One, suggestion. place that compressor around the corner of building to block noise or build a collapsible box and place compressor in it to shield noise while filming video

Great job Derek. I watched a large fence company do a neighbors gate, and they did it the you’ve shown here. This is for certain the best way to do the gate. Thanks for the video. I’m doing mine this weekend. 🙂

Your diagonals are the wrong way. The idea is to go from the bottom hinge to the top opposite corner of the door so that all the weight pulling down from the door will be translated back to the hinge. Also you need to build a frame so the diagonals have a vertical piece to attach to not the horizontal ones. ( the same piece the hinges should attach to)
@mikefoster4988
@mikefoster4988 3 жыл бұрын
Nervjiggy is right -the weight on every gate, no matter who, what, when or where is always transferred to the hinge side of the gate and never transferred to the latch side. Simply put, you can follow the diagonal line(s) of the brace(s) you've installed in this vid and be certain that the weight of your gate will be transferred to the latch side. No bueno. Trust us, no matter what gibberish you're being told, there is not "another way" to align with the laws of physics. These are details that are lost in the trades these days and if you'll pick this tip up from us, it'll simply provide more value to you and your clients -your 2 year no sag warranty will be rock solid, hell make it 5 years if you orient your braces correctly. You're a top notch fellow with a "level" head on your shoulders -keep up the good work!

You are correct. Angles are facing the wrong directions. Angles go up from hinges to high point in gate opening never going over 45 degrees. Puts weight on hinges and not on gate latch.

Have you ever revisited one of your projects a year or two after building it? I'm just curious as to how well the gate would hold up with how you reinforced it. With our climate and humidity, a gate without a full frame would sag and warp

Hey Derek, great video describing the gate install. Im installing a fence like this and also a gate in this manner. I have a question, about that second post next to the gate post. I know its for support right. How far from the gate post would you put that. looks like its about 2 feet apart.
@derekhelms825
@derekhelms825 3 жыл бұрын
Make sure your 3 post are within 8 feet of each other so you can use a 2x4x8 if you want a wider gate use a 10 footer as yes it is so your hinges have more then one post for support . I always recommend starting on your gate section then the left or Right side rather then gong left to right

Will this pattern work for an 8 foot high fence using six 6-inch pickets for a 36-inch gate?
@derekhelms825
@derekhelms825 3 жыл бұрын
Yes. But typically you would cut the gate out at about 6 ft minimum on a foot fence . You don’t want to have a full 8 ft gate swinging open bc the amount of weight.on it will definitely cause the gate to sag in the future

I get why you would want two posts on the hinge side of the gate but would you put two on the opposite side, its not carrying any weight? Just for a heck of it?
@patrickdenny16
@patrickdenny16 3 жыл бұрын
Every time the gate closes there is lateral force applied to the post on the latch side. By adding an additional post you are able to spread the impact among two post. This helps insure you have a gate post that wont weaken its connection with the ground/concrete over time.

Dude. You built your cross members backwards. They slope down from the hinge when they should slop up from the hinge since the wood works better under compression. Also, you said yourself that the pickets will shrink so the lag screws that you put in to secure the hinges are going to split the wood as it dries. How have you been doing fence for ten years yet be making these rookie mistakes? A two year warranty? Hahah bet you get a lot of calls on those gates in the future

This is 100% the wrong way. I have to teach people who learn this way. Not bracing, no good crossbeams, no actual support on the brackets. In fact, this is a quick way to end the job, collect a paycheck and move on. I fix this crap all the time. 2 year warranty? No good friend. I can put a 15 year warranty on my gates. They’re built like tanks because they’re built right.
