What trapped me into my phone addiction was that I mostly consume "valuable" content. So long time I had the feeling, that watching one video or short after another was not a bad thing or even had a value, if there was something to learn from it. What a bs. Educational or motivational videos are completely worthless, when you go directly to the next one instead of implementing the lesson, that you could take away from it. But it took me so long to realize this, that I was already on a point, where it was extremely hard, to break that habit.

I just did a two week cleanse, no social media but KZbin (I use it to watch videos like this, it’s about learning not entertaining) and it felt so good. Now Twitter feels too conflictive, too messy and negative. Instagram feels too materialistic, too empty. I like social media but I see myself using it less and less.
@Lostintrepid2 жыл бұрын
KZbin is a really hard habit to break. Especially because people try to classify it as different to social media. Sure it's not social media, but it does have infinite scroll, and has the same incentives as social media - to keep you on the platform as long as possible for ad revenue. So its just as addictive. The same goes for things like Reddit.

Lately I place my cellphone in a see through plastic container with a sealed lid. On top of that I put a sticky note that reads "control". This enables me to see what comes in and reinforces my willpower. The voice mail takes care of calls and notifications will always be there. Check your phone on breaks, every 2- 3hours for 10-15 minutes. You can survive without your smartphone, just be more intentional about when you use it. I also noticed my daughter would be constantly trying to get my attention and it was getting increasingly hard to focus on her. And at the end of the day, she's the only one that matters. Another method that works really well is to uninstall the app and instead add a shortcut to the website to your homescreen. Usually the websites just aren’t as comfortable to use as the apps, so this added discomfort keeps you from wanting to use the site as much and you won’t use it for as long. Worked really well for me to get out of my Twitter addiction.

@Scarshadow666 Жыл бұрын
That's very true! Though I think something else to keep in mind that being aware of the core of where the addictions come is one thing, but it's another thing entirely to really fix the core itself (especially if you're not really certain whether or not it's something you want fixed or not). In my experience, I know that my electronic addiction has come from a mixture of aimlessness (while I'm job-searching, I also have a lot of free time to browse compared to when I was in college, and I've been hoping a job will get me back on a set schedule), and from pressure of keeping connected with my friends. I've had experience (back when smartphones were slowly getting more introduced societally) where an anxious friend mine opened up about fears of what if I and/or our other friends were purposefully ignoring them if we didn't respond to a text right away (they still had a flip-phone at the time, though I don't know if they've ever upgraded). I don't keep much contact with that friend anymore, but I've found I still carry a nervous habit that I need to respond to texts immediately after my experience with my anxious friend (especially since a lot of my other friends now have varying degrees of anxiety themselves too).

For me, if I'm on the computer, I can just open up a document and write. If I don't have a computer, I have a paper and pen and brainstorm, it helps organise the jumbled thoughts in your head and gives you a bit of a hit that you've made progress on your thoughts or project. Meditation can also be useful if you've learned how to do it, especially when your brain is fizzled or you're low on sleep, but you need to be able to avoid distractions after you finish, otherwise you use up all the regeneration you just built up.

This removes ALL motivation to even touch you phone. -when you feel bored at home w/o your electronics, try making schedules for the future or visit a friend's house. I made a schedule for the whole month that worked out really well -look around for toys, you may even find them fun and could pass HOURS in a day. I just wanna say, thank you for this video. The idea is simple enough that I want to try it. My problem is I'm addicted to mindless KZbin video binge, like right now I really need to get back to my internship work, but I'm here commenting. The problem with KZbin is, nowadays it's been made extremely difficult to log out. I can't find the "Sign Out" option on the Android app on my phone. just 9 months ago I was completely addicted to my phone and my parents decided to take it away, which lasted for 7 months. during that time I was the happiest I'd ever been, I became productive and pleasant, learnt new sports, etc. the moment they gave my phone back everything went back to how it used to be, it ruined my grades, sleep routine, my happiness, EVERYTHING. every time I spend over +3 hours (bearing in mind my average is over 6 hours, used to be 11 hours) I begin having constant breakdowns, completely hating myself and here I am, 4 in the morning on my phone. I just wish I could control this.

Hi hyn, your unfortunate situation is very insightful to me. How are you dealing with it right now? Have you dropped your phone again or you're still struggling? Thanks!

Another thing that I found helps is using a black and white filter since vivid colours play a big part in making us open the apps in the first place

I just saw a video of Struthless and he replaced social media with micro-journaling on his phone. I am trying this for me as well. I have already deleted Tik Tok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc. But I still keep KZbin. I will try this micro-journal as it is something that will replace the habit of social media. Good video Thomas!

It's been nearly 2 weeks I assume, how is deleting the socials + micro journaling working for you? would love to know! (i saw the same video btw, he's awesome!)
@ImprovementGang2 жыл бұрын
@@tee1209 At first it was pretty awesome. I was able to think a lot more about the things that I needed to do, and that made my day more productive. BUT, I still watch KZbin. It is a bit hard to totally replace content consumption with journaling. However, I also am trying podcast on Spotify to help me out. I think it is going to be a bit of a process to get there.

This worked with me and FB. I deleted Twitter ages ago and never went back. I stopped using Instagram for months only then to eventually go back to start posting for friends and family... now it has started to take over and it's time to log out on my phone and do what I did before. Use it exclusively on my PC. After that? KZbin...

Absolutely nuts how we’ve come to this point in only about 10 years.. I used to be in awe when seeing people with phone addiction. I hated when people used their phones while driving. And in the past few years I’ve fallen to trap myself. Thankfully I’m conscience to it. Deleted all my social media last night. Turned off all notifications minus calls & texts. Wish me luck! “It’s hard to break out of the matrix when you don’t even know you’re in the matrix.”

I've started making it a habit to log out of instagram once I reached my time limit and my brain got use to not just clicking on Instagram or any other app I was addicted to. You just have to make it a habit, so you dont have the urge to check the app you're addicted to on your smartphone. Time limits help as well even though it easy to just click 15 more minutes or turn off limit for the day, you just have to make it a routine and you'll start to be less on your phone. Resulting in positive habits and less phone addiction. Great video, keep up the amazing work your videos are always helpful.

To the *incredible person* seeing this, I wish you all the best in life❤ don't over blame yourself, accept things and go forward. Don't let others define what “success” is for you. Get up, learn the skills needed and get after it, all the keys to a happy life is in your hands. Keep pushing.

Also note that phone addiction is always sign of unconscious fear. Phone are designed to hook you is understandable but if it was uncontrollable everyone should have been addicted to it... Which isn't true.... So deal with fear first and letting go addiction is easy. The more fearful you are more phone you will use....

I've been trying to solve the problem at the root these days by targetting the internal urge to scroll through my phone. And my very simple trick for that is to stop taking my phone into the bathroom with me. It forces me to be with my own thoughts and, over time, I don't feel the urge to fill my "me-time" with scrolling anymore.

Phone--bathroom "breaks" can be the worst! Always telling myself "i'll only be a couple minutes" neverrr seems to work.
