How to build a Hydrofoil: Machine and Cutting Wing Outline's (Video 2/15)

This video: Covers Machining and cutting the outline of both the front and rear hydrofoil wings. We start by selecting the timber core for the hydrofoil wings and then using the plans templates to trace the shape of the wings and cut them to shape. We focus on good timber selection to make hydrofoil wing shaping much easier. Try and find a nice clear piece of wood that will make it easier to carve, cut and sand.
To shape the foil wings, step one is to bring the timber core to thickness.
Step 2 is to trade and cut out the wing shapes (or draw a new shape of your choice)
Step 3 is to cut, spokeshave and sand the final outline shape. We don't change this shape again, so getting this wing outline perfect is important in this step.

THE FLUKES HYDROFOIL V3 CONCEPT:
The Flukes DIY-3 Hydrofoil is designed based on proven hydrofoil principles that ensure it will fly while also focusing on simple manufacturing processes that make it accessible for a DIY home project. The plans outline the dimensions for building the Front and Rear Wings and the Fuselage, to then be connected to a production aluminium mast.
Foil design plays a critical role in the foil's lift, speed, stability and maneuverability. Understanding that no individual foil design can best perform in all flying conditions, and a home-made foil will never be as refined as a production foil, the intention with the Model DIY-3 was to build a "all rounder" foil with a solid Fuselage and strong connection points that people can use across various disciplines and skill levels. The plan dimensions can be scaled up or down to adjust the wing size that best suits the discipline and rider should they choose to do so. Disciplines include; Kitesurfing, Winging, Surfing, Towing, SUP and Sail.
This Medium aspect foil is suitable for beginners through advanced riders. While different aspect ratios have recognizable benefits, the medium aspect is a good DIY starter wing. This foil Lifts smoothly, handles speed well and feels stable underfoot. It is a fun design to make and use.

Dude. You’re the man. This is exactly what I was looking for when I decided it was time to try the build myself. I’m a machinist and fabricator by trade so this should be a breeze. I’m super pumped to get going. Thanks for the FREE plans. I’ll def hit you up if there’s anything I did differently and let you know how it turned out. I will for sure be back to buy the mast, hollowed out aluminum is out of my skill set range. This is Jordan. This is the easiest step of all. I ended up using a scroll saw because I don't have a vertical band saw. I have a thickness planer so that was easy, and the belt sander clamped on it's side is genius. I ended up having Office Depot print out the plans on 11x17 paper, because our printer can only do letter sized paper. Cost me $6.00 here in the states to print them out. I already had pretty clear cedar on hand.

Hi, it's me again, have you ever tried Baltic Birch Plywood. It's really tough and has really thin Laminations.

Hey Merle, yes you can use ply. The only thing is that half of the ply has the grain running from the lading edge to the trailing edge, where as to help reduce flex it's nice to have all grain from wingtip to wingtip. That said, using a high quality hardwood ply like birch will be fine by adding 1 more layer of 6oz cloth to help stiffen the wing. Also, there is a benefit of using ply.. as your shaping the wings you an keep track of shaping it even either side by looking at the pattern the layers make :)

yeah you can. You can laminate your own too if you want to do a curve. Thats what i did in an earlier wing :)
