Very good, small EDC. Smart choices. I would recommend just one more item....iodine tablets, like potable aqua. If I have to walk any distance at all, safe water becomes paramount and without a vessel to boil it, I need some way to sanitize it. With your kit, I could filter it with the bandana into the small water bottle you provided, then pop in a potable aqua to sanitize it and in 30 minutes, I have safe water. Well thought-out EDC and affordable to nearly anyone.

I had to remind myself that my EDC was NOT a get home bag. I keep a get home bag in my vehicle in case something happens and I can't drive straight home. My EDC is for dealing with small emergencies & daily tasks while I'm away from my vehicle. I keep one at my desk at work and a smaller one that fits in my pocket for when I'm in the field. One of the things I added to my desk EDC was imodium or pepto tablets, as well as benadryl and advil. I found that contact cases work well for small pills. I just write on the lid what's in it.

Great job!!! You are so right about keeping in mind who you are building your emergency kit for. My niece has Down Syndrome and most of these items are inappropriate for her. She does have a flashlight, emergency blanket, snacks, entertainment/comfort items, etc. I carry extra stuff for her that she can't use on her own. In her emergency kit we added things like a toy swiss army knife, so she can feel apart of things. Around her neck she has a whistle and a small solar & hand crank flashlight. My parents are seniors so I want easy to use, quality, and lightweight gear for them, as well as my niece.

Great project! I would put a couple of very strong rubber or cable bands around it and then you can use a small bungee cord that you can attach to the bands to easily carry the case. I am not sure how comfortable that small case would be to carry for a longer walk but hanging it on you with the bungee would keep your hands free. The bands and cord would then be a bonus for making a tent out of the blanket. I appreciate your content!

Emergency blankets with a hood will keep you a lot warmer, especially in wind and rain. Wallet sized fresnel lenses take up no room, another fire starter. Hand sanitizer burns well, it is mostly alcohol, good fire starter. Small plastic bags can be water containers. Harbor Freight now carries a great multi-tool by Gordon, for $40, the best you can get for the money, like a $220 Leatherman, if you have room and the bucks. Tin cups are at Daisio, here on the left coast. And Welcome back!!!

A ball point pen that weighs .25 ounce. An OLFA 9mm knife that weighs .81 ounce. A small flashlight at .70 ounce. In short, a few lightweight things that work. I use these things several times a day! Excellent presentation. A few comments. __ Use a Sharpie to write "WW" on the Wizzy Wipes to distinguish them from candy. __ Put a zip tie around the lighter to keep it from accidentally pressed and release butane. Don't cut the extra end off too close (sometimes they slip with pressure). Instead, melt a short piece (using a soldering iron or clothes iron) to form a blob on the end. __ A headlight is helpful since it is hands free. The Dollar Tree sells one that is very bright but not adjustable (doesn't aim well when worn on a cap). Sometimes Lowes or Home Depot sell a three pack for around $10. __ Note: many paracord packages call it 550 but it is only rated for 150 lbs or less. __ Napkins are thicker and stronger than a bandana. Old pillow cases can be made into bandanas. The Dollar Tree bandanas are 100% polyester.

Cutting off the top where it just comes to full diameter and inverting with cap still on into the rest of the body of the bottle. For a water filter setup. I put it a dollar store paring knife and I saw where a prepper used a few sheets of hvy duty tin foil unfolded and then molded over his fist to make a usable cooking cup for that coffee or tea bag or soup packet. Also decided on a headlamp with three AAA batteries so it can be hung up on a limb, etc. Anyway, good for you and keep making them as your ministry ok? Great to tailor to the person using it! There are almost endless things that could be included. People confuse EDC kits and survival kits though. EDC is for what you might need on any given day. A survival kit is what you might need when the SHTF. Each will depend on your goals and abilities. But, for example, my EDC kit has a leather man micra. My survival gear has a minimum 4” fixed blade and a full-sized leatherman. My EDC has a bic lighter. My survival gear has a whole fire kit. I have things in my EDC that I would probably not need in a survival situation but they are things I regularly use or might want to use on a daily basis.

