A simple magazine rack made with, gulp!, pocket screws!
For the last few years, Popular Woodworking has been publishing numerous projects within their I Can Do That series. The idea is to provide straightforward project plans that just about anybody can do with a basic set of tools. Back in 2009, with Popular Woodworking's permission, I decided to build a few of these projects for our Guild members. So this video shows you how to build the Wall-Hanging Magazine Rack, designed by Glen Huey. And because I don't like to leave well enough alone, I'll also show you an alternative version of the magazine rack that employs a few of my personal design changes.
Please note that this video was originally filmed in 2009. I was working out of a very crowded garage at the time in hopes of proceeding with my Dream Shop build. That was just days before the sale of our old house fell through and everything went to crap. So don't be confused by the appearance of an old shop space. The Dream Shop wasn't really a dream and it does exist. Ha!

Thanks Marc. I don't have the designers eye so I appreciate your second version showing how some subtle curves really change the look of a project.

Ahhh. Pocket screws! One of my guilty pleasures;) I found when driving into hardwoods, it really helps to zip it in about halfway, back it out a bit, then drive it home. Much less chance of splitting. thanks for the video- and festool inspiration.

I really like the design of your rendition - nicely done! Thanks for the walk-through on the build, including the crack and fix. Fixing the unexpected problems tend to be the most helpful tidbits for me. Thanks!

I'm not a good woodworker and I have very limited tools. But I enjoy watching your vids because it inspires me to work hard and build a shop like yours. Ive been looking at you tube for different techniques, and you have the best . Thanks you for doing these KZbin vids. Have a blessed day. You and your wife should make more shows together.

I just bought the Kreg jig last month and built a bookshelf system with it. I have been wanting to do a magazine rack for the exact same reasons you show in your intro. Maybe next you could do a corner towel shelf system or open faced towel cabinet. Nice videos and I'll be reviewing your videos for setting up squareness when I get my new Ridgid R4512 for Christmas. Thank you and cheers.

I think the 2nd one looks best. I would use hardwood dowels instead of metal, and use walnut or red oak for the wood. Thanks for the video it make you use your mind to come up with something different.

I am honestly not sure if you would get a pilot hole using the system as is. You might get enough of a starting hole in the second piece to use that as reference and then use a smaller bit to create the pilot hole. Would take a little adjusting and experimentation.

It won't really accept any stain at all. So what you see is pretty much what you get. So its a good idea to get the color of the epoxy right using dye ahead of time. A gel stain might give it a little color but not a whole lot.

i have a question as i am thinking of getting a kregg jig instead of using dowels on certain projects. can you pre-drill a pilot hole for the screw. i mainly use rimu and when dry you wont get a screw in it without pre-drilling. i thought when i first saw the system that the drill bit also did a pilot hole, but then i may be wrong. cheers tayler

Just a tought, wouldent it be better to place the pocketholes that are on the "main" shelve bottom on the other side, so it comes on the inside, where it would be completely invicinbe??? Now you can see them if you look at it from the underside. Sorry if my english is bad, I am Norwegian ;)

Hey Marc...is there anything I can mix with epoxy in order to make it a little more "runny" but still provide strength? I'm trying to find a fix for hairline cracks and knots in my boards and would like something that isn't so thick so it can seep in through the cracks better. Thanks.

You could have also put the glue on the screw to help hold it since the hole is a little wider. Also I wish Kreg would make 6 lobe screw heads. You can't beat star bits that's all I use now.

Not that I know of. But you can buy less viscous epoxy. Try West Systems. The stuff is nice and runny. :)

To be honest, that was so long ago I don't remember. Given the heat in the garage at the time, I don't doubt the fact that I may have misspoke, lol. Because I'm thinking stainless would be expensive and pretty hard to come by.

I use Kreg jig also but I've changed the bit to torx T20 and T25 size. Down size is that I have only one thread type in use but I save money by using commercially available flat head screws. Sorry Kreg!
