All BMW F01 and F10's suffer form the same problem. It's a platform issue but can be fixed more or less easily. If your 528, 535, 550, M5, 730, 740, 750 or 760 was diagnosed with a cracked differential mount, then this video will showcase how to change it yourself if you have at least a little experience screwing around on your car yourself. And while you are in there, take a look at your flex disc (guibbo) and maybe change it right away since they usually develop cracks as displayed in the video and need to be replaced at around 80k miles. The differential mount is due earlier at around 65k miles.
Let me know if you have any questions or constructive critique. Enjoy watching!

Very informative video👍 i noticed one thing tho. When pressing in the bushing in the back you shredded it while applying torque on it hence the fluid that came out. The back ones are fluid-filled.
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 6 ай бұрын
Maybe there are variance in the bushings but to the best of my knowledge they are just rubber and metal. Just got another new bushing last week (since it's been almost 60k miles on this bushing so of course it fails again) and it's not fluid-filled. I think what's been pushed out in the video is the WD-40 I used to lubricate the tool. You spray some on the threads to make it easier on the nut.

Just thinking about how to replace the rear differential bush. Would it be possible to cut the old bush out then pulling the new bush in without dropping the exhaust and differential?
@BONDGarage

@@johngilly2541 The diff is in the way. You'll have to drop it a little to make space for the tool. I also wouldn't recommend trying to cut the old bushing out. It may cause damage that could damage the new part. The pull tool is pretty straight forward and the best method of replacing a bushing.

The procedure shown in this video is exactly the same for the F06 640i GC. My 640 looks exactly the same as the F10 underneath. The heat shields even have F10/F11 stamped into them! I had the same issues with cracked differential mounts both rear & front along with a severely cracked Guibo. The cracked Guibo caused loud vibration in the cabin from the drive shift. This is a great DIY for us F06 owners too. Thank you @Bond Garage!!

Hi i did my f07 gt, didn't remove the exhaust just hung it on some large double ended ring spanners and moved the diagonal stiffners , i just lowered the diff. Made my own pulling and push kit. All done most from the back. Manual says remove the diff completely but this is just so labour adds up. I have a 535d 5er niw and its slit. You feel a thud on gear change when sprinting. Also i did the prop bearing....top tip makes sure you have the right bearing before you start that job. As this guy says match mark any rotating part locations. 👍
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. Always a pita to find out your part doesn't fit after you started taking things apart. Manual says to remove the diff so it's more ergonomic for the mechanic to work on as the company needs to provide somewhat decent working conditions. in reality it depends on the mechanic if they feel like removing the diff or simply lower it like we did. most will lower it and be done with it.

eventually the center piece of the bushing (which holds the bolt to the diff) will separate from the rest of the bushing. then it'll just flop around loosely. so it won't fall out but can cause damage to other drivetrain parts.

there are opposing arrows on the guibbo. the alternate. just need to make sure they point to a flange. as for the metal guibbo, I haven't seen them wearing out yet, but they may have to be replaced sometime. so if that part isn't available you can only use what BMW offers at this point. BMW in the early 2ks still had front and rear rubber guibbo. as long as it's installed correctly there shouldn't be a problem.

vibrations can have all kinds of causes. they can be pretty hard to identify. gumbos usually don't cause any vibrations. it's more like a clunk when it's worn out. center bearing could be a cause. you'd notice it coming from right under your center arm rest. could also be the tension struts on the front axle. they are known to go out sooner than later but I'm just shooting in the dark here..

Hi nice video. I have some questions when you replace the flex disc is it important to mark the diff flange and drive shaft flange that the flex disc sits between are the 2 seperate flanges balanced? Also do you know why the f10 seems to vibrate between 120 to 130kmh it seems to be common problem affecting the f10 chassis. Thanks
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 4 жыл бұрын
You don't have to mark the flanges. They aren't balanced against each other. For example, if you remove the entire drive shaft, usually you won't put it back exactly the same way and it doesn't matter anyway. I marked the bolts to make sure to complete the 90 degree angle. Just make sure that the arrows point towards the flange. Regarding the vibrations I haven't experienced that yet but it may also be because of the less than ideal street surfaces in LA. Usually such vibrations can be caused by wheels, brakes, play in wheel bearings or suspension components or center bearing of the drive shaft. Hope that helps

@@BONDGarage hi thanks for the reply. The reason i questioned the prop flange and diff flange needing to be marked was because of an article i seen i have posted the link www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/f10-520d-lim/repair-manuals/26-propeller-shaft/26-11-single-multiple-part-propeller-shaft/1VnY9r4jM5

It's always safe to follow TIS 👍🏻 I can't absolutely determine if those parts are balanced against each other but I can say that when I replaced or repaired diffs in the past (which doesn't happen very often) we never had to balance it against the propeller shaft. The reason why TIS, myself and most people will recommend to mark the position and assemble it as it was originally is simply: it worked before in that position so let's not mess around with it. Simply to reduce the chances of introducing an imbalance. However, that doesn't mean that it will definitely cause problems if you don't mark the position.