I like your selection of items for the box. These are quite similar to an edc tin I created myself. As an upgrade, I personally went for a $10 AAA flash light off Amazon, you can get some pretty good ones which on a low setting run for 72 hours I think. If you had an extra battery, that could double your illumination time. It’s not my favorite choice to use alkaline but in this small of a package, I think the alkalines win by just a bit. Only added concern is to keep the batteries in a sealed bag to protect the rest of your gear from potential issues with battery acid. I also usually place a Gerber dime multitool or victorinox tinker in these kits since they can be found for around $20 and are better quality tools. I have a number of dirt cheap multitools and I personally wouldn’t like trusting my life to them but I understand $20 can be quite a bit if your making like 5 of these kits. If someone is feeling particularly generous in putting together a kit, the next upgrade I would do is a dedicated knife. You can find quite affordable back lock knives which can serve well in this scenario. In the case of a knife, it may not necessarily be better to go much more expensive. The beauty of a cheap soft steel knife is it can basically be sharpened up on a rock or pavement once it gets dull. Even dull knives will cut a lot easier than no knife. ***A great stand in for a lock back knife would be a utility knife with a couple extra blades. You can find the cheap metal utility knives from Home Depot, Lowe’s, or harbor freight for like 5 bucks or less when on sale. It’s a lot tougher and more reliable than a multitool knife. Obviously if your making alot of these, I can understand wanting to forego the added costs I mentioned just because it seems like this is a kit for a day or two, not a week or a month.

Those are great ideas! Definitely needed in each of my family's vehicles. One concern I have is keeping bottled water, snack bars, etc. that are perishable and keeping them in a vehicle when the temperature can be over 100. I live in the south and the summers are brutal. Snack bars would likely melt, and water in plastic bottles would become undrinkable because of the hot plastic. For that reason, I haven't kept any liquids or perishable foods in the car. Jerky is a great idea though. Canned sardines would likely not work either so I feel stuck. What to do?

I’m looking at getting a waterproof adjustable boonie hat. I want it to be adjustable so I can make a removable fleece liner for when it’s cold. It provides protection from the sun and rain. A fresnel lens in your wallet takes absolutely no space and can be used to start a fire. Whirl-Pak makes plastic bags designed for testing water for laboratories. The plastic is highly durable and doesn’t leach many chemicals if any because it’s meant for sample purity. The seal is reusable but it is a plastic bag. It will fall apart eventually. But it’s the gold standard for compact water storage in an EDC. A bic lighter is so easy because they can be replaced at any convenience store. The minis are good for a kit like this. If you can afford the stainless container. That would be better naturally because it can function as eating/cooking/drinking vessel. I like SOS and other similar bars because they are designed to be stored in lifeboats and other areas with extreme temperature changes and still have a 5 year shelf life. And if we’re all honest with ourselves. When given the opportunity. Things will be neglected and that granola bar or whatever will go bad. The SOS bar has been specifically formulated for best shelf stability.

FYI, the Germ X contains ethyl alcohol. Yes the Ethanol is a great for firestarter, BUT . . . The flame is blue and hard to see in daylight. I only use in a situation, there are no other options because it is hard to see and the flame. Also the heat usually hotter than yellow flames sometimes. So a burn will happen quickly, if you don't know your on fire. ALSO, water is may not be the best way to put out this fire unless you are able to deprive it of oxygen. That the key depriveing the flame of oxygen, usually MSD sheets say use A,B,AB and ABC fire extinguisher, these are chemical fire extinguishers. So if this is the last option, I dug a hole to put the fire in so I could easly control everything. This made it easy to put out the flame and everything was controled for safety, don't want the fire to unexpectedly to spread. So, all these reasons, this is why I say as Firestarter and not a main source of fire.

Like white, green, yellow, red and those are good for signaling as well as the white one can give you some good light. And the green can mean it is safe, the yellow can mean a warning to be careful or something similar and red means danger or that you need help immediately. Just an example and it is a good kit you managed to create and mine would probably look totally different than yours.

A sheet of heavy duty aluminum foil can be folded small to fit in a compact kit, but in the field can be made into a cup for boiling water.
