Sweet Jesus, don’t put alcohol on leather. It immediately dries it out, and if you don’t condition it right after, it will destroy them. What I do is run a quality leather conditioner in, then steal my wife’s hair dryer long enough to heat them up with my hands in, and put my hands in varying positions that stretch them out a bit.

@thagingerninjer5391
@thagingerninjer5391 Жыл бұрын
@@718_JH_Moto yeah, I use chemical brothers leather cleaner and leather conditioner on my leather gloves, boots, and suit. I even clean my suit by turning it inside out, and washing it in the washing machine with a really mild castille soap. Then I’ll let it dry for a few days, conditioning it four or five times over that period. Not drying out the leather is pretty important, because it never goes back to where it was before. I learned that growing up on a farm, and cleaning saddles my whole life.
@silverio5778
@silverio5778 Жыл бұрын
Will that work on one-piece race suits?
@thagingerninjer5391
@thagingerninjer5391 Жыл бұрын
@@silverio5778 my suit is a one piece, and I’ve had no problems with it at all. It’s 7 or 8 years old now, and the leather is soft af. I take all the armor out, turn it inside out, and wash it on the gentle cycle on cold. Leather is fine getting wet. What you don’t want to do is use regular laundry detergent. You want something that’s ph neutral. Leather is slightly acidic naturally, so using regular detergent that is alkaline will draw all the oils out of the leather. I use Dr bronner’s castille soap, because I have it on hand for gardening most of the time. Make sure you have a good conditioner for it, and condition twice a day the first couple days, then once the last day, and again once it’s completely dry. Never use saddle soap on leather, despite it being made for it.

You do put them in water and use them. Then you do a few more times getting them soaked. Then you leave them in the garage to dry a few days. Then you dunk them in water and put them on and use them. They will definitely form your hand. I’ve soaked mine in oil before because I didn’t have water. Those gloves had that worn look and was my favorite. I still have them but they are in my truck and I don’t use them. I use my new pair that are black. I wear leather for the Harley

My rule of thumb is by the tighter fitting glove and break them in… if you go with the right size at first you will have too much room and the glove with fit baggy… and that’s no good. Leather stretches out…So get the tighter fitting glove and stretch them out to your hand.

Soaking in water or alcohol is horrid for leather. Been making leather goods for a decade. The only leather that should see water is veg tan that is being stamped or carved. Period. Get them uncomfortable, like you said. Leather conditioner (not oil) on all surfaces, sparingly. Treat it like a baseball glove or a new gun holster. Wear them hard. As much as possible. They will break in and not be damaged.

Clean the gloves, heat them up to expand the pores of the leather, oil them _heavily,_ and let the oil soak in. For gloves and boots, my favorite tool is an indoor-heating radiator. Just set them on top for a bit, buff in way too much oil (I use a mink oil blend that comes as a tin of paste), and put them back on the radiator. Sometimes, especially when new, it actually takes several applications. Pay extra attention to any seams and overlaps. Once the oil no longer soaks in, let your gloves or boots cool to room temperature before rubbing off any remaining excess. Give 'em a nice buff and repeat about monthly. Works great on work and dress boots, too, to either get a soft shine or to condition before applying a hard wax polish.
