There are other examples of when God does physical actions, such as when God walks in the Garden of Eden, JESUS is walking in the Garden, not God the Father. The mistake made is to assume all mentions of YHWH in the Bible are automatically God the Father, all physical actions or emotions felt by YHWH come from the Son, the Father is the All-Encompassing Incomprehensible essence of infinity, the Father does not do physical things. Thanks for uour comment and I apologize if im hard to understand I just woke up and still waking myself up haha

[Lions 🦁 and leopards 🐆 and bears 🐻,oh my!]: Revelation 13 Names of God Bible The Beast from the Sea 13 I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had ten horns, seven heads, and ten crowns on its horns. There were insulting names on its heads. 2 The beast that I saw was like a *leopard.* Its feet were like *bear’s* feet. Its mouth was like a *lion’s* mouth. The serpent gave its power, kingdom, and far-reaching authority to the beast. 3 One of the beast’s heads looked like it had a fatal wound, but its fatal wound was healed. All the people of the world were amazed and followed the beast. Hosea 13 Names of God Bible 4 “I am Yahweh your Elohim. I brought you out of Egypt. You have known no god besides me. There is no savior except me. 5 I took care of you in the desert, in a dry land. 6 When I fed you, you were full. When you were full, you became arrogant. That is why you forgot me. 7 So I will be like a *lion.* Like a *leopard* I will wait by the road to ambush you. 8 Like a *bear* that has lost her cubs, I will attack you. I will rip you open. Like a lion I will devour you. Like a wild animal I will tear you apart. 9 You are destroying yourself, Israel. You are against me, your helper.

I know he existed, he is a historically documented character outside of the bible. The fact most religions claim he existed does not sway me, but the references in Josephus and Tacitus do. I have no problem believing Jesus existed, I just don't agree he was my lord in saviour. I apologise if I gave offence, as all I was trying to do was make a lame pun to show that I personally do not share your belief. Hope that clarifies what I meant.@@hans_8048

@GnosticAtheist Жыл бұрын
@@iagoofdraiggwyn98 No, the gnostic God is not more easily understood. In fact, it cannot be understood, it does not exist yet it is the cause of all things. It does not think, it does not feel, yet it is the source of all. The idea of the abrahamic God is a human contruct to simplify, not the other way around. What you are thinking of is pluralistic ancient "gods", not the the attempts to understand the unthinkable.