@BONDGarage

I don't, and hope to never have to do that. But in short: remove the left and right drive shafts and the flex disc, then loosen the mounts (2 small, 1 big) and the diff should fall right into your arms. Best of luck

you may be able to feel something in the drivetrain but since the roads here are pretty crap I can't nail it and just go of visual inspections. like the bushing I installed in this video is already gone by now. just lasted about 60k miles and now an entire arm is torn off.

Are the bolts single-use items? I have to do this job on my F02 and am wondering if I need replacement bolts in addition to the new flex disc and bushings?
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 3 жыл бұрын
Whenever it's a "stretch-bolt" (meaning you have to torque it and then give it a 90 degree turn), those are single use since it already has been stretched. All other bolts can be reused if there's nothing wrong with them. BMW will usually recommend to replace bolts and will do so when performing any repairs. Personally, I replace bolts within the powertrain for peace of mind.

avoiding catastrophic failure maybe? the E46 M3 was notorious for braking rear subframes. you didn't really notice until the entire axle broke out. that's why you perform inspections to catch problems before they cause headache. you could also drive until things turn bad but usually that causes more damage so personally I recommend preventative maintenance.

How long did it take you to change the mount?
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Takes way longer when you try to film and explain 😄 Changing the rubber mount itself shouldn't take you more than an hour once the car is in the air. And that's inclusive quite some breaks you will have to take as you tire pulling it out and squeezing it in. Drop the exhaust, remove the heat shield and the diff and off you go. You can comfortably finish within 2 hours all together.

@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Daniel. I had literally no symptoms at all. At least nothing noticeable. Just know that the F10 and F01 platforms have that problem and I noticed the cracked bushing upon visual inspection. A quick look brings clarity. If your F01 shows rough gear changes at times, it can be only a few things. How many miles does it have on the clock? Have transmission- and differential-oil ever been changed? Check on the condition of flex disk and driveshaft center bearing. Diff bushings could be a reason. Transmission- or motor mounts could be possible as well. I remember seeing a thread on a bimmer forum like that as well. That may help narrow it down.

Hi i have some questions when you replace the flex disc is it important to mark the shaft flange and the differential flange that the flex disc sits between or does it not matter in terms of balance. Also do you know about the bibration issue that affects alot of f10 cars where they vibrate arounf 120kmh? Thanks
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 4 жыл бұрын
The drive shaft and rear diff are not balanced as a system. So you can put it back together without marking the exact position it was in originally. But if you want to make 100% sure you install back to what it was before, feel free to mark the shafts and you can sleep peacefully :) As for the vibration issue, i'm not sure what may cause that at the moment but let me know if you find something out about it.

Is the flex disc sided as in does it have an orientation because one side has writing on it and the other side is blank

@ismxil.1
@ismxil.1 4 жыл бұрын
@@nameaftername367 can you prove this statement?
@BONDGarage
@BONDGarage 4 жыл бұрын
@Name Aftername is right about that. The disc has 6 holes for the bolts to pass through. Inside, hidden by all the rubber, pairs of 2 of these pass-through holes are connected by fabrics to strengthen the disc. These reinforcements help keeping the disc together when driving forward. When reversing, the torque is transferred by rubber only but since we drive forward most of the time that's fine. When it comes to installing the disc, it does matter to install it right, which is with the arrows on the disc pointing towards the flange that it is bolted to. If you mount the flange in between arrows it would be in its "reverse" position which would wear it out extremely fast (unless you are reversing 99% of the time), but you would see that something is off because you would have to force the disc into this position and it wouldn't look straight after installation. As for the writing on the disc, think about it, it's a symmetrical part and every second hole has an arrow on one side while the arrows on the "backside" are right in between. So if you flip it around you are good as long as you keep all arrows pointing towards its flange on each side.
@ismxil.1
@ismxil.1 4 жыл бұрын
@@BONDGarage yes so what your saying is the that the writing part does not have to face a certain way? I fitted mine with the writing face the rear of the car but the arrows are facing the flanges so is that ok?

The oil was only to lubricate the nut of the tool like shown in the video. If you have some tire mounting paste, that's what I would recommend if you want to lubricate the actual rubber mount. Will make it easier to pull in and will dissipate fast.

@@M-1453 since the bolts on the flex disc are "stretch bolts" you need to replace them. replaced them all with hex bolts. those are the only ones you can order on bmw parts pages. appears that they unified the bolts. regarding exhaust, I reused all bolts and nuts that hold the exhaust in place. there is no gasket after the post cat so nothing to replace here.
