1:53 this is the most satisfying moment in all of gate building for some reason. Followed by the moment the door is hung, swings and lines up perfectly. And that's followed by months years later when you close it after severe weather and it's still as solid as the day you built it or better. mmm

It’s actually a very well written and comprehensive book kzbin.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 . I wanted to pair this with an updated book on local codes to start planning a post-retirement dream shop. I think I have just about everything I need between the two. The extra plans available for purchase towards the end are priced almost as much as full home plans, not little sheds however.

In this case the top of the free side presses down through the diagonal to the supported side. But does it really matter? not like there's any great weight involved.
@Candisa4 жыл бұрын
It matters over time, supporting lasts a lot longer than hanging, don't underestimate gravity/weight over time.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but shouldn’t the bracing on the gate alternate so that it stops the gate from moving in both directions?
@predzrx76 жыл бұрын
I got taught to brace the way scott has built it so that the weight of the outside of the gate transfers back to the hinge, helps the gate not to sag and drop on non hinge side

Wondering why you chose to use screws to attach panels to the door frame, instead of the nail gun?

Screws grab better and when pre-drilled properly with the right size bit it will never split the wood.

Excellent work! Hey, out of curiosity, how do new zealand builders feel about Mitre 10?
@matthewcostello85776 жыл бұрын
Is there a specific reason why you attach the henge to it’s own post rather the post at the end of the fence line? I have this delimma now and am not sure the best way forward. I have a post set for the latch and was thinking I’d attach to the hinge at the end of my fence line.
@mcleaniechris5 жыл бұрын
Hey Matthew usually we hang gates and doors this way when there is a wall behind them. That way the gate only needs to open 90 degrees and will hit a door stop on the house side. Also opening this way means you get to look straight at the deck you walk into as you open it, rather than looking at a brick wall first as you open the door. Hope that helps.
@DiscoFang5 жыл бұрын
Always try to hinge from the strongest, most rigid side. Hinging from a free-standing post is a recipe to have that post bend over time. Gravity always wins with timber.
@312saxon5 жыл бұрын
Looks nice
@maxmackinlay6186 жыл бұрын
Does it matter if you hinge it from the opposite post?
@ScottBrownCarpentry6 жыл бұрын
max mackinlay either side is fine, I would change the angle of the diagonal braces though. I have the braces coming down to the hinges
@DiscoFang5 жыл бұрын
The only risk is the weight pulling the timber posts sideways over time. With timber, no matter the size of the post, it WILL happen. Securing to the house prevents that.
@Godlike-874 жыл бұрын

I would of used a galv steel post for timber slat fence and galv steel gate frame. I would also use screen up kits between posts and have a centre brace screwed from the back so its a seamless finish at the front, you wouldnt see any screw heads at all.
