Nice job, I remember building my mums only 30 year ago, I used paving slabs for the side work surface, trouble was my late father bought the wrong sand, it was not sharp sand and it was my first attempt at brick laying, so I didn't know about rubbing the joints afterwards, it did last for over 10 years thought. Lol.

Top and fun tip... I built the classic C shaped bbq.. for the grill I got a local engineering company to cut me some 5mm steel plate to fit and used some old road pins welded into a really sturdy and robust griddle to fit. I also drilled holes through 4 levels of mortar from side to side so I could adjust the griddle height from the plate and used 2 more road pins to support the griddle.. works a treat...

Quite a lot of people have asked the same but I don't think you have answered... I'm new to bricklaying but preparing to build a bbq (want it ready for my birthday in a month time, I should manage it!)... question is, how much mortar is needed? I guess I would need to mix it once for the whole project as I don't want to stop halfway to mix more? .. I will use the mix by hand on a piece of ply method. Will a bag of cement be enough? Too much? I'm thinking on a 1:5 ratio that would mean 5 bags of sand, and it feels like an awful lot of muck to me but maybe not... what do I know?! I've ordered the plasticiser, but will need to order the sand and cement, so if you could answer I would be VERY grateful. Thank you very much for your videos, watched & learned loads, (and your wedding in NY! Congratulations!)

Thanks but that wasn’t my question... the question was what is the total amount that will be needed for the whole bbq, would 3 bags of sand and one of cement be needed? Or 1.5 sand and half of cement? In the event, I just bodged it and put the bbq together without mortar, and used it several times last summer, with no problem at all!
